The statement “Let’s go to Vegas” exists as the multiverse’s quintessential definition of, “well it seemed like a good idea at the time.” Even in this case, it really had, between zombies, insurrection, and the day to day tedium of life on the moon. Besides which, Xerxes Break has a new sentient (sentient-er) weapon, which in a stunning show of good judgement is too dangerous to test on the moonbase, nor in any concentration of people. Las Vegas, set against the backdrop of the vast, desolate Mojave desert, seemed to be a perfect choice.

When our heroes wink into existence, squinting against the early-morning desert sunshine, they’ll find themselves duly welcomed. Come play in the casino. When you feel a bit peckish, indulge in all you can eat. Take your winnings and go shopping; at night, take in a show. And if you’ve done really well gambling, unwind in a ridiculously luxurious suite.

( not so different but quite different to even have the luxury of fresh air blown in behind them, still lingering in their lungs. he follows her dutifully, looking around the shop curiously. )

She might not have lost the key, and even if she did she can sleep in someone else's room too.

( he pulls out his wallet and from that extricates a...not inconsiderable number of us dollars, many of which may or may not have been liberated from rosette. )

[ it's too late.

the buffet manager comes rushing out, slamming the restaurant door open while pointing accusingly at alice. he seems really upset about something.

then he shouts: 'I thought I told you and that boy never to come again!' ]

Argh.

[ Gilbert might have the advantage of size, but Hatter is wiry and powerful; moreover, he has no compunction about pushing Break's body past its limit. There's a moment when his hands are clutching Gilbert's neck. ]

I'm possessed, you're possessed, we're all possessed heeeeere~!

[ Fifteen years of destroying one's own kind ought to be enough to drive anybody mad. Or perhaps it was the fifteen years of knowing he was killing his own contractor, bit by bit. Or perhaps he was mad all along, it's hard to say. Kevin's spear had pierced him through that morning, and it made him calmer, but the feeling didn't last.

Right now, his only thought is to KILL EVERYTHING. An aura of complete rejection, of nothing springs up around him —

Which is when Rosette hits the gas and slams him into the seat back, breaking his grip and his concentration. ]

[ and of course it's because SOMEONE wouldn't walk away fast enough. ]

I'M ALREADY LEAVING, YOU STUPID STINGY PIG! [ ahem, if you squint he kinda does look like a pig. he's not exactly stingy though... stomachs with a bottomless pit just cannot be fed.

but deciding that simply shouting isn't enough, alice plucks the plush doll from gilbert's hands and throws it straight at manager's face with all her might. ]

[Possession, no, but he's pretty sure that this isn't the same thing that Rosette thinks it is. That feeling of summoning negation only cements his theory; Raven can sense it as a threat, and his left hand aches as a result.

He grunts and twists his head away as Hatter reaches out to grab hold of his neck, but Rosette's quick getaway isn't making it easy to fight him off. There's no way he's willing to hurt Break in the process of fighting his Chain, so there's really only one other option before physical damage becomes a last resort.

But the girl's bad driving is a blessing in disguise, it seems. As soon as Break is back against the seat and he's free to move as he pleases, Gil first grabs hold of the side of the car to prop himself up (fights from turning around to yell at Rosette for reckless driving again) and then reaches out to slap his left hand to Break's head, summoning Raven to seal the out of control Chain. A few large black feathers appear our of thin air in the backseat, scattered around the inside of the car by a very controlled, shounen wind.]

That doesn't make any sense at all!

[Oh but Gilbert can put two and two together pretty damned fast as she starts running. He should have known better than to think that after gaining a bit of money on her own that she wouldn't have caused a lot of trouble along with it. This is what he gets for being optimistic.

He turns quickly on his heels and runs, easily catching up to her as they dodge gamblers and drunks.]

What did you do?! Eat all of his food?!

[ SHE'LL GET HIM A NEW ONE.

right now they have an angry pig to run from, complete with a full obstacle course that is the people of vegas. ]

Shut up! It's 'all you can eat' isn't it?! If they didn't want you to eat everything, they shouldn't have put that sign up!

[anklets]

[She brightens the moment the scent and gleam of polished leather surround them. Isn't that funny?]

Oh- yes. [ surprisingly girlish, beneath all that war-grime ] I'm afraid I've never had much opportunity to go shoe-shopping before, so I thought maybe I'd sneak a look while scrounging up my friends.

[YES even though he's destined to lose.]

Oz, if you don't eat now, you're going to be complaining again in less than an hour.

'All you can eat' for someone with a normal stomach!

[Meanwhile, Alice has enough space in her stomach for ten people. Maybe more. Enough to piss off this shop owner, who is currently calling security over to help him and demanding that they apprehend the girl who nearly put him out of business.

Gilbert really doesn't want to get shot at again today...]

He never mentioned that. Is he doing his job well here?

[debtor]

[HUFF. He grabs the plate of fruit tarts instead!

And then pauses, settling down a bit.]

I spoke to her. It went well...

She hasn't blown anything up recently, to my knowledge.

[She tips her face

and looks at him in a mix of contrition and... resignation? Her state is not beyond her. Far from it.]

They're alcoholic. [ she did not go into it knowing this ]

[Be sure to stem your malcontent before it slips off your tongue, Gilbert! She shan't tolerate coffee-denouncing under any roof. It has already been heartbreaking enough to come to terms with how terrible almost every cup she's had has been, she doesn't want her illusions completely shattered just yet.

Hence the tentative suggestion:] Coffee?
