Date & Time: 8/15, early morning
Location: Unit 205
Characters: Nathaniel
noble_nate and Anders
birdhousesoul
Summary: Nathaniel's having trouble sleeping after this
Warnings: Lots of angst, references to violence.
Nathaniel’s exhausted, and close to his breaking point because of it.
Just like most Wardens, he’s used to the occasional sleepless night, borne of avoiding the usual nightmares. This is different, though. He hasn’t gotten more than a couple of hours a sleep per night in the last week, not since that damned “training exercise.”
The one where he’d relived one of his worst memories; the one where he’d watched his lover get torn apart by a broodmother. Knowing that it was just some sort of artificial reality doesn’t help in the least. He hadn’t watched Anders die, had had to turn his head at the last moment. But he’d heard it. Heard Anders’ screams of fear and pain, heard that horrible tearing sound; and though it shouldn’t have been possible with all of the other noise going on, he’d heard the blood splattering against the floor.
It was those sounds that haunted him every time he closed his eyes, and made it impossible for him to even think of sleeping.
He’d taken to waiting until Anders fell asleep before getting up and redressing, slipping out the front door, and wandering through the streets of the Hold. After several hours he’d finally exhaust himself to the point where he could return home and get an hour or two of dreamless sleep, but it wasn’t nearly enough to sustain him.
After yet another night of walking, he’s sitting in the living room now, rubbing tiredly at his eyes. He was debating whether to slip back into bed beside his lover or forego any attempts at sleep and brew up a pot of coffee instead.

The truth, but not all of it.

There aren't darkspawn nearby. Anders would sense them. He wouldn't put it past the Initiative to try importing some -- the Initiative will try anything no matter how ill-advised or poorly planned, it seems -- but no, there are no darkspawn here.
"You know if you don't say what's wrong, I'll just imagine things ten times as bad."

When I watched you die, he refrains from saying, but Anders can likely guess at it.
