( open )
Date & Time: 22nd to the 24th
Location: a synagogue in the city
Characters: Kate & whoever else volunteered to help and/or anyone who wants to see what is going on.
Summary: can we fix it? I hope so.
Warnings: ???
The exteriors of the synagogue aren’t too shabby surprisingly, but the main door needs a good push before it can be shouldered open properly and it creaks loudly as it swings on its hinges. Bits of the walls outside are chipped and discoloured, slowly but constantly being eroded each day in the never ending rainfall that blankets the city.
Inside the building is still as cold as it is outside; windows missing entire panes or broken bits still clinging to the frames, still sharp and dangerous enough to cut deep into one’s flesh if they’re not careful enough. Wherever the windows are, cold wind blows in, and the floor beneath the sills are damp and around the edges have some mold growing. There’s also pieces of glass laying on the floor.
There’s dust and broken bits of wood everywhere. Wooden beams that are supposed to support the building lay half rotting around the building. Some of them are in the way if people want to go further into the building, so they’ll need to be carried out outside by a few helping hands. The air in the building is stuffy and unpleasant, even with wind passing in every now and then.
Honestly, it may feel more depressing inside the worn down building than it does outside in the rain that never ceases.
( ooc: feel free to tag in however as you like! characters can work together, do their own clean-up, take breaks, whatever you want. )

Just a bandage. You don't want it to get infected.
[ Band-aid is the right word, but if he's learned anything about this place so far she'll look at him like he's crazy again if he mentions it. He zips the bag up again carefully before he leaps over another patch of broken glass to present it to her. ]
It'll heal faster if you cover it.

Training to be a medic in your future or something? You're an awfully handy kid.
( Not that she minds, since she's as willing to hold her hand out to him and see what he does -- or how he does it -- with a sheepish smile. )
So much for pulling the older adult card on you.
no subject
When she holds her hand out he unwraps the band-aid as hygienically as he can, keeping his fingertips away from the sticky edges when he gently tucks it around the injured finger. ]
I'm not that much of a kid... [ Lies he totally is. ]
no subject
( Her tone of voice is clearly teasing, while she watches the care he takes with his bandaid.
It's interesting, because she can tell he knows what he's doing. Maybe he's a clumsy kid on his own, or was around a few clumsy kids. Or adults. Some people had that tendency -- she wonders, nonetheless. )
Nothing wrong with being a kid when you still can. You'll grow up soon enough! And if you're up for taking the advice of a stranger, you'll miss out on the chance to be a kid at all if you rush forward too fast.
( It's hit and miss for the kids around here, she knows, she's seen. And she can imagine it's been the same elsewhere; but drat it all, it's fun to be a kid. Be a teenager! Not be in a hurry to grow up.
Though they all were, without fail. )

You think I'm nine?
[ A day into thirteen, and now this. He heaves a frustrated sigh and brushes his hands together before he pushes back to his feet. His pacing is a little restless. ]
Easy to say when you're almost past it all. I bet people already take you seriously.
no subject
Me? You think? I don't know, buster, I think they pretty much only take me as seriously as I take myself!
( She was laughing. It's a more honest answer than others, and she's enjoying teasing him. )
It's a no to nine, does that make you ten? Eleven? Twelve going on eighty-three? You've got old eyes, you could be an old soul!
no subject
But he doesn't pull away from the noogie, just blushes bright red and then rubs at his hair furiously. ]
I'm almost fourteen. [ Or, you know, just barely thirteen.
But there's something about her. Something that keeps tugging at his curiosity and with an opening like that he can't quite resist the feeling. ]
How seriously is that?
no subject
At the moment? Not so seriously at all.
( She moves away, glancing around, back toward a group of people working as a fractured whole. )
But way more seriously overall than I want people to know, so I guess I told a little lie. ( She tells so many of them, little, big, in-between. ) People only take me as seriously as I seem to take myself.
( She smiles, eyes half closed. )
Though it does help being a little bit older than fourteen.
( Sixteen is so much older than fourteen. )

[ He slips his hands into his pockets and for a moment he follows her gaze over to the workers. But ultimately she's just a whole lot more interesting to pay attention to, and before he knows it he's stealing another measuring glance in her direction. ]
It's not just that. It's everybody treating you like you're a kid no matter what. You have to remember what that was like.
no subject
Hmm... I might just! But you'll understand if those memories are hazy.
( Memory was a difficult thing for Exiles brought over from anywhere in the United Earth itself. )
Is having people by you ice cream all that terrible, on another hand?
no subject
Maybe there's a few perks I didn't mention. [ He grin quirks up, maybe a little teasing, this time. ]
Isn't that supposed to be one of those things you don't grow out of?
no subject
( She grins, looking deviously over toward some of the other helpers. )
I figure this isn't a one day project. Think we qualify for a break to do a little research for the sake of urban science?
no subject
[ Yep this place can definitely wait. He matches the grin and slings his bag (tucked-away Robin-suit and all) over one shoulder. ]
You have someplace in mind?
no subject
You know... I might know just the place! We could even see if they've come up with anything new. Up for an adventure, my young adult friend?
( She winks, glancing back at the others before conspiratorially starting to "sneak" away. Sliding toward the closest arch, once she's slipped through it (and checked for Dick), she breaks into a run. )
