when my words head for the cracks, will you have my back?

Date & Time: August 12-18
Location: Downtown, the training rooms, anywhere!!
Characters: Dick Grayson Robin and you! yes you
Summary: a) a kid goes shopping b) a kid punches stuff c) a kid haunts the night
Warnings: gross preteen angst

A – the city (day)

[ He keeps his shoulders hunched and his hood drawn up while he moves down a new street, a block down from the spot he’d crossed over an hour ago. He hasn’t been out like this – hasn’t not worn the mask or the sunglasses in... in what really does feel like years. Not since Dick Grayson first had to start disappearing. Since long before all the people here who know Robin – who’d let him eat at their shops in exchange for errands run started locking their windows when they saw him. It stings more than a little bit. More than he’d really thought it would when it was only happening to other people.

He should’ve known sunglasses would be too obvious. That they don’t fit in here any better than the mask does, which is something Batman would have figured out from the start. Without ever having to run away from a pack of kids he could take with two broken legs while they pelted him with mud pies and rotting, smelly scraps. It wouldn’t happen to him. Not even once.

He scuffs his toe on a rock and then kicks it out of the way without thinking, wincing a little at the sound it makes and the way his shoulder pinches when he moves that way. It’s one more thing. One more trip, and maybe when he’s bought the food he needs he’ll have enough leftover to fix the ruined civvies too. ]

B – the training rooms (whenever)

[ Training isn’t supposed to be fun, which is something Batman used to say over and over. It’s starting to make more sense now, now that he’s really seen what slacking off can mean. That it isn't just Robin or Batman or the DA or even Gotham that might die. It's already lost them a whole universe full of people they should have been able to save. That Batman would have found a way to save, no matter what.

He’s thinking it even as he’s arching his back into the swing, that he can’t afford this part – the fun part – the way he could before. Not the way he used to down in the Batcave, whether Batman was watching or not. There’s an extra half-second before he remembers to follow the momentum when it shifts and dismount, while that leftover giddy rush is still lingering in his chest.

He knows it takes practice. Hours and hours and hours of work for it to start making a difference, and when you’re small it takes even longer. It means starting off at a disadvantage.

He winds a little more tape around his fingers, leaving just enough space in between the sets to catch half a breath before he starts in on the bag; hard, sharp, fast strikes and then running jumps and flips. This time he’ll make him proud for sure. ]

C – rooftops (night)

[ There’s not much to see, nothing to hunt and no one to chase down and of course that’s how it has to be on a night like this. When it’s in his blood like an itch, the need to be up and out and flying. It’s almost enough to make him miss Gotham all over again, even though it feels wrong to miss it for those reasons.

He’ll make the rounds in a few minutes, then hunker down if he has to near one of the rowdier spots. But first he needs to do this; leap and dodge and tear through the rain on an imaginary chase that’s always finishes with that other guy just a fingerlength too far out of reach. ]

Thanks. Seems like it's rarer for a world to have them than not. It's strange that there's none of them here, really... or at least not many.
