this thread now looks stupid because i finally got around to keywording the rest of my icons >(

The idea of being anyone's entertainment would rankle her if she knew, but Homura for the moment remains unaware that Shepard's inquiries are anything other than a particularly intrusive, brand of curiosity.

The question is an intensely personal one, and Homura gives Shepard a flat look. She had thought it hadn't worked at all, had failed time and time again until, by Madoka's account, she had nearly given in to her despair. But then... Madoka had also told her that she had succeeded at last, albeit not in the way she had intended to. Madoka had made a wish, but it had been with full knowledge of what she was doing, of what she was sacrificing. She had made a wish and given herself up for the sake of those she loved, for the sake of hundreds of girls she had never met. But she had not been tricked into it, and that was the promise Homura had made: to save her before Kyuubey tricked her into a wish.

And that, Homura had finally done. Madoka's breathtakingly selfless wish could not have been made under false pretenses, with manipulation and trickery to blame. Homura had kept her alive long enough that she could make a wish that would rewrite the world.

She has not come to terms with it quite yet; it was a hard truth to accept, that she had fulfilled her promise and had lost Madoka still, but when she finally replies to Shepard, "It has been a success," she does not lie.
