They thought that trips to Alaska and getting shots would be the beginning of a relaxing break. Instead they got quarantines and bombs and people getting mad at them. Big. Sigh.

You aren't curious about me at all? That's very stupid of you. If you had attacked me the way I attacked you, I'd have your every detail committed to a file.

Right, right. I remember now--you said something about researching me, didn't you? Have you finished yet?

For the most part. I also had to research your closest connections to be thorough and finish putting together a few things.

[She stands up on her toes to look at him closer.] Hey could I see your eyes? Are you using them right now? I was curious does that mean you can even hide when you're using them? That's a very lucky thing for your ability.

You're looking at my eyes right now, aren't you? Honestly, to a girl who can pull a scythe out of thin air, it's nothing impressive. Just a change in color.

So? I want to see. Please? I'll let you hold my scythe if you let me see them.

[This is a very tempting offer.....]

... I can't refuse when you ask so nicely. [With a sigh and a resigned smile he closes his eyes. When he opens them again, the red shows.] There, there. That's it.

Oh! They glow. [She leans up higher to look into his eyes. Good thing Kano doesn't have lolicon skills.] They remind me of Lady Lambdadelta's after all. Ah... I want to ask more questions but I promised, so first...

[She steps back and raises her hand into the air, summoning it back to her. She holds it out to him.]

It's very light, since it's made out of truth. [Erika giggles.] Do you like it? You can swing it if you like but not at me, please.

[The interest in his eyes is flattering but uncomfortable at the same time. He's not sure how to reciprocate.]

Made of truth, huh? [If a liar like him touches it, would anything happen? The answer seems to be nothing when he accepts it. It is really light. He tilts it around--he's bound to hit someone if he tries swinging it.] How does that work? Do you solve mysteries all day and piece together the right answers to craft it?

[Erika smiles at the questions. He seems interested and she likes showing off knowledge, so it works.]

You might be kidding but you're closer to the truth than you think. [Horrible lame joke.] It's made of 'theories' and 'evidence'. We call it a 'blue truth' that humans can use. My scythe used to have the ability to cut truth from lies but it can't do that here.

[She grins.] That's what I meant by 'gutting' you know. It's just metaphorical for the most part. Let's just say at home, words can really hurt.

You should've specified that in the first place! So, so... if this is made out of facts, could it actually cut someone?

Yes, of course. [Erika reaches out and taps her finger against the point of the blade. She shows him the bead of blood pooling there.] I can do less metaphorical gutting but I don't have interest in that. It's fun to spar, though. Fighting is exciting on a primal level.

I get it... the truth hurts in every sense in your world. That isn't as impossible as it originally sounded!

My scythe had more abilities back home but they probably won't work on a different board. This genre would be science fiction, right? Ah, well. Even that has something to offer with the right amount of thought. Some recent trends in mysteries like to mix in sci-fi elements.

...I think over time I can modify my scythe to work on a meta level here, too. Then I'll be able to show you a splendid display of 'truth'.

Meta? That relates to things outside of stories, doesn't it?

Good! That's right. We're all just 'stories' in the end, pieces on a board. I can hurt or heal with words by knowing the tropes and cliches people follow. That doesn't include myself. [The strange smile he gets isn't arrogant. It's more rueful than anything.]

Imagine being able to protect someone literally with your words. If you could make the statement, "You can't be harmed for reason X" and actually having it work because that follows the rules of the genre. Of course, saying 'reason X' is only for morons. But if you can think fast, I could even train you to debate on a meta level. It's the power to deconstruct the world around you.

[She sighs. Ah, how nice it was to be a witch, even briefly....]

[Just what sort of world does she come from? The more he hears her explanations on truth, the more strange and confusing it sounds. If anything, it seems more and more likely that she'd been plucked from a story of some sort instead of a world.

It's actually incredibly interesting.]

Wow, that's certainly something! But in an uncategorized world like this, outside your story, do you really think you can reach the meta level here?

Hm... probably not. I can follow the different cliches to an extent but there isn't a pattern in the types of people brought here. The mixing of rules makes it really difficult to apply absolutes. Still, I'm bored enough that I'll try. If I do, why don't you play a game with me sometime? You must be bored, too. I can tell from your reckless behaviour.

That depends on how the game'd work. Even if I'm bored, I'm really busy this month! I'd like to know how a game of yours would go ahead of time.

I wouldn't be able to set it up for a while. Games are just debates. Commonly we use mysteries because they're the most interesting. Ah, of course, despite what you might think, I played for the human side. I think you would make a splendid opponent to play as the witch side.

[She holds out both hands to her sides and smiles.]

It's simple. I would play the witch side first for ease of introduction. I would create a murder mystery that seems impossible for a human to have committed. After all, have you ever considered a murder mystery? If it went unsolved, couldn't you easily say it was a revenge ghost or a witch or some other fantasy? The rumours would conceal the truth. The witch side tries to make that deception 'truth' with seemingly impossible crimes. The human side must solve them without a shadow of a doubt.

For the witch, even one unsolved murder leaves darkness in which the supernatural can live. The human side must have a complete victory to win. It's quite a challenge.

[It's obvious that something like this would interest a self-declared detective like her. Kano isn't sure where 'truths' or 'meta' came into the scene, but those aside, it sounds more like an invitation to a debate more than anything else. A part of him is admittedly interested at the chance to show off.]

You're terrible. Truly terrible, since you've caught my interest. Can't you just write a story, send it over, and have us argue over that? Ku ku... it should work if we do that, right?

I'm very terrible. [She sounds so serene about it.] But being terrible is fun. I suppose I could write something but I already planned to for someone else. Maybe I'll see who is the best opponent here.
