This log is full of SCIENCE!
Date & Time: March 3rd
Location: Initiative Hold, Labs
Characters: Gordon Freeman, Jesse Pinkman, Morrigan Aensland, anyone else that works at the Labs, anyone visiting. Log is open, feel free to threadjack.
Summary: The daily ins and outs of the Labs!
There's no doubt that anyone who walks into a research lab feels like they're leaving the real world behind, and the Initiative Labs are no exception. Except here the real world left behind in this case was already surreal.
The hallways of the labs beneath the Hold are labyrinthine and lead over, around and under the actual laboratories, occasionally leading to a forcefield-enclosed catwalk or a cluster of offices. They're clean, if in dubious states of repair, and peppered with sputtering holographic screens showing readouts, diagrams and minor personnel alerts that run the gamut from "Dr Laidlaw: your pizza is ready at security desk A" to "Notice: Escaped lab specimen in mutation lab two. Subject is designated 'harmless but frisky.' Female science team members are encouraged to avoid the area until specimen is apprehended." Notices are pinned to boards right next to goofy scribbles and cartoons, post-it notes and calendars that are so out-of-date that some transports may actually remember the year.
Windows from the hallways into the labs show piles of test tubes, signs reading WEAR EYE PROTECTION with holes burnt in them, weird things in tubes, legions of pipes leading to pits teeming with the blue and green glow of radiation, examples of Exsilium's unusual plant and animal life under observation in habitat chambers, propulsion chambers, weapons test labs, et cetera.
Are you there to get a weapon upgrade checked up on? On your way to the training areas and VR chambers and just passing by? Protesting animal testing? Part of the security force? A new transport that got lost checking up on their paperwork? Or... do you just want to stop in and see if the eggheads blow something up today?

"Hey, Gordon. If we really are in an infinite multiverse, does that mean if we explored enough we could actually get a hummerang?"
no subject
Gordon grunts as the tank reluctantly wobbles into place.
"...Spinners and one-mile-to-the-gallon, but the thing comes back every time, right Barney?" He cackles conspiratorially.
It's probably one of those things where we had to have been there.
no subject
He actually looked thoughtful for a minute. "Hey, whatever happened to the science gun? Didn't you have it last?"
no subject
And New Mexico. And Earth. And their realm of existence entirely.
no subject
Barney shrugged. As usual, it was hard to tell what he was actually thinking.
no subject
"Problem with it was, it ate depleted uranium like no one's business. Kind of hard to find that stuff if you're not, you know, actually inside a nuclear-powered government research facility."
"...Got to admit though, it was a helluva lot of fun while it lasted."
no subject
Red tube connects to the red nozzle. Blue wire connects to the blue plug. Shit, this science stuff was easy.
"Hey, you couldn't build a new one, could you? Or a tau cannon? Or any of those fun toys from back home?"
no subject
"Hm, we're only in the center of a wartime research lab a level above any technology we had back in New Mexico and devoted in part to creating specialized weaponry. If you think that's all it takes to make a copy of those things... then you may be onto something."

"I mean, I know wha' a rail is, and wha' a gun is, but I cannae think of a cannon what can fire one o' those, unless it's verra big."
She walks over to Gordon, gives him a kiss on the cheek, and then smiles at the other fellow. "Hullo, I'm Morrigan Aensland." She pauses, then with a small smile, continues, "Doctor Freeman's lady-friend."
no subject
"A railgun is a kind of weapon that uses magnetic coils to launch a projectile faster than any standard gun. Easy as hell to make if you know what you're doing, but the Tau Cannon is a completely different story. That uses a neutron-neutron beta decay set to launch tau particles and nautrinos." Beat. "Uh, in short, a big-ass uranium laser."

"Anyone that Gordon calls his best friend's obviously is a solid fellow, and I'm glad tae meet ye."
no subject
one-thing from back home. Pleasure to meet you too, miss. You known Gordon long?"no subject
"A good month now, I think?" He interjects, scruffing up his hair the way he does when he's nervous.
no subject
She doesn't pretend to understand half of Gordon's nightmare images, but once there was name and face together, things clicked.
(what? don't you look at your dinner before eating?)
no subject
Barney's face revealed nothing but polite interest. Gordon might at this point be getting flashbacks to a particular poker night that ended in Barney going home with full pockets and promises that he wasn't next in dealing with one of Dr. Magnusson's temper tantrums.
no subject
"Morrigan's, err, gotten a digest of what went down back home." Literally. "Granted it was all from my perspective... and trouble doesn't so much follow me around as it does crash on the couch, rack up phone bills and steal beer out of the fridge. It's here to stay."
no subject
Then she smiles at Barney. "But I think Gordon'll be happy with someone he can talk to about things I may not be able to relate to."
no subject
"So, you stop by for anything in particular?"
no subject
[Feb 28th]
Samus could easily relate to that.
Sometimes she would come in her suit of armor, sometimes in casual attire that made her look like an ordinary citizen. Sometimes with coffee, sometimes with liquor. Sometimes extra for the brother she really had yet to get to know. Sometimes with nothing, other than her and her own person. Today it was a thick leather coat and otherwise casual attire (sans the gun perpetually strapped to her thigh), no drinks.
But always, always, Samus would show up unannounced.
no subject
It used to be hey-freeman-your-girlfriend's-here until recently. Gordon is frankly thankful for the change, as he saunters past the labcoat that announced her.
"Thanks. Hey there." He adds to her with a smile. "...No guns today? What's the occasion?"
WOW that was one heck of a typo I made but I can roll with it
"I'm feeling dangerous today." Samus dryly replies, with a ghost of a smirk hinting it humorous to her. Someone was apparently in a good mood.
True, it was extremely unlike Samus to go anywhere without her gun but she knew she could be plenty dangerous without it. Plus it helped having a magical suit of armor she could summon out of thin air whenever she needed it.
...Not that she was expecting to need it on a benign and usual trip to the labs.
"Just taking a detour from my patrol."
no subject
"Got time for some coffee?" Like they usually do. "I've got a lunch I still haven't taken."
The Hold had little in terms of an internal cafeteria, so outside it'd have to be. The weather rain would do him him good anyway. Drizzling rain and fog is refreshing.
no subject
"I'll get an umbrella." A pause. "An actual umbrella and not a newspaper this time."
She enjoyed refreshing rain as much as the next person (when it wasn't acidic, anyway--that was a little too refreshing) but rain in her coffee was less appreciated. There's one hanging on a hook by the door, right? Or did some forgetful lab assistant misplace it again...
no subject
He'd ushered them both to a coffee house across the street quickly. Soon enough they're hovering over the counter, cups 'a joe in hand.
"So... what the hell've you been up to?" He asks conversationally. "It's been a while since you stopped in at work."
no subject
She knew that was a very superficial response however--a few days of prep wouldn't cover all her comings and goings as of late. It was difficult opening up from her own evasive nature, however, even with a trusted friend. Bounty Hunter habits died hard. Still, she gave it a shot.
"...Caught a crook with Nathaniel earlier in the month. Just a pick-pocket. Nothing exciting." Surely there was more occupying her time though...
