Nick's been watching the fight with great amusement--and from a safe distance on the other side of the bar. He's not the type to jump into the fray, but he does enjoy a good barfight.

He'd initally come down to the bar to see if he could rouse up a good poker game, or maybe even shoot some pool; wagering with some cold, hard cash. He'd made a tidy profit before sitting down to enjoy a couple of beers, watching as the kid got drunker and drunker. Picking on the local townies was inevitable, and Nick keeps an eye on it, not just for amusement, but to also make sure that it doesn't get too out of control; he'll jump in if he absolutely has to.
