He sniffs the ground carefully, head lifting to look up at the sky, try to find stars he can recognize. No such thing; be it the passage of time or the geography has changed their place or simply made constellations unrecognizable. There wasn't much point in using them to guide him anyway - the way to the Outlands and back shouldn't be too hard when he's got several senses to lead the way.
So he makes use of them, padding and occasionally running, always careful not to stir too much attention, good or bad. Wouldn't want anyone using his or her weapon against him just because he gave them an accidental fright, would we...

"Out for a stroll?" He asked. Funnily enough, if the wolf spoke back, he'd be able to understand the large canine.

Being out for a stroll could be a way to describe it, but his intention was to hunt as well. Not for humans - smaller things. Easier to catch, simpler to eat.

Crouching down, there wasn't a single ounce of fear shown in Sohki as he smiled cheerfully at the large wolf. 'Perhaps this is far easier a method to communicate?' He asked as he reached out with his mind to speak with the creature.

You can understand me?
no subject
I can do far more than understand you, my boy, Sohki cheerfully said in return. Can you only communicate through your mind, or can you speak?
no subject
I can't speak.
Never mind adding that he could only speak as a human. That should remain a secret, for now.

To the Outlands. I didn't mean to follow you.

Are you sure?

I am always certain my dear boy, he said. Unless you don't think that you could keep up with me.
no subject
I am out to hunt.
He might as well be honest about it. Was his company still sought for it?

Oh - I didn't realize - That he was a... unicorn? Shape-shifter sounded better. He had to slow down, tail swinging behind him, eyes locked on the new shape. You're a shape-shifter as well-!

Flicking his tail, Sohki wasn't shy about what he truly was, and reared back on his hind legs as he stretched before landing back on all fours. Of sorts, he said with an amused chuckle accompanied his words. I always am what I am, but I can take human appearance.
It wasn't quite as simple as that, but the kirin didn't feel the need to explain further. The only reason the people here saw him as human was because it was how he willed it. He never once actually changed from his original form, but instead projected a powerful illusion with his human form.

Would others take his secret as well as he could take someone else's?
Are there others like you?

He chuckled to himself as if sharing a joke before shaking his head. As for here, I have seen a few others with such skills.
no subject
Who are they?
Was it wrong to be curious?
