( open ) i'll fly you to the moon and back

Summary: The Transports are evacuating to the Moon Base. Those on the Moon Base try to settle in and figure out their next move. Setting info can be found here.

The Hold is a flurry of activity, grim faced members of the Initiative group directing supplies and people with the subdued air of people facing their own doom, and wondering at how to process the knowledge. None of the Initiative appears unaware of what will happen; their eyes linger on the Transports, expressions pleading, hopeful, doubtful, or immeasurably sad in turn.

Every eight hours, the space ship is sent back up with a load of people and supplies. The pilots are worked until they can't; the AI stolen ages ago by the Initiative greets and corrals people and supplies at both ends, and in the middle step between.

The network continues to broadcast on narrow channels between the Moon Base and Exsilium, up until the time that all connections are lost, with the carrier located en route to Exsilium. The first airship will pass by without dropping anything, but it's too early to celebrate. At a six hour delay from behind, the second airship arrives, and with it, the dark promise of the Black Code's nuclear weaponry.

The six hour window allows for time for those left behind, either by choice or circumstance, to be pulled to the Moon Base with the successful activation of the Transport Pad. New characters will ultimately arrive with the remainder of those not yet on the Moon Base, all in time to witness the explosive contact of the nuclear warhead with the ground of Exsilium live on satellite.

But until then, there's only the hurry, the silence, and the potential for full out rioting should the Transports spread word to the Exiles inevitably left behind to face this fate.

[ Neither Break nor Emily answer back, and it seems as though Gilbert is going to get his wish...


...until five seconds later, when Break asks off-handedly: ]

When was the last time you slept?

[retraced]

[He tenses; it's mirrored in his voice.]

I think I fell asleep for a few minutes in the observatory yesterday.

[It's been short dozes here and there, but nothing anyone would call actual sleep.]

[maddeninghatter]

[ He's quiet again, for a longer period, as they make their way through the housing wing.

Then: ]

And the last time you had anything to eat?

[retraced]

[Aaaaand then tenser.]

That depends...

[maddeninghatter]

[ He knows all about you and your sensitive stomach, Gilbert. ]

Hm.

[ Another little silence. ]

How long d'you think you can keep going, this way?

[retraced]

I can keep going on fine just like this!

[That irritation is back in his voice, but it's not up to its usual volume.]

It's not like it's by choice...

[maddeninghatter]

"By choice."

Well, you can let me know if I'm right or not, but...

[ He is actually managing to keep his voice light, and his manner pleasant. ]

...I think you've been running about trying to take care of everybody. But you won't let anyone take care of you.

[retraced]

[His silence should speak for itself. They turn another, rounder corner as they head down the hallway where their room is located.]

[maddeninghatter]

That is how these things work, you know.

[ He overshoots the curving corner a little bit, before coming back and following the sound of Gilbert's footsteps. ]

Haha! I seem to recall your getting a tiny bit upset when, ah, people don't ask for help.

[ Upset as in spine-kicking. ]

[retraced]

Hnngh-?!

[Damn it why does he have to bring that up now?! Gilbert walks a little faster, not bothering to wait for him to catch up. Because clearly that will get him to stop talking.]

[maddeninghatter]

[ He keeps up without too much difficulty. He's not so heavily laden, and unlike Gilbert he's been eating: mostly candy because there's been no one to monitor what he's been up to lately, shh. He does, however, hold his tongue until they arrive at their door. Given Gilbert's speechlessness, he'll give his words a moment to sink in.

More likely they've bounced off instead, but he'll give things a chance, anyway. ]

[retraced]

[They might sink in. Maybe. Once he has a moment to get all of Break's things put away, delivered to the right people, sorted away and everyone as comfortable as they can possibly be given the terrible circumstances that they've been put in. He slows down enough that Break can hear him sidling in through a door; there's a number embossed on it that Break might feel later once his hands are empty.]

The bed on the right is yours.

[It's a bunk bed, so that might throw him off at first, but Gilbert doesn't think to point it out. He's gotten oddly used to seeing them in the last week. While Break checks out the bed, Gil starts to set everything down on the floor so that they can sort through...the collection of this-and-that that Break has seen fit to bring with him.]

[maddeninghatter]

[ "Bed on the right," so Gilbert wasn't kidding about sharing a bedroom. A moment's investigation of the bed situation and then... ]

Bunk beds. You're on the bottom bunk, I take it? Ahahaha! Too bad for you~!

[ He's making light of the situation, however....... he knows his own sleeping habits full well. He doesn't think he calls out in his sleep anymore, but--

Well Gilbert, if you haven't been getting any sleep so far, you're certainly not going to get any now. ]

[retraced]

[He bristles. Trust him, he's been dreading it enough sleeping in the same room as Collette for a week; it's probably more than half of what's kept him up at night.]

I've been sleeping on the bottom, but you can have it if you want.

[Again, whatever will make him more comfortable.]

[maddeninghatter]

[ There's a ladder, but he has already bypassed it, kicked off his boots, and simply sprung up to the top bunk. Now he lies on his stomach, stretched out on top of it, arms crossed over the edge with his head propped on top of them. ]

No chance~! ♥

Anyway, anyway - get that all opened up, go on. For, ah, obvious reasons I'm not entirely sure what I bought, so you'd better check, okay?

[ Most of the packages are, as advertised, food. He does the best he can, but one canned good seems very like another. ]

[retraced]

[He starts to do just that, but he pauses before opening the first bag. A curious glance is sent upwards at Break, an awkward moment of silence before Gilbert stands up and moves to the small tabletop area on top of the dresser. There's a medium sized teapot (one of the things he'd grabbed on his way out) that is being used as a pitcher of water that he's been refilling and keeping here for when he and Collette aren't feeling up to going to the cafeteria. He fills a cup and hands it up to Break.]

Here, drink this for now. I'll get tea later.

[The fussing has begun.]

[maddeninghatter]

[ He waves the cup away. ]

Not until you have something to eat, first. I'm pretty sure there are soda crackers in there somewhere. Even your delicate stomach can keep those down~!

[ He's playing hardball. ]

[retraced]

[DAMN IT WHY DOES HE HAVE TO SAY IT OUT LOUD LIKE THAT.]

J-just drink it! You probably didn't have anything to drink the whole trip, right?!

[maddeninghatter]

I didn't. So yes, I'm terribly thirsty.

[ But he's still not taking the cup. ]

[retraced]

This isn't a compromise!

[SHOVING THE CUP TOWARDS HIM AGAIN.]

[maddeninghatter]

[ He's very tempted to take the cup - and pour it over Gilbert's head. But this is, apparently, far more effective torment. ]

Do I have to say aaaahh~n~ to get you to eat? Like a little baby, hm?

[retraced]

I'd like to see you try to--

[His words are cut off by a sudden harsh cough. A mixture of dehydration and lack of nicotine haven't had the best lasting effects on his throat and lungs. At least he's not coughing up tar yet though. He swallows and continues as though nothing is wrong.]

Just take it and I'll find something to eat! You brought enough with you...

[maddeninghatter]

Gilbert--

[ Break drops from his bed, landing lightly on the floor, and pulls the cup from Gilbert's hands and drains it (YOU WIN, IDIOT). And then he's pushing on Gilbert's shoulders, to get him to sit down on his lower bunk. ]

Just... just relax, okay? Haha! Nothing to get worked up about.

[retraced]

[Well, in this circumstance, he's both a winner and a loser. Winner because at least he got Break to drink the damned water, but loser...well, on every single other account. He's caught off guard, so he does indeed stumble backwards until he's sitting down on the bottom bunk with a soft grunt of surprise.]

H-hey, I don't need to relax! Are you listening to me? I already said I was fine!

[maddeninghatter]

Yes of course you're fine~!

[ He slides down onto the floor and begins rooting around in one of the packages. He swiftly finds what he'd been searching for, something he'd bought especially for Gilbert, a bottled drink with ginger in it - which he'd been assured would settle queasy stomachs. He reaches over and hands it up. He'd been concerned before, but now he is actively worried. That cough sounds terrible, and--

Oh hang on.

That's actually.... a familiar cough! ]

Ahahaa, have you been able to smoke, since you've been here?
