Her eyes widen, slightly, before a rueful smile curves her lips.

"I do that sometimes." Maybe it's strange, how she's gotten so used to it. "Judo doesn't do that for most people, but I'm...different." Yes, that's certainly a word.

"It's better with two people, either way." The offer is implicit. It would be nice, to teach again.

The comment gets some sort of realization in Tess' eyes. She just nods and makes a small 'o' with her lips, mouthing the word itself before she straightens up. "Different's nice, nothin' wrong with it." A little wide-eyed, she gives a nod, straightens up.

"Even a beginner?" Judo, Judo... She knew a few back from school who talked about it, heard of it from movies, but that was about as close as she'd ever gotten.

Her smile deepens as she dips her head in a happy nod. That's - it was a risk, letting go like that, but it seems like it's paid off. The people here really are different.

"Especially a beginner. You can learn a lot by teaching people."

She's been trying to keep an open mind about things (especially since her encounter with a few others), so Tess does let a little breath of relief out at the nod, the gesture. "I'd be grateful for it, honored even." Moving closer, she's just about face-to-face with the other.

"I'm Tess. Nice to meet you."

She holds out a hand. "Jean, and it's great to meet you, too."

She smiles, gives a firm handshake before giving some space again. "So, where would do you even start with someone who knows little to squat on this?"
astraia: (Hmm)

[personal profile] astraia 2013-08-13 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Jean cocks her head, tapping her lips. "Well, I could just dump the basic stuff into your head, but that would be cheating."
justgo: (aт ѕυcн a pace)

[personal profile] justgo 2013-08-14 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
"How would it be cheating?" We'd be startin' with the basics, wouldn't we?" She doesn't quite get what Jean means, so her brows furrow a little.

"Yeah, but instead of me teaching you, you'd just know them." After a moment, Jean raises her hand to tap her temple.

"How would you do that? It sounds a little painful." And out of a comic book, but she's not that blunt on first impressions. Her head tilts.

Jean twiddles her fingers. "Telepathically. It wouldn't hurt, but it would definitely feel pretty weird." Well, at least if you weren't used to it. At this point, she takes it in her stride.

"I can do the opposite, too. That's how I learn things on a time crunch."
justgo: (and ι wιll ѕιng)

[personal profile] justgo 2013-08-18 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Telep- so you... Ah, got it." The concept, anyway. Tess isn't too sold on idea and it's clear on her face. She clears her throat, thinks on it a little more before: "What way would you recommend?"
astraia: (Smile)

[personal profile] astraia 2013-08-18 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Jean's smile is understanding; most people, she's sure, would be reluctant at best.

"Well, telepathy is faster, but the manual way has worked for a long time." Her brow furrows, slightly. "And we...probably won't be called on a mission in the next few hours."

"Probably." She smiles a little, offers a shrug to go with it. "How 'bout we give it a shot the old-fashioned way? If it ain't workin' out, I wouldn't be opposed to... speedin' things up."

Tapping the staff against the ground as she fixes her grip on. "That alright with you?"
astraia: (Default)

[personal profile] astraia 2013-08-19 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Jean smiles back, nodding. "Completely."

She gestures at the staff. "I can teach you some nice moves with that, too." It was one of the few weapons X-Men worked with.

[personal profile] justgo 2013-08-21 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Now that sounds great." She taps the staff against the ground, looks a little sheepish. "Never really used one so I'll take all the help I can get."

"We practised with them a lot. They're good for immobilising without causing permanent - or lethal - damage." That was always a focus, right from the beginning.

"And your line of work was...?" Color her curious, all things considered. Maybe on the force - maybe not.

Brightly, "Teacher." Her smile is wry, though; she knows that's not going to cut it. "In my world, people like me - they need protection." Her smile twists. "And sometimes the rest of the world needs protection from people like us." No one seems to understand that attacking each other just makes it all worse.

"Makes sense." Some people understood - others didn't, and other complications fell into that line of thinking. A sigh and she gave a nod, took a step back and bowed at the waist. "Well, teacher. I'm as ready as I'll ever be."
astraia: (Default)

pls keep in mind i know very little about judo. or staffs.

[personal profile] astraia 2013-08-29 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
She didn't even realise she was tense until she relaxes. It's - nice, to be understood. Her smile is bright as she returns the bow, before it fades into a thoughtful expression.

"The first thing to work on is stance. There are two specific ones, in judo - neutral and defensive."

Her body shifts; she's still standing straight, legs slightly apart, but her toes point straight and her hands press flat against her thighs.

"This is about discipline and focus, rather than fighting."
justgo: (aт ѕυcн a pace)

if you want, we can handwave it for convenience! o7 but it's okay, I don't know much either

[personal profile] justgo 2013-08-30 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
She watches closely, quiet when the explanation comes and even as she moves herself. Tess makes the attempt to try and mirror the stance, staff held out in front of her as she figures out her footing.

"Discipline, focus. Right." Two things she can have most of the time. Most of the time is the wording,

Her lips quirk. She doesn't pry, but she can guess what Tess is thinking - she can do it, but it doesn't always work out.

"Okay, now spread your feet and bend your knees, just a bit. This is the defensive position." She does it herself, waiting for Tess to imitate her before moving her right foot forward. "This is the right defensive stance." And then she switches. "And this is the left."

Feet moving after with the direction, she adjusts herself properly once Jean makes the stance. She shifts then, right first and then left before fixing herself back into the right defensive stance.

"Little more comfortable with the right, I think." She loosens her grip on the staff a little, still unsure what to do with it."
