Kanaya has, of course, no idea that her ambulatory companion is so suspicious of her. She might have this paranoia herself about an older human who wasn't a Transport (though she'd be worried as much about robbery as rape, herself); but she's myopic, knowing she's a benevolent troll. As they walk, she points out shops that they pass by; the nature of these nondescript buildings is difficult for a newcomer to determine (something she probably admits at one point to having had trouble with herself).
The blocks it takes to reach the apartment complex are actually less daunting than the stairs will be. When they get inside, Kanaya thinks, she should warn Haruka about the stairs.
