Cedric inhaled the scent of the brewing tea, breathing out with a serene smile. That smelled wonderful. He glanced at the kirin beside him, an embarrassed flush starting at his neck.
"Transfiguration was always my favourite subject. I really enjoy this kind of magic---making something special, you know? Mum always liked the floral arrangements on her birthday."
His expression darkened. "But there are much more powerful wizards out there. The spells that protect the school from prying eyes and invasions are a thousand years old, for example. And like I said, Animagi must have great control over their magic to change forms. And then there are the Dark Arts---they're meant to cause pain to other people, but the worst of them are spells that torture, mind-control, and even kill people in just an instant. You have to have a great amount of focus to use those."
He'd been on the receiving end of all three Unforgivable Curses---their devastating effects were a fitting indicator of the amount of pure dedication to causing pain a wizard needed to feel to use them, he thought.
"We learn to defend ourselves from other wizards' spells as best we can. But...I think if I'm going to get stronger, I need to focus on using what I have creatively. Usually that turns into me making a singing watch or something of that sort, but I'd like to do something more useful here. I'll think of something."
