It seemed like a good idea at the time...
Date & Time: 2698, fin-de-millenium, just prior to the formation of the United Earth
Location: Las Vegas
Characters: Break, Kevin, Gilbert, Oz, Elliot, Alice, Allen, Lenalee, Rosette, Chrono, Chrysos
Summary: Fear and loathing
Warnings: Showgirls and Gilbert weeping.
The statement “Let’s go to Vegas” exists as the multiverse’s quintessential definition of, “well it seemed like a good idea at the time.” Even in this case, it really had, between zombies, insurrection, and the day to day tedium of life on the moon. Besides which, Xerxes Break has a new sentient (sentient-er) weapon, which in a stunning show of good judgement is too dangerous to test on the moonbase, nor in any concentration of people. Las Vegas, set against the backdrop of the vast, desolate Mojave desert, seemed to be a perfect choice.
When our heroes wink into existence, squinting against the early-morning desert sunshine, they’ll find themselves duly welcomed. Come play in the casino. When you feel a bit peckish, indulge in all you can eat. Take your winnings and go shopping; at night, take in a show. And if you’ve done really well gambling, unwind in a ridiculously luxurious suite.
…or is this how you’re spending the night?
Thirty-six hours in Vegas, what could possibly go wrong?
(ooc: feel free to start threads willy-nilly, name your time and place, threadjack and mingle)

Well, no. Not trust, exactly. He trusts Gilbert, and Raven has the ability to seal away even the most powerful of Chains. However, Gilbert is busy sealing Oz's power; and besides, he's got better things to do than be burdened with an old man's weakness.
No, the sticking point had been trusting Kevin. He is the obvious choice for a partner, having proven his healing ability already. And yet... ]
Ah... don't do that, if you please.
[ He sighs. It's a show of weakness to explain, but that is how this day will go, no doubt: his body failing over and over. It's the reason Kevin is here. Best to get it over with. ]
Don't tug on my hand like that. I don't expect it, and it pulls me off-balance. If you wish to lead me somewhere, do it like this.
[ He twists his hand free and reaches for Kevin's upper arm, just above the elbow. ]
I can feel the movements of your body much more easily this way, rendering to me information about the terrain you're traversing. I can hang back or speed up or let go if I need to.
[ He colors, slightly, because that was hard to say. ]
Yes, well. Anyway. If you're ready.

Still, Break might feel that his body is visibly more relaxed and peaceful, that warm aura that is very much Kevin becoming just a little brighter, as he does precisely as he is told and carefully wraps an arm around Break's waist.]
R-Right. Hold tight, please.
[He drops his human form like a veil, just enough to unfold his remaining wing. Now he feels far more like a divine being, his soft feathers accidentally caressing the side of Break's face.]
no subject
He relaxes, holding on and being held, letting the earth fall away from beneath his feet. ]
Get a move on, Mister Pigeon.
no subject
Through the whole trip, he makes sure that Break is close and warm against the side of his body. And when it is time to make their descend, he catches himself wishing they had taken longer.]
Are you all right?
no subject
Goodness, are you fussing already?
[ You'll be a wreck by the end of the day, Kevin. ]
no subject
...Do not mind my fussing and just do your best. I will not hesitate.
[Break's prediction is most likely accurate, but Kevin is very intent on dealing and keeping him safe. That is what angels are for...or at least, most of them.]
no subject
Yes, all right. Mind what I said about staying out of the way. Angel or not, there's a chance you could be injured, so look sharp, if you please.
[ And he does let go of Kevin's arm and step forwards, feeling his way with his cane. He has been thinking about what to try first. The most innocuous (and in these circumstances) is to put out a bit of Mad Hatter's power and use it to "see." Mad Hatter, being comprised of a gigantic eye, can communicate back to him certain types of visual information. ]
Well! Let's have look 'round, shall we?
[ There's no whooshing or clanking of chains; no hat, nor red eye. The trick is to use Mad Hatter's power without allowing him to fully manifest. All Kevin might feel is a subtle, otherworldly coldness. ]
no subject
[He doesn't like the idea of staying out of the way, but he also understands that Break is concerned about his safety as much as he is about his. He steps back, cautiously, raising his coat's lapels when he feels the cool breeze and attention turned towards him.
What the exactly is that?, he wishes to ask. It is not a demon, and yet it is leeching on Break's life just like one. Kevin does not ask that aloud, though. He dares not ruin Break's concentration.]
no subject
I seeeeeeee you~!
[ It's Break's face and his voice, but it isn't Break who's speaking. ]
no subject
[Kevin takes a step back. There are few things he fears more than being seen. Still, he does not look away. For Break. Clutching the rosary inside his pocket, he watches his...partner.
And then he tilts his head, as if listening to some unknown rhythm, trying to determine if Break needs his intervention.]
no subject
[ He twirls a 360, arms out and sweeping, taking in the red rock, the prickly pear cacti, the little lizards that flick their tongue and skitter away. ]
How horrrrrrribly ugly hahahaha! Don't you think~ so~, Mister Angel~~~~~?
no subject
Silently, he takes a step forward, refusing to indulge the whims of...whatever Mister Break got himself attached to.]
no subject
There's something wrong with the world, there's everything wrong with it! Hahahaha, it's evil, it's awful, it's rotten to the core.
[ He points straight at Kevin. "Emily" shrieks: ]
J̧͏̥̻͚͖͎̟̯̹Ṵ͎Ș̶͉̥͚͎̳̜̞͟T̴̠̜͍͎͔̱̻̙̦͠ ̗̳̕͟͜L̵͈̻̲̠̀I҉̴̨̙̫̼͓͍K̞̖̩̹̱̼̥E̢̛̱͈̣͚͙̻ Y̷̧̺̮͘O̭͙̳̺̦̝̗͇͎Ṵ̸̖͎̯͘͝!̤͜
no subject
But this is not about himself, but Break, and the creature's words are quite indicative of its nature.]
...
[Kevin takes another step in Break's direction. His expression becoming incredibly soft. His voice is steady and calm, and completely otherworldly.]
Enough. You ought to let him go.
no subject
[ A dark mass of nothing springs up behind him. It's the same as what appeared at the factory, so many weeks ago. ]
D̥̘̖̘̬̫̝͓̳͎̙̺̜̓ͧͬ̐ͭ̄̐ͬͧ͑̚͟Iͧ̈ͯ̅ͧ̈̀͢҉͚̯̬̗̖̹̼͖̱̲̯̜̮̖͠S̴͉̰̗̬̞ͧͬ͐̾͘͟A̒͆ͯ̂̓͑̆͗̏̏̊̋ͩ̋̓͆̋̚͏̧͇̦̫̲̠͉͉͔͎͚̬͙̭̙̺̤̕P̴̨̧̫̠͈̠͗̒̂̓͒̽̈͋̓̃͞P̰̞̞̝̝̖̰͎͖̤̙̹̰̥̳̖̩̭̤̎̑ͦ́̓́̍ͫͭ̃͌̂͢͝͡E̍̍̔̑͏́͟͜҉̜͉͓͓̮̫̦̗̖͇̣͍͓͇A͊̈́̊͌͐̂ͫ́̿̓͛͋̀̓̿҉̴̡̢̩͉̰̮̙͔͍͓̪̞͉͇̹͓͙͈̘͚̝͡R̢̧̛̜̮̭̩̠̲̥̫͈͖͚̣ͫ̑ͬͯͦ̒̆̊́͜!̾̔̄ͬ҉̷͙͙̞͓͕̻̭͍

Kevin?
[The name takes him aback. At first, Kevin believes the creature is referring to himself, but that doesn’t seem to make any sense.]
no subject
...
This is, of course, one of the many fictions he tells himself. When Kevin Cecil calls his name, it's enough for him to push aside his powerful Chain and gasp: ]
Don't dally, Mister Cecil.
[ Because that mass of nothing is growing larger and starting to eat away the cactus. ]
no subject
And so he doesn't need to be asked twice. Without hesitation, he leaps forward, wing unfolding as he dodges the black mass. He aims to bury the spear deep into Break's chest, right where he knows the strange tattoo is.]
no subject
GAH!
[ — and falls to his knees, gasping. The dark mass shimmers and fades away. ]
no subject
As he pushes the spear deeper, he leans closer, his free arm surrounding Break, his lips whispering a soothing prayer in his ear. The soft, warm words are Enochian, and they sound as holy as their nature would suggest.
The spear vanishes in slow flames a few seconds later, washing Break's soul and body with ecstatic healing...And yet it will go no further than Break himself wishes it to.]
no subject
Thus the spear comes as a relief. Fingers curling into Kevin's jacket, Break slumps into his arms. He doesn't understand the prayer, but it sounds like sunshine, just like the brilliant aura surrounding him.
...
Oh hang on. ]
Ha... Haha....
[ His laughter is muffled, because his head is still buried in Kevin's shoulder. ]
That went... haha..... better than expected....
no subject
I am sorry...Another angel would have manifested their power in a gentler way.
[But poor Break is stuck with the "Angel of Cruelty". Not for the first time, Kevin is ashamed of his own nature.
However, right now, he has more pressing concerns to address.]
It might be a good idea if you explained what...what we are a dealing with. This...force of destruction... is not something I can exorcise, is it?
[He supports Break by his shoulders and waist so they can sit together on a rock. Finding Break's hand, he does not let it go. This is going to be a long and exhausting day, he can tell.]
no subject
No. I could sever the connection at any time.
[ He can feel the blood seal mirror hanging against his breast. ]
The entity you met is Mad Hatter. He is.....
[ How to explain? He remembers the way Gilbert had looked at him, when he'd found out about his past. Even though it wasn't for the reason he'd feared, he still....
Ugh. ]
He's the reason I'm alive.
[ One of them, anyway. ]
no subject
...In this case, we should probably let him stay where he is.
[He holds Break closer, afraid that he might depart to the land of the dead at any second, his face buried in white hair.
What a nice smelling zombie...]
...Kevin. You came back when you heard my name... And the creature...
[Teased them about it for some reason. A hidden meaning behind its words. A hidden cruelty. ]
