open log » ❝ mission oo1 briefing ❞

Date & Time: 04.04.3312
Location: Training Gymnasium in the Initiative Hold.
Characters: Everyone.
Summary: Everyone is summoned to a briefing and training, pre-mission for the very first mission.
Warnings: None.

There would come a demanding ping on every netbook at once. An urgent call to arms, a request for each and every transport to return to the Initiative Hold immediately. If ignored, the ping would continue until it reached its full volume -- overtaking the senses only until its owner complied, deafening in its insistence. At the Hold, there were several more Initiative attendees to rush each and every transport into a large training gymnasium previously unseen by all residents of the island of Exsilium. The auditorium was massive -- its walls whitewashed, its ceiling patterned with dim, purple ambient lighting.

There was a stage set up near the very back of the large room. A man, stern and young-looking, stood in the center of the stage and held a microphone in front of his pursed lips. Behind the stage was a set of time travel plates more populated than even the arrival room -- there had to be at least forty-five plates, all attended by a member of the Initiative, who stood beside the plate in wait and with a distant expression. Only once all of the transports were successfully congregated into their auditorium, did the astringent, black-haired man begin to speak. "This is a briefing," he began, his voice equally authoritative and matching the expression of great urgency on his angular features. "Tomorrow, we begin our very first mission. A mission into the past.

You will be sent to the year 115 CE, in the midst of a turmoil between the Romans and an Assyrian village. It is in both ours and imperatively your own best interest to help defend this village, and to send the Romans retreating to their own homes. You absolutely must comply with this mission. Not only for yourselves, but for your families at home in their own worlds. For all of us.

You will have twenty-four hours from this time to utilise this gymnasium. You will find an array of weaponry at your disposal, and will have access to your own chosen weapon. Use them. Train fiercely, as you have no choice in this initial mission to pick a different path. You all must fight. After your twenty-four hours of practise, you will be given your cloaking devices -- they will make you untraceable to the native people to the time in which you find yourself. Do not, under any circumstances, remove your cloaking device. It will not only be detrimental to you, but to your friends and your colleagues here, as well as your friends and family in their home worlds.

You will be summoned back from whatever your whereabouts at the success of your mission. Should you die during your mission, you will be summoned immediately and brought into the Initiative Infirmary and you will be healed. Do not die. Do not turn your back on your colleagues and your friends. Remain vigilant. The imperative nature of the success of your mission will be made clear upon your return to this world. There is nothing more that we can give than our word.

Finally, I will be coming with you. I will be your mentor and your guide during our mission and I will do my utmost to keep you safe, prepared, trained and informed. Slowly, our world here in Exsilium will become less and less enshrouded in mystery. Slowly, we are able to reveal our true selves, and with it we hope we will gain a much-needed trust. We do not withhold information easily, and it comes to us at a great cost. Thank you, everyone, and let your sessions begin!

Osprey, freshly arrived from his initial inspection of his quarters, listens, one eyebrow slowly creeping up as the briefing continues.

Honestly? That was it? No instruction on coordinated tactics, no plan for communication, not even directed training? And having them train themselves to exhaustion before sending them into battle?

"Oh, Charlie's starting the foxtrot already," he says, to no one in particular. "And we're wearing the dress."

"Do you expect more so than that?"

Takegami paused in his study a wicked looking knife, raising an eyebrow at the rather militant person. Slim with fine features, he didn't look like someone used to a heavy workout though he had been in the training center long before the call to arms had gone out. He was now letting himself cool down, having placed the bokken from earlier back and took the knife in its stead.

He studied Osprey for a moment and then smiled, pointing with his chin at the man calling himself their mentor.

"They have no idea what we are getting into once we transport there. They have no means of knowing what will the moving stone to get the troops away. Some are already planning diplomacy, others attack. Perhaps one will be more useful than the other. Perhaps not. We will no doubt find that out within our allotted time frame."

Nodding he slid the blade into its sheath, giving the mentor a long look before dipping his head. "Everything goes wrong during the first attempt of anything. Just be glad that we have warning to what we are going to face."

"The last time I was involved with an operation this badly planned, it ended with having to blow up a habitat, with more than a thousand people dead, stacks unrecoverable," Osprey comments.

"And we have no real actionable data about what we're going to face. No idea of force strength or distribution, leadership structure, terrain..." He shakes his head. "All they've done is get a bunch of the kids here upset about who we're going up against. Sub-optimal across the board."

Takegami just chuckled in response. Well, yes, it did sound a horrible way to fight a war, but are they really going to be attacking? Maybe with this first attempt, they were going in as support to the natives, which would a skillset more like his own than that of all out warriors.

"This is where people who can make a military type of strategy should step up, yes?"

It was simple enough in his mind. Those who knew about planning for an army should start to organize the army. Right now the children were working themselves into a frenzy over the possibility of betraying their country, while others were milling about wasting their energies or stabbing themselves in the foot. It didn't take a genius to realize that they will need field leaders. Takegami just wondered why no one else had suggested it yet.

"Most are too busy fretting to actually step into that position from what I've seen." He rolled his shoulders. "Or are too busy trying to go back home."

Osprey sighs. "I don't do wars and battles. I do security penetration, solo or small squad. I slip through the cracks, accomplish my objectives, and get out. To do that, I need intel."

He looks around. "Any idea how to find somebody willing to act like a general?"

"Look to the politicians or the people who claim leadership in their worlds, but I am sure they will need intel in order to figure out how best to use the people we have."

He glanced around the room, noting which ones were probably of a more thinking bent than a fighting bent. There were a few that he would never put in charge of a group - he really did not like the sound of them despite their supposed helplessness. Others though, they might be better.

"I talked to a young queen that sounded eager enough to lead; her king is here as well but he seems more of a follower. I think there are a few students that are a little more than students, and of course there are a few trolls, even if their ages as questionable."
