She’s one of the first people he’s actually spotting in the residential halls, partly because he’s been leaping at shadows and partly because he set out so early that people were still in their beds or elsewhere. He’s ducked around the corner, now, back to the wall, and he’s not so good at masking his presence that she can’t notice him. He’d planned to make his way down this hall to the other side of the Hold, or wherever it would lead, and so he balks when he spots her, waiting for her to leave.
