Location: Las Vegas

Summary: Fear and loathing
Warnings: Showgirls and Gilbert weeping.
The statement “Let’s go to Vegas” exists as the multiverse’s quintessential definition of, “well it seemed like a good idea at the time.” Even in this case, it really had, between zombies, insurrection, and the day to day tedium of life on the moon. Besides which, Xerxes Break has a new sentient (sentient-er) weapon, which in a stunning show of good judgement is too dangerous to test on the moonbase, nor in any concentration of people. Las Vegas, set against the backdrop of the vast, desolate Mojave desert, seemed to be a perfect choice.
When our heroes wink into existence, squinting against the early-morning desert sunshine, they’ll find themselves duly welcomed. Come play in the casino. When you feel a bit peckish, indulge in all you can eat. Take your winnings and go shopping; at night, take in a show. And if you’ve done really well gambling, unwind in a ridiculously luxurious suite.

Well, that's true. ( says and accepts it with half a smile. ) Did you know, there's someone who used to be here that said, by this world's calendar, my birthday will be next month? — though it's probably come and gone already, if you wanted to count since then.
( since then, the very coming of age to which break's already alluded; since the baskervilles made their move that changed everything. )

[ He takes a long swig, thinking. This is a difficulty he hadn't considered. There are Transports who've been here a year or more. Oz could very well grow up here. He'll hit a growth spurt and his voice will start changing and it will become patently clear that he is Jack Vessalius.
And then there is his constant anxiety: that the Baskervilles will prove to be a threat to Oz — "Baskervilles" including Gilbert. Oswald seems to have made his peace with Jack Vessalius; however with Lacie here, there are too many variables beyond his control. With his Mad Hatter and Oz's B. Rabbit, he'd had the idea that he could defend Oz, or that Oz could defend himself. But then this Project Chimera affected Oz's abilities, and did who knows what else besides...
It's making his shoulders tense up and hurt, thinking about all this. ]

( he says wryly, for all that anyone seems bothered at an apparent minor having a drink in the first place. it seems a strange thought to him for different reasons. there was a time when two months three months four months seemed a long time here and now they're coming up on ten, and while the transporter is capricious it's hard not to think of the future without some certainty of being here. he's not so — hollow empty words by now, back in september with a distressed lenalee, it's fine because i want to be here, and in a matter of weeks became very, very untrue. they hang somewhere nearer the middle now, but maybe that's not so important.
it's more interesting to let the drink swish around in the glass than to drink it, really, but that's poor manners. and unbirthday is such a funny thing to say; the last was a picnic under the warm sun, a memory preserved in a photograph from a camera that never had opportunity to see use before, a bright memory that bleeds color into the rest. )

[ He downs his drink in one gulp and signals for another. It's a lost cause, he's aware, but from what he's observed so far, if he could possibly ever get drunk anywhere, it would be here. ]
As I'm sure you've already ascertained, this isn't purely a pleasure trip. I've got a question for you.
[ He crosses his arms on the bar table and leans forward with his head tilted to one side, seemingly fixing Oz in his gaze. ]
Have you tried to use your power since our last chat on the subject? Or, for that matter, since Alice arrived?

it's a little unexpected, though maybe it shouldn't be. he's noticed break's and kevin's disappearance during the day, and he's noticed the choice of location, a desert — a vast, empty space, more importantly — and he's noticed (not forgot) that kevin's a healer and that's dreadfully convenient considering the effect mad hatter can have. he knows that break shares his worries about the united earth replicating a power like b rabbit's, much as he thinks (hopes) it'd be impossible. )

( because — well, there are a number of reasons, aren't there, that he could claim; all true but perhaps none truer than the fact that he hasn't told alice anything yet and still doesn't immediately intend to. )

Fancy taking a little stroll with me out to the desert tomorrow, bright and early? I was there this morning, it's lovely. "Desolate beauty," or so Mister Cecil assures me. I think you'll like it better than this place.

( but what he wonders is where this is coming from, now, whether it's a matter of thinking something has changed or just wanting to confirm either way — or if he thinks, perhaps, that he's found something that can help. a healing, maybe even, capable of working on a contract that's been tampered with; kano had suggested looking for something of the sort months ago, but then as now oz hadn't been especially eager for — well, more fiddling at it. )
I'd have to talk to her about it — she might not like having to wake up early!
