[The hard part about being the main cook in his apartment is deciding what to make every day, and for lack of ideas Emil's lingering around the marketplace trying to come up with new ideas for what to make. He doesn't want to bother the vendors by hovering too long and taking up space other customers could use, so instead he walks around first thinking to himself.]

The onions look good today...maybe the carrots. I could make stew, or maybe curry? I wonder which they would like better...

[Shintaro's hardly a cook and has a friend who provides meals for him and his sister more often than not, but it's still a smart idea to make sure you're not living with empty cabinets. He's gotten some fruits and bread for toast in his bag already, but he takes a detour at the vegetables because the idea of salad appealed to him.

He overhears Emil muttering to himself, and after a moment of listening, speaks up]

Curry.

Curry--

[Wait, wasn't that someone else's voice? Emil turns around and sees Shintaro there.]

You were listening to that?

Yeah. I was standing right here so I heard you.

[He suddenly looks apologetic oh no was that a bad thing--]

S-sorry, I wasn't trying to eavesdrop.

No, it's fine!

[Emil shakes his head quickly. No need to feel bad because of him!]

I've been trying to decide anyway, so thank you.

Huh? [Wait you took him seriously!?]

A-aah, but, shouldn't you choose something your friends would like? You sounded like you were cooking for someone else so--

It's just my roommates. I'm not sure which they would like better, so curry is as good as anything.

Oh... Well, curry's a good menu if you're eating with a lot of people, right? Do you have rice or...?

[He's actually wondering where Emil even learned about curry. Did wherever Emil come from have curry? Was it even the same curry he was thinking of?]

I do. There's enough to last us for a little while.

[He nods. Curry rice is apparently good in any world. It makes him pleased to know about that consistency.]

If you've got rice, definitely curry.

Curry it is, then. Do you want to come have some tonight? There should be enough for four.

I appreciate it, but I think I'll have to pass, sorry.

[He looks sincerely apologetic as he hastens to explain.]

I live with my sister and this other girl, so they'd get mad if I, well, left them to make their own food while getting invited somewhere else...

[Really? Well, Emil's the only one in his room who has more than rudimentary cooking skills so he can sort of understand that.]

Well, all three of you can come sometime then if you'd like. Just give me some warning first.

Ene? Is that your sister's friend?

Er, I guess so? I mean, I met her first, but I think she gets along better with Momo now that they actually talk.

Oh. I thought that she would be...anyway, never mind. I think I'd be all right if I met her.

Well, if you want I could introduce you sometime. But I'll warn you that if Ene considers you her friend, she'll email herself to you.

Aah... like the text messages? She can send herself to your tablet with that.

You can send yourself in that?

She can, it's a long story. It's her weapon, but it's kinda normal for her?

[Emil tries to imagine how that could be possible.]

That's a strange kind of magic.

Believe me, if I could figure out how it worked I think my life might be a lot easier. But she makes it easy to keep track of everyone if we're separated.

That does sound pretty useful, like during the bombings before. If I'd known a way to keep track of people, then it would have been easier to make sure they were safe.

... Well, so far it looks like she can only do it as long as someone answers the text she sends first, so it's got limited use.

That does make it harder. It still sounds like it could be handy, though.

[he sighs. he hates admitting to it but] I won't deny that it is. Since she can send herself directly to the tablet she wants to, we don't have to look for anyone as long as they have theirs.

[Huh. What's with the sigh?]

Is something wrong with that?

Not with that itself. It's just... Ene's [evil] kind of difficult sometimes.

Oh. I'm sorry, I didn't realize.

[This is probably a good time to start changing the topic.]

Then if you want, just you and your sister could come over sometime if you'd like.

[Oh no now Ene's going to kill him if she ever finds out but Shintaro just... decides it's best not to complicate things anymore.]

O-oh, right! Yeah. Thanks, Emil... I appreciate that.

[Did he say something wrong? Or did he not? It's hard to tell.]

Right. Anyway, um...thanks for the help earlier.

It wasn't a problem. I mean... all I did was eavesdrop.

It still saved me some trouble, though. I should probably get back to shopping soon, come to think of it...

[That reminds him of his own groceries and he nods, readjusting his hold on the things he's been carrying.]

Right. I shouldn't keep you, should I? I hope your roommates like the curry.

... Yeah. I don't mind that. Maybe at the library again?

The library works for me. Is tomorrow all right?

[Shintaro grins a little and raises his hand in a wave before he turns to go.]
