I'm Kaede Kaburagi, one of the newer members of the Mekakushi-Dan! I was also the one who sent the packaged hotpot over after last month's mission with that guy's world being destroyed.

That was very kind of you.

[Jade assumes. The intention seems kind, anyway. Whether or not it was of any comfort to Keith is something that Jade, with his teaspoon range of emotions, can't quite say with certainty.]

Keith is out at present, but he'll likely be back shortly.

I wasn't looking for him in particular? I just wanted to stop by and drop these off for the apartment. [ She wonders why he would assume she's looking for Keith. Hm, that's something to ask Kido about later...

She puts the brown bag down on the kitchen counter and starts unpacking the contents: several containers of soup and a huge ziplock back of muffins! ] I saw your text about the medicine, which I thought was great of you to do, so I wanted to repay you back with some food! You can't do science unless you have fuel for all those numbers and such, right?

[Jade kind of blinks at it a moment.

[ Free food just happened! She folds up the bag and leans against the counter as her eyes land on the various bottles in front of him. ]

Is this what you normally do back home? If you don't mind me asking...

[clinical]

It's no problem. I'm a soldier, in fact. Medicine is merely something of a hobby.

[He finishes writing down the instructions for this one—it's for Asch, so the instructions are really to keep Luke from getting out of hand—and presses it to the bottle.]

Well, it's a hobby that definitely helps around here, even if they're pretty advanced. How long have you been in Exsilium?

[clinical]

[She's a sweet eleven year old girl who brought him baked goods. Jade's sarcasm would be uncalled for with her. But he isn't very good at talking to small children. He wasn't able to do it properly even when he was one.

So forgive him his failures here.]

A little over two months, I believe. [He has to recalculate for Earth's calendars.] You said you'd joined the Mekakushi Dan? Was that a recent development?

Oh, so not too long. [ a nod! ] I joined them about two weeks after I arrived, if I remember correctly, and that was in April.

[clinical]

I see. [That child has been through some difficult times. It's normal, though. Not to have a friend brought back, but of course, war and accident don't concern themselves with the ages of those who suffer.

He indicates the muffins.] Do we have you to thank that they all remember to eat?

[ No lies are detected in that statement. Kaede has witnessed several times now within these two months that the Initiative doesn't care, and the United Earth doesn't care. Someone has to win this overall war, casualites be damned.

She looks at the muffins before looking back at him, smiling with a shrug. ] I guess so! Since I'm rather young and inexperienced with actual fighting and stuff, I figured helping out with the food would be better than sitting around worrying.

[clinical]

[He smiles just a tiny bit.] How very industrious. I admit, I'm surprised at this level of cooking at your age.

[Especially because he knows most humans here have really short years. What can a person do in 11 x 365 days? It's madness.]

[ She smiles shyly, a pink tint coming to her cheeks out of embarrassment. ] It's nothing spectacular, but thank you. I simply helped my grandmother back home with preparing food, and directions are great, too!

[ Go to school for about 280 days out of the year, every year. Then you add in extracurricular activities, family events, sleeping, etc., and there's maybe an hour or two left for actual "me" time. ]

Were you able to try the food I sent over last time?

[clinical]

[Earth time is weird. You need 765 day long years, guys.

Jade answers,] I'm afraid not. I didn't think it appropriate.

[He's military. You don't eat other people's carepackages from home.]

[ That would be great. Really, really, really long, but great.

Jade's answer makes her puff her cheeks out. She sent enough for them all, and the note said it was for all of them, what the heck? ] I made sure to send enough for everyone, but maybe not note wasn't specific enough. Well, at least there's the soup this time, and next time I do hotpot, I'll make sure you get some!

[Oh, the child made a puffy-face. It's hard not to smile a little.]

My apologies if I've offended. At military school, a student who ate from another's care package would be taken out back and beaten for penance. Next time, I promise not to allow my school-day hangups to get in the way of your generosity.

Oh? Should I refer to you by your military title...?

[He dismisses the concern with something of a smile.] Not at all. I'm not a colonel here. Just 'Jade' is fine.

Though in fairness, I should ask if there is a particular way I should address you. I'm not very familiar with formality rules outside of Auldrant's.

Then 'Jade' it will be, and 'Kaede' is just fine for me. My dad always finds ways to make it sound weird, somehow, like extending the 'a'.

That must be an affectionate game between father and daughter. I hope you find strange ways to call his name as well.

I do! I have to get creative [ with his Hero name ] but it works in the end. And I bet he's helping keep the city safe right now, too, back home.

Is your father in law enforcement?

[The military also is involved in investigative work and law enforcement in Malkuth. It's a natural jump.]

...sort of? He's not a police officer or anything, but what we call back home a Hero. He has NEXT powers that help him catch bad guys — 'NEXT' meaning 'Noted Entities with eXtraordinary Talents.'

Is such a power natural to him?

Yes. I also happen to be a NEXT, and my powers allow me to copy another person's power by physical contact.
