Why is she being so infuriatingly insistent with all of this? What does it matter if he responds in a manner that she doesn't particularly care for? Honestly, she should be grateful that he responds at all. It's these thoughts that he tightly grasps, just so that he won't consider the possible merits. Then again, she had told him about Fawles, so when he speaks only a slight undercurrent of irritation to his tone, the rest of his frustration hidden somewhere beneath the surface.
