The statement “Let’s go to Vegas” exists as the multiverse’s quintessential definition of, “well it seemed like a good idea at the time.” Even in this case, it really had, between zombies, insurrection, and the day to day tedium of life on the moon. Besides which, Xerxes Break has a new sentient (sentient-er) weapon, which in a stunning show of good judgement is too dangerous to test on the moonbase, nor in any concentration of people. Las Vegas, set against the backdrop of the vast, desolate Mojave desert, seemed to be a perfect choice.

When our heroes wink into existence, squinting against the early-morning desert sunshine, they’ll find themselves duly welcomed. Come play in the casino. When you feel a bit peckish, indulge in all you can eat. Take your winnings and go shopping; at night, take in a show. And if you’ve done really well gambling, unwind in a ridiculously luxurious suite.

[ understanding that this is good thing, and winning is definitely one of her favorite things, she jumps up and down in glee despite not really understanding how she won. all she did was... put the coin in...

it is when the coins begin to spit out that she stops to peer at her winnings. if this is how the machines worked here, then she should keep doing it. ]

( SHE IS NOT ALONE IN JUMPING UP AND DOWN because this is a well-earned victory dance — well-earned by her, shh — but he pauses when she does. )

Ah, I think there's — 

( a stand with cups to collect nearby, and he fetches one, bringing it back to hold under the coin releaser. )

[ watching him, she mimics what he does just in case they needed more than one cup! and after a little while of watching the coins fall into his cup she asks: ]

Hey Oz, does this mean I can buy anything I want? [ by anything, she means meat. everyone knows she means meat. really, think of something else sometime qurl. ]

( she sure does mean meat doesn't she. he laughs, looking at her over the money-filled cups )

it is important to treat your servant from time to time after all! so whether he wants something from a shop or tickets to a show she'd be willing to oblige. and this is from alice 'i'm not sharing' b... ahem, yeah.

( he pauses as that sinks in, can't help the way that makes him grin or his cheeks warm )

It's pretty fun here! And the weather is nice — even if it's hot, it's a big change from the moon, and inside the buildings isn't so warm at all.

So you don't like the moon?

[velveteened]

( — makes him pause literally mid-step, looking over at her with some surprise. )

( how does she just know these things! )

If you don't like it we'll leave as soon as we can.

( it's too palpable a reminder of how helpless they've all been in the face of the united earth, unable to protect anything; and for someone who'd been taken by them it's hard not to think of it on a personal level too. a moon base not too terribly unlike the compound in which they'd been kept, and furthermore surrounded by the vastness of empty space that reminds him too much of the abyss. )

It's too cold and dark, there.
