Date: May 1st
Location: The Initiative Hold & Courtyard.
Characters: Everyone.
Summary: New Transports arrive and are shuffled into the Courtyard after their initial briefings, while those Transports on the mission to Wollongong return.
Warnings: None.

You've just been hustled and bustled through mazes of information and literal, wide corridors of the Initiative Hold and you've been equipped with your weapon—be it a gun, a sword, or even your existing powers. They've handed you this light netbook and a small pouch of coins (or a debit card, if you're more inclined), and there are several Transports before and after you going through the very same motions. You can hear the Greeter's voice as she walks alongside large groups, telling them all about the history of this place and sharing with you your purpose here in a hurried and urgent tone. "You're in luck that we have enough rooms for all of you; the housing building is getting awfully full. Please, let me show you into the courtyard."

You pass what looks like huge gymnasiums, all with dummies and targets strewn and splayed around the room. Training areas. There are even classrooms, and a few small offices. You're rushed past a large library while the Greeter informs you that you can find almost all your information there, if you've got the time to look—and trust her, you'll have time. You don't spend a lot of time in the bank, and it's a bit of a blur of exchanges with more and more of these strangely-accented and oddly polite-seeming members of the Initiative.

Soon enough, you're in a massive courtyard bustling with all the other Transports. It's not exactly what you'd expect, and it looks more like barracks than anything—huge walls of concrete and stone, separating you from all of the hallways you'd just passed through. It's raining heavily, and dark clouds loom in the air, though it hasn't turned to snow. It's a chill cold, and there are shelters—long cloth hangings that extend from the walls of concrete to house you from the rain, but not enough. Most notably, the courtyard is filled with a marketplace. Even in the cold and the rain, there are several citizens seated at their covered booths and tables, bundled up against the weather. They're selling all manner of their own handmade goods and foods, and citizens and Transports alike are traveling from one small covered shop to another in search of all manner of necessities.

The Greeter's voice has become so faint now, but you swear you can make it out in the back of the crowds as she tells you, "Good luck. Be safe!"

Her voice is drowned out by the busy marketplace, though even the transactions taking place are somewhat subdued. Nobody is overly happy, really, though most citizens can be found with smiles on their faces. It doesn't seem like they're that shocked to see you, either; even if you're not bound in tattered rags and wrapped in heavy shawls as they are. You're welcome to walk up to a shop, and find yourself something to eat—hey, maybe you'll even find something akin to a raincoat. Or, you can join the others under the coverings against the walls. Where am I? What war? She was talking so fast, and it didn't all make very much sense… did anyone else catch it all?

Welcome to the courtyard. Welcome to the Initiative Hold—and most importantly, welcome to Exsilium.

[It's nothing personal, she's just too proud to accept help in her current condition. She glanced at the jacket. There was a moment where it wouldn't look like she'd take the jacket, but Kriem eventually thought better as she reached forward to take the jacket.]

I don't need a doctor.

[No, why would she went she'd been the one to end her life?

She reached up to put the bowler hat on her bare head. It sat perfectly there while Kriem began to slip the jacket on. It was easily too big for her small frame, but did well to hide the gauze taped at her elbows.]

I'm not meant to be here.

I know. I'm sorry. None of us is, but...

[He gives a helpless shrug before waving her towards the tent.]

It'll be okay. What's your name? I'm Jesse.

[personal profile] no_strings_attached 2013-05-03 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[It would be okay? No, it wouldn't. Jake wasn't here so nothing would ever be okay.

She looked over at the tent but she didn't move at first. For someone as out of place looking as Jesse may have appeared, Kriem didn't have a single problem with his appearance. She was used to being around men who were similar.]

Kriem.

[She hesitated only for a moment before finally making an unsteady path for the tent. There was nothing here in this world for her. That thought seemed to have her pausing before she began to take the jacket off.]

How do you know it will be okay? He's not here.

[He stays close enough to catch her if she starts to fall, but not so close that he's crowding her. To him, she seems like she's in shock, which he completely understands. And the gauze on her arms didn't escape his notice.]

Who're you looking for? He might be here or he might be on his way. This place has got a way of bringing us the people we need, you know. That's why it'll be okay.

[His words had her looking back over to him. The jacket was back in her hands ready to offer back, but she kept it in her hold for now.]

Don't make promises that you can't keep, Jesse.

[That wasn't enough to stop the spark of hope that Jake might be here. It was much like a drug to her that she wanted more of even how much she tried to deny it.]

I'm looking for a man, Jake-sama.

[He's unfazed by the pessimism. The chances are honestly just that high that she'll find who she's looking for, if not now then later. And if there's anyone who can sympathize with addiction - to drugs and to people - it's Jesse.]

Jake's a pretty common name. That's my kid brother's name, too. What's your Jake look like?

[personal profile] no_strings_attached 2013-05-03 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Just hearing somebody else with his name was enough to let that annoying spark turn into a small flame in her chest. It was an infectious feeling that she knew she needed to let go of, but couldn't now that it had started.

She watched him quietly for a moment.]

He's got pink and yellow hair and he's covered with tattoos.

[He wouldn't be here. He died a year before she had discovered that he did, so if he wasn't here now, he wouldn't ever be.]

Nice. That'll make him easy to spot if he walks by.

[Jesse pulls a chair forward for her, nodding for her to sit but not insisting on it.]

I ain't seen him yet, but people are gonna be showing up all day long and they'll all walk by here on their way to the apartments. You can stay, if you want. Or I can tell him you were looking if I see him.

[personal profile] no_strings_attached 2013-05-03 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
[She glanced at the chair but didn't take it. Kriem wasn't the type to just sit around and wait for someone. No, if he was here then she would find him, otherwise she would continue on with her journey to search for Jake elsewhere.]

...If you see him...

I would appreciate that.

[Kriem offered the jacket back to him in that moment. It wasn't that she was rejecting him, but more that she had taken care of herself in the past, and she didn't need any handout from anyone.]

[personal profile] hostage 2013-05-03 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
[But he'd feel terrible if he let her walk around in the rain wearing just a hospital gown. He shakes his head, this time insisting:]

Keep it. I'm in Unit 409. You can return it to me later.

[personal profile] no_strings_attached 2013-05-03 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Kriem paused when he refused to take the jacket back. He was only the second person in her life who had actually showed any kindness to her, and she wasn't sure what to make of it.]

You're awfully kind to someone you don't know.
hostage: (appalled ☣)

[personal profile] hostage 2013-05-03 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Um, thanks.

[He sees it more as basic human decency. Chivalry isn't dead and the evidence is Jesse Pinkman.]

It's just a jacket. You need it more than I do.

[personal profile] no_strings_attached 2013-05-03 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Basic human decency? Kriem hasn't met many with that. To most in her city, she isn't even human.

Kriem did offer him a smile though.]

Then I'll have to repay the favor someday.

[She wouldn't let his act of kindness go without repaying the debt.]
hostage: (assenting ☣)

[personal profile] hostage 2013-05-03 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's a deal.

[Anything to get her to agree to keep the thing, really, so he doesn't find her frozen to death later.]

[personal profile] no_strings_attached 2013-05-03 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
[The jacket was pulled back into her possession after that. Kriem didn't put it on right away though.]

This is a strange world.

[Draping the jacket over her arm, Kriem finally look at the marketplace beyond the tent.]

Is everyone here pulled here like I was?
hostage: (mischievous ☣)

[personal profile] hostage 2013-05-03 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Jesse follows her gaze to the market.]

Most of these people were born here. Not here here, maybe, but in this world. Us Transports are the ones that get pulled in, and there's only a few hundred of us. Most of us live in the same building and we train in the same place, so you'll get to know us pretty good.

[personal profile] no_strings_attached 2013-05-03 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Were there others pulled here from Sternbild as well? That was a question that Kriem couldn't bring herself to ask. She was too exposed as she was, and if Jake wasn't here, she didn't want them interfering with her plans if there were others.]

That's quite a few.

[Her feet were starting to get cold standing there, which meant that she needed to start moving again.]

Thanks for the jacket.

[She needed to continue her search anyway.]
hostage: (submissive ☣)

[personal profile] hostage 2013-05-03 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
[He'd hate to delay her, so he gives a slight nod, taking the cue to move aside.]

Good luck.

[personal profile] no_strings_attached 2013-05-03 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Another slight smile was sent his way before Kriem began heading off.]
