They thought that trips to Alaska and getting shots would be the beginning of a relaxing break. Instead they got quarantines and bombs and people getting mad at them. Big. Sigh.

She sighs and gives in, getting herself some food too before coming back.]

What've you been working anyway?

Oh, just a small concoction to boost health and strengthen the immune system. It seems we have a few around who could use it.

Like Shintaro? [The hikiNEET came to mind first.]

He certainly qualifies. [It's spoken sardonically as ever but Jade is genuinely bothered by Shintaro's death.]

[She assumes he knows since he was keeping them supplied with medicine.] ...Thanks for your efforts. I don't think anything could have been done for him at that point.

[He glances at her a moment. Was she trying to comfort him? What an unnecessary gesture.] As he was restored to life, I'm certain the Initiative feels his death is no matter.

It doesn't matter what they think. His death still matters. I'm pretty pissed that they don't care but we already knew that. Still... it probably makes finding a cure less of a priority when it should be.

Unfortunately, that kind of recklessness cost us to a certain degree in the lives of ordinary citizens, despite any retroactive changes. [can you tell he disapproves of the Initiative's approve]

[So does she.] Do you think if someone talked to them, they'd try to fix their approach? Probably not, huh...?

Oh, I'm confident that others have tried. Governments under duress do not, however, tend to change things that work.

How are you going to deal with it?

[Because she has no idea but Jade is an Adult and one that she actually has faith in, so whatever he thinks is the best course of action is worth considering.]

[He raises his eyebrows. Not the answer he was expecting.]

He's never very happy with my friend choices. I don't get why.

[A beat.] Well, you did give him a bad first impression but even then...

Perhaps he's merely very protective of you. It's not an entirely unordinary attitude for friends to take.

Yeah but he's an idiot about it. Well, whatever, being an idiot is part of him.

[She shrugs.] I'm back to being the leader, though. Kaede and Kano are still helping a little but I think I'm fine now.

[He sips his tea] My, my. It seems kids these days need trauma leave even less than old soldiers my age. I'm impressed.

I took a few weeks. That's a lot.

[That and while Kaede is capable she is like... eleven and Kano is Kano.]

In Malkuth, standard military leave for psychological reasons is no less than two months.

Really? [She's kind of interested...] ...You guys took good care of your soldiers, huh?

It's difficult for an Empire to win wars if it is negligent of its soldiers. [almost absently] Of course, we still have plenty of mentally or physically damaged soldiers who have fallen through the cracks in our system.

That probably happens no matter what though... [She can't really imagine a perfect system anywhere. Still.] You seem like a good, uh, commander I guess is what I meant.

[Jade's a little surprised and a little amused.] That's kind of you to say. [Also something that he has a difficult time believing. He is a good officer in a very technical sense. He is not one in the sense he believes she means.]

[The amusement increases.] This is quite unexpected flattery. Between you and Kano, I'm not quite sure what to do with myself.
