Tony Stark is used to being looked at. He's used to being stared at, watched, followed, and occasionally involuntarily having his personal space infringed upon - all jokes consisting of variants of 'what personal space' kindly take a step to the left and shoot yourself in the foot.
So it takes him a little while to notice that there's someone actually hovering nearby. Hovering. That's a throwback. He doesn't think someone's actually hovered around him since the last time he decided to take Pepper to a museum just because it was there and she could use the quiet, and half the staff had all but Scooby-Doo-portait-eyed them the whole way through the building. It had been fun, but ultimately the living room had been way less exhausting.
