The statement “Let’s go to Vegas” exists as the multiverse’s quintessential definition of, “well it seemed like a good idea at the time.” Even in this case, it really had, between zombies, insurrection, and the day to day tedium of life on the moon. Besides which, Xerxes Break has a new sentient (sentient-er) weapon, which in a stunning show of good judgement is too dangerous to test on the moonbase, nor in any concentration of people. Las Vegas, set against the backdrop of the vast, desolate Mojave desert, seemed to be a perfect choice.

When our heroes wink into existence, squinting against the early-morning desert sunshine, they’ll find themselves duly welcomed. Come play in the casino. When you feel a bit peckish, indulge in all you can eat. Take your winnings and go shopping; at night, take in a show. And if you’ve done really well gambling, unwind in a ridiculously luxurious suite.

( not so different but quite different to even have the luxury of fresh air blown in behind them, still lingering in their lungs. he follows her dutifully, looking around the shop curiously. )

She leads him to the leftmost window display and unnecessarily points to the shoes resting there.]

The heels guilty of catching my eye. They're pretty, aren't they?

( in all honesty he has no idea how she would or does walk in shoes like these, but that's not important right now. )

And once you've worn them all, you can buy even more. A princess ( and there's a wink, a callback to a flowered tiara that'd once graced her head ) can have anything she wants.

[Strikes her as a weird question to ask, eight months into a friendship, but then Lenalee realises she's rarely talked about what she likes to anyone, it's almost difficult for herself to recall.

Thinks on it a moment, then settles on:] Useful things.

( he turns about, contemplative, brightens when his eyes light on something in particular; without another word, he ventures into a nook of the store and emerges carrying — a great big floppy hat. it's even black. )

( but he had a huge, floppy hat on at the beach at gil's insistence, so it's not as though he's got any major problems with dropping it on his head, as he does now. )

[It oddly suits him, she thinks, and an interesting stillness falls over her. Oz has always cut a boyish figure, slim and small and bright-eyed in ways she imagines most girls would hope to be, but with the hat down over his ears, he's almost...]
