By the time the afternoon rolled around, Collette was down and rearranging the towels on the bleachers by the far wall. All those invited were either going to show up or not -- and new people might stop by hearing voices from inside the arched hall of the indoor pool.

Either way, it was a great distraction for her, and she hoped it would be useful for those who wanted to learn or practice swimming, or just have fun diving after rings and pulling them up off the bottom of the pool. Not to mention, maybe people would start diving!

And so it was that the person arranging the whole thing sat in her suit in her borrowed wheelchair (manual when she'd come over in her electrical) at the poolside, examining the lifeguard whistle around her neck with the stopwatch, and leaning over to poke at the lifeguard buoy.

I asked them if we could borrow as much as they could give us. I really like these. It makes everything so clear.

[He took one of the goggles and he tugged on the band. None of them had buckles.]

Would you help me, please?

Yeah, they're amazing underwater!

( At his request, she grins and nods, gesturing for him to come closer. )

Sure! What can I do for you?

[hornedomen]

[He came closer and he offered the goggles to her.]

I need help taking the band out of the frame and tying it back on so I won't have to pull it over my horns.

They're impressive!

( She says, conversational, accepting his goggles and working on undoing the band by the right side. )

Do things ever get stuck on them?

[hornedomen]

[He sat beside her so she would not have to reach to wrap the band around him]

Always. [He laughed.] Most of the time it's my tunic. Once I accidentally broke my friend's toy because of them.

( Reaching around, she lets the goggles actually rest on his chest, working on getting the band fed back through without needing to worry about adjusting band size just yet. )

Oh no!

( But she laughs, she can see that happening. )

Did you guys gety to fix it?

[hornedomen]

No, it shattered.

[He lowered his head so his horns pointed away from Collette.]

I'd like to give Mahdi a new one but he didn't want it. He said it's because he's a grown-up. I don't understand why that makes any difference.

Mahdi?

( It does sound like him. She hums under her breath. )

Grown-ups like to think they're better at handling things than kids. They're not always wrong, you know?

( She concentrates, pulling the rubber band through slowly, using her nails. )

I know. They probably know more because they've lived longer, right?

[He did not think Mahdi was wrong; he just did not understand. Ico held the goggles to keep them steady.]

I'm not sure that's true... but they sure seem to think so!

( She laughs, tightening the goggle strap. )

[He pulled the goggles over his ears and around his eyes.]
