Characters: Kenjirou, anyone else.
Spring Equinox. Being from a country that celebrates the occasion as a holiday, Kenjirou usually likes to take this week as an opportunity to pay cemeteries a visit. Ancestors are typically celebrated, but Kenjirou always ends up drifting from that purpose while there. In all honesty, it could be said that that distraction is premeditated - the reason he bothers to go in the first place. Naturally, he isn't able to do it this year. It's funny. He's only done it two times, and yet, it has already become a fully ingrained habit. Maybe it's because he's reminded himself not to miss the opportunity so many times.
It was so much easier back home. For starters, if a situation like this one popped up, there was always an ungraded paper more than willing to take his mind out of it. Here, he doesn't even have what he would consider a job. Which is not to say that he doesn't get paid. Apparently, his stay here is valued by the higher-ups more than him. He's toyed around with the idea of educating people regardless of established institutions, but he's still conflicted on whether he truly has the potential to do something for anything other than personal or professional interests.
He's got to keep himself busy somehow, though. The aforementioned pay has come, and Kenjirou finds himself unable to think of anything to spend it on. Basic living necessities, sure, but apart from that...? There was that one hobby he had back on his world, but...
Well, at least making that activity possible in the first place will be distraction enough. Kenjirou explores an antique shop, looking for cheap items he can disassemble to create what he's planning. It shouldn't be that complicated, given that it won't be nearly as gaudy as the ones back home.

Which is how he'd ended up inside this particular antique shop on this particular day, poking around for what he needs and looking out for anything else he could want.
To his surprise, he is not alone inside the shop. There's someone else here, an older man. Never one to leave his curiosity alone, he calls out a greeting, "Hello, looking for something? Maybe I've seen it."

"I'm building... something. A very important device." His language sounds stereotypical. Not even an actual scientist talks that way. Kenjirou is in the habit of giving his actions away with some tell or other.
"You wouldn't happen to know if there are any discarded pinball machines around, would you? It involves those."
...Sometimes more than just one.

"No, I haven't," he concludes after taking a few moments to think back. "But, the parts to a pinball machine, I might have seen them around. I haven't built one before, but I guess you'd want springs, balls... Ah, those flipper things?"

"I can find lights and metal easily enough."
