[west is only acknowledged when Martin can find a sign saying so; fat chance of being able to even guess with the sun or the Earth blocking it most of the time.
it's almost always at the end of an overlong walk around the halls to find west, no matter how many times he's sure he's got it down. but when he starts off from a different point in the base, he gets all turned around again.
that's why it's a fair miracle he's found west – and the right room number – in under twenty minutes. he's very impressed with himself, even in knowing it's not utterly his doing...

regardless, he stands before the fated door and finds it in himself to knock, his half-a-smile becoming whole as he watches his wrist move, red ribbon and all.

he sniffs, rubbing his eye as he walks toward the kitchen. he carries a not-entirely-but-getting-close-to-entirely crumpled piece of paper in one hand, and it's the paper that's going to help him make pancakes. pancakes that he's going to--]

what he needs is paper, and he's baffled as to why he can't find much of any of it (he's not terribly on-the-ball with the whole futuristic, limited resources refugee base lifestyle yet).
