[Believe it or not, Nill actually looks a bit better than she did when Kanaya took her to the hospital to begin with. She hadn't stayed long - a day or two at best had gone by before she snuck out, with the help of a few people on the way, because she felt sicker staying there, unable to sleep with all the miserable sick people around her, than she did in her own shitty apartment room with her shitty roommates.

It took her awhile to realize it was the only time she was ever happy to be in that room, or any room since she got here. Even then, she was as alone when she got there as she had been since she arrived here. There was very little in this world that she could bring herself to trust.

God, she wanted to get out of here.

Not the basement, though. That wasn't so bad. The Dan wasn't, either-- Nill genuinely liked the few children in the group she had met, and they had been kind to her. They trusted her. They were about the only thing she did trust these days. One of them, a girl that Nill had never met, even gave her medicine, which... she hadn't gotten until then, because she was busy not being in the hospital.

She has better control now. There's little for Kanaya to be concerned by, though of course there's no way for her to know that. She was mostly just sitting quietly when Kanaya came over, and Nill blinks at first, almost looking confused. Who--

She doesn't need to wonder long, because Kanaya recognizes her. It's all there in her head - Nill, looking so much sicker than she had thought she was in Kanaya's memories, the horrible onslaught, passing out, being taken to the hospital...

Maybe she should have tried to get her attention again before she left, but she couldn't bring herself to. She offers a ghost of a smile, and reaches for the glass of water carefully. She holds it in one hand, and pulls her tablet out to type with the other, though it's all clumsy and careful, unlike her usual practiced grace with it.]

thank you

Kanaya regarded the tablet in Nill's hands with confusion and concentration for a moment before another convenient selection of memories emerged: Only ever texting her before, the insistence and lack of alternative during their prior meeting. Right. Mute. The handicap stirred in her faint nostalgia for her friends' former accidents: Shortly before leaving her original universe she had helped remedy her paraplegic friend, her monocular and artificial-armed lost love was cured by the end of the game, Aradia was a robot, and Terezi... they hadn't smelled each other in any fashion, from her perspective, since the Veil literally lifetimes ago. Humans weren't nearly as open about defects, were they? She knew of two monocular transports and that was it. ...which didn't go far for explaining Nill, admittedly, but she was obviously marked as different in other respects as well.

(And she had been in a hospital. That possibility was magnetic, she wasn't sure if it attracted her or pushed away...)

These observations were more faint subconscious guidelines than thougts considered in detail one by one. Kanaya's response was in fact fairly prompt. She tilted her head as her lips formed a somewhat thinner line than before. "Don't worry much about having to answer me quickly, you know - I've got plenty of time here and you've only got two hands; I don't want you to inconvenience yourself."

[Was her slowness that obvious? The smile, ghostly as it may have been, fades entirely, replaced by a small frown as she glances down at the tablet in her hand. She considers just shaking her head, but doing so will make the room spin, and she'd rather avoid that if at all possible.]

its fine. Im used to it

[It occurs to her that she should probably say something, acknowledge things. It would be polite, and there was no telling what would have become of her if she'd been left wandering the streets instead of pulled to the hospital. Kanaya had probably done very good by her.

Even so, she can't help but wonder - would she have died? And if so, would she have come back healthy?

(Not coming back wasn't an option. But coming back able to breathe properly again would have been nice.)]

thank you for before

[Her memory jumps back to before, wondering if she should read an apology into the gratitude, to what extent Nill is responsible for what happened - then she forces it down again, and even a non-empath might note the twitch in Kanaya's eye as a result. She forces a medium smile.]

Don't mention it. That's what I do. Well, did, hopefully once the bombing is over our entire medical division can shut down.

[Of course she's used to it. That's what happens when you're not some perfect little able-bodied human being. The microaggressions are like the slight discomfort that comes with breathing.]

[It's not hard to miss, but Nill doesn't address it. She doesn't want Kanaya to know if she was responsible for that - as things are now, she's really not certain that she is, or isn't. It just left things that fuzzy.]

do you work int he hospital?

[She remembers seeing her there after she had woken up, the other people she was tending to. Nill had mistaken it for visitation rather than assistance.]

[Hospital - the word demands another quick set of white-walled asylum flashbacks as she outwardly freezes. Then she's back to calmly thinking about how best to answer the question at hand. She doesn't finish the motion of her eyes from the text back up to Nill before speaking.]

I've just been volunteering during this plague. Hopefully they won't need my excuse for help by the time the month is over.
