Summary: The first meeting of the Exsilium Transport Swim Team

By the time the afternoon rolled around, Collette was down and rearranging the towels on the bleachers by the far wall. All those invited were either going to show up or not -- and new people might stop by hearing voices from inside the arched hall of the indoor pool.

Either way, it was a great distraction for her, and she hoped it would be useful for those who wanted to learn or practice swimming, or just have fun diving after rings and pulling them up off the bottom of the pool. Not to mention, maybe people would start diving!

And so it was that the person arranging the whole thing sat in her suit in her borrowed wheelchair (manual when she'd come over in her electrical) at the poolside, examining the lifeguard whistle around her neck with the stopwatch, and leaning over to poke at the lifeguard buoy.

( Collette waves to Allen, controlling her speed and gliding to a stop nearby. Granted, she gave him a once over in the process, but it doesn't pause and seems to be more appraising herself of his situation than anything else. )

Hey, Allen! I'm so glad you could make it!

( Glad you came is more like it, but make it was a better standard to set. )

Everyone's been complaining about the chlorine. Is it burning your nostrils too?

( she asks with a wink and a grin, catching sight of the blond back against the wall from peripheral vision. huh... who's that guy? )

You find a new recruit?

[Allen waves back, with a smile - it's easy enough to slip on, whether he's feeling it or not.] Hi, Collette!

Is that what that smell is? It's not that bad.

[He's certainly encountered worse odors.

He glances at Link, briefly thrown off by the question, before he turns back to her and leans closer, lowering his voice slightly,]

He's with me, but he's a little shy. I don't know if he'll join.

[That should explain why he's just standing there, silently watching everyone, right?]

( Collette swallows that excuse, leaning toward Allen as his voice lowers, chancing another glance at Link afterward. )

You don't say? What's his name! I'm glad he felt brave enough to come down today.

( And yes, there you have it, Allen. Collette's aiming an affable wave in Howard Link's direction, uncalculating smile on her lips. )

[...Ahaha. He wonders if Link would be cross with him for this, but then he wonders why he should worry. If Link's so intent on following Allen everywhere, then can he help it if he's forced to come up with explanations on the spot like this?

He nods, smile still pleasant.]

Howard Link. He's new here.

Howard?

( Howie, she thinks in her head. )

So he came in the other week? He missed the whole time back in the Cretaceous! Awwh, man...! But he can sort of make up for it here. Is he part of your Order, too?

( not that she's talked about this with Allen in the slightest, but with others, yes, sure. )

[Wait, back up.]

You know about the Order?

[More surprised than anything - who would have told her...]

Mmm! And some of what you guys have to do... and what you're fighting against.

( She says it so casually, with a shrug of her shoulders. )

You've got good friends, Allen, you know? And I'd rather think he's working with the people trying to save a world instead of destroy it. That's the easiest thing to do, destroy something. Being able to make, or protect? That's so much harder!

[A pause, before he nods. This was unexpected.]

I'm very grateful for my friends.

Link... he works for the Order, yes.

( Link? She casts Allen a considering glance, lips still turned up in a smile. It's a nod of her head to show she hears and understands, takes that information in -- and a light question that follows, less on the Order, and more on Howard. )

You call him Link?

[ Quickly trying to think of something to say that won't raise any questions he doesn't want raised, ] Well, he calls me 'Walker.' I think he likes to maintain an air of professionalism, because we're colleagues, you see.

You don't do that with Lavi or Lenalee.

... Does Lavi even have a last name he goes by?

[Good...

question.]

...Not that I know of! I think he's just 'Lavi.'

Don't people usually have surnames when you're from?

[ A shrug. Allen didn't have a last name until he was ten; he's never questioned Lavi's apparent lack of one. ] I suppose most do, but not everyone uses them.

[Perhaps Lavi considers Bookman to be his family name, he's never asked. But he refrains from mentioning it. He's not sure what Lavi's told her.]

( She refrains from making the same conjecture out loud; only because she thinks it, and doesn't want to provide reason for others to turn it back on her.

Since all she's ever gone by here is Collette. )

Do you like that he calls you Walker?

I don't mind it. Is it strange, to call someone by their surname?

It's weird.

( She says without hesitation -- then she giggles. )

Where I'm from, it's weird. I mean, it sounds much more formal and distant, you know? Last names are for people who are older than you, or in positions you respect. Like calling you Dr. Walker! Or Professor Walker. Or Walker, Texas Ranger.

( What she wouldn't give for a modern kid to be around in this instant! )

'Walker Texas Ranger'? [IS THAT A NAME...]

He's a great man of the law.

( On campy television that played at the hospital sometimes. )
