[ She spots the threatening altercation, or whatever it even is, from across the street. For a little bit she hesitates, because it really isn't any of her business and she's wearing the sort of clothes that have a lot more to do with dying of heat than being able to handle trouble, but then she crosses the street anyways, takes his arm as if he's escorting her. ]

Pardon us, but he really needs to be lying down out of the heat. [ And hopefully that will be all, because she's in a bad mood and she wants to hit someone and it really wouldn't be a good idea. ]

[ No please, Tony has negative ranks in diplomacy, okay, somehow half the time his +4 CHA modifier just up and vanishes and then he's basically left kicking the other guy in the teeth because he's so bad at it that proverbially putting his foot in his own mouth is still too much to ask.

That doesn't mean her arm doesn't pretty easily surprise him, but that it, itself, the kind of thing he is good at masking. ] If you'll excuse us, this is my - [ ... were women doctors in this point in time? His only frame of reference is Doctor Quinn, and given the Native American epithet at the end of her name, he's not sure about the authenticity there. ] - health specialist from back East. Like, far East. Maybe you should lay down too - you're looking a little hot headed. [ Oooh, bad, no Tony. ] Sun talking! I do apologize. If you will, now, we'll be on our totally opposite way, thanks. [ Hey let's just sort of start walking and see what happens. ]

[ That is a deeply negative ranking in diplomacy, seriously. Max generally doesn't consider herself too much of a diplomat either, but she does have her empathy and the understanding of people that's come from long years of knowing how they feel and being able to correlate it to how they act. Her ranking is probably a lot higher than his from that, even if she tends to just not care enough to put it to use around here.

Her grip tightens a little bit in warning at the hot headed comment and she shoots him a thinlipped look of irritation, then glosses over it with something neutral and polite as she looks back to the men. ] He doesn't mean any harm. Excuse us. [ The leader of the little group doesn't want to let it go. She can feel his irritation and desire to prove himself, and she's already sliding into his mind like a snake when he demands they turn around. ]

We really have to go. [ She needs to buy just a little bit of time to make him stop caring - altering slightly isn't that difficult, but removing the urge entirely will take effort she doesn't normally put in. ]

[ What. ~~Oooh, bossy. He likes bossy.~~ Well you just basically told him to shut up, twice, and now there's something... weird going on, he guesses, because that guy definitely looks conflicted when Tony pauses and glances over his shoulder. ] You really want to get into this right now, with such a nice young, educated lady present?

[ And she expects you to listen to her, despite like - all evidence pointing directly to the contrary as to the likelihood of it. She just does. ] I'm not that young. [ Quietly, a little absently, and a moment later the man's face goes blank for a moment and then he frowns at them and turns around back to his group. She hadn't been particularly gentle about it, but she'd been rushed. It wouldn't harm him. ] How much water have you been drinking? [ Quietly to Tony as she starts walking away with him. ]

[ Well, he will, just because he wants to watch this play out now because he knew it was weird before but okay yeah see that, that was weird. He glances back down at her as they start walking away, mind spinning to work this out. ] More than he has, apparently. What the hell just happened? I was the catalyst and I still can't tell what end reaction I provoked.

[ She doesn't look back at him, straight ahead and her face as neutral as she can get it. Stop looking at her, stop questioning it, please just let her get away with it. She wouldn't normally be this open when using her empathy in public, and she's still not entirely sure why she was willing to take the risk now, and she would really appreciate it if he stopped looking at her now. ] He lost interest. There's plenty of other things going on in this town. [ A little curt. ]

[ Curt, huh. He doesn't normally drop things, and this isn't dropped, but he's pretty sure she's not going to talk about it here, for whatever reason.

That doesn't stop him trying, obviously, just that he doubts she'll actually say anything. No, if that, she'll wait until they get back to Exsilium, where all the war and spying is happening. Then it'll be safe. ] Uh huh. There's so many other things going on in this town with with the extra couple hundred people all of a sudden.

[ If she gets her way, she will never talk about it. Not that she's likely to get her way about that, or not entirely, but she's not going to be happy about it.

That is a really awful definition of safe, and yet it's true. Exsilium is a more known quantity, and therefore it's safer than here. ] Plenty for them to care about more than us. You should drink something. The heat sucks.

He's also not even bothering to pretend to be convinced, just so she can be sure to expect him asking her shit about it later, but for right now, whatever. ] Is that where we're going? To get a drink? I've been drinking, just so you know. The barkeep already calls me a 'regular', as of yesterday.

Yeah, she can tell that he's not actually convinced so much as temporarily dropping it, and that's a little bit frustrating, but it'll work for now and give her time to figure out a more convincing explanation. ] Not alcohol, it dehydrates you. No wonder the sun's been hitting you hard, you need just plain water.

[ She'll just get a handy little text or something later when they get back to Exsilium. ]

What? No, I want alcohol. I don't want water. I'm pretty sure I don't want water. Like, damn sure.

[ except for how she won't because tiny tiny Tony. ]

I don't actually care what you want, I care what's going to keep you from getting more dehydrated and therefore less functioning.

[ yeah, well. DON'T THINK THAT GETS HER OUT OF IT.

He shuts up for a second, looking at her but still letting her walk with him to wherever it was she had in mind. Then: ] You're not my real mom.

[ things she will be 100% displeased about.

She rolls her eyes and looks up at him. ] I mentioned the 'not caring' part, right? [ Which is - well, it's total bullshit. If she didn't care, she wouldn't have crossed the street, she definitely wouldn't have risked using empathy, and she wouldn't be dragging him to the hotel she's in so that she could hydrate him and send him on his way. ] I'm not your real mom or your pretend mom.

[ Yeah, mentioned, but ] And yet. You're doing a good job anyway, despite that.

[ Calling her on that is just rude, okay. She rolls her eyes. ] No, I'm not. I'm going to force you to drink water and then you can go on your merry way.

Still counts. [ Shrug. It's more than he's gotten the rest of the time he was here. Well, no, second most. Someone threw him in a cave for his own good and made him stay there. He was v angry. ] So what have you been doing?

No it doesn't. [ It definitely doesn't. And yeah, someone. It was for his own good. ] Here? Soaking up the sun. Avoiding people. Drinking enough water. [ Hey look her hotel. She pushes the door open and holds it long enough for him to grab it after her. ]

Boring. Still. Hasn't anybody found something fun to do here yet? [ Oh, hotel. Okay. ] Speaking of something fun to do. Are we going to your room? [ Yes there was ~suggestion on the 'your'. ]

What, you don't ride horses? [ A little sarcastically, because god knows she doesn't know how to. She flicks her eyes to him, shrugs a little. The innuendo wasn't missed, but she figures ignoring it is the best way to - she's not entirely sure what end goal she's going for, but probably the one where she doesn't have to consider any of the considerations that come up with innuendo. ] Unless you happen to have water wherever you're staying. Worried for my reputation?

I'm more into the 'save a horse' mentality than anything else. [ And hey, if she wants to ignore it - he shrugs. ] I doubt we'll be here long enough for your reputation to come into too much disrepair.

Wouldn't you then have to become a cowboy to get anything out of that? [ yeah let's be honest here max is her own most effective personal cockblock a lot of the time. she's got issues. ] Got somewhere to be?

I have a hat. [ That's about all the cowboy anyone's likely to get out of him, anyway. ] I meant we're only supposed to be here for like, a week, apparently, but if you're that worried about having a strange man in your room...

It's a great hat, but that doesn't make you a cowboy. [ And a little roll of her eyes, but she's sort of smiling at the edges of her mouth. ] It was a joke. Sometimes I make jokes.
