What had begun as the idea of two became the realization of at least seven — all landlord approved and with nods of approval from neighboring apartment buildings. It didn't even take up a full block, but it was full enough to attract attention of passers-by on the morning hustle to work, saddling them up with something worth spreading to others along the grapevine throughout the day.

Mostly clothes and household items easily given up, but here and there a few gems. A would-be Initiative member had no need for old board games or a guitar or two, and there would be no time to take care of a pet, even one so curious and darling as Blinky. Now and then, its soon-to-be-ex-owner cast a sorrowful glance its way, only to get a slow, out-of-synch blink in response.

Oh, Blinky.

Parting woes aside, business wasn't bad! With the shabby state of affairs in Exsilium, the chance for something new, even a hand-me-down, always sparked interest. And with so many strange, new recruits, there was bound to be someone curious enough to drop down the cash for the most absorbent fabric ever made (those Germans made good stuff)...

And so, after the work buses left the area, the tables went up and the wares were put out until the workday would come to a close and force the tables out of the street. Someone was bound to score something worthwhile in that time over those three days...!

[Oh, there's another wicked little chuckle as she follows his gaze.]

Why would anyone in their right mind want that thing? I think I've spotted nicer china in nursing homes.

---Oh, oh, look over there! There's a real beauty. That spindly old creature is about to pay top dollar for a computer that looks like it was made in the bloody stone ages. Jesus, who taught these poor creatures to shop?

[ He glances over to see this latest travesty— and pauses. ]

—Ah. Mm. Looks about like the computers we had at home, actually. [ wow embarrassing. He adds, quickly: ] But in this advanced year, I imagine that's quite the grave sin!

What, really? [She blinks.] Wasn't expecting that.

You don't seem fazed by most of the technology here, after all.

Well. [ Awkward topic ahoy. He shifts a little, pulling away on the pretense of straightening a cuff. ] I ran into more highly developed technology in Cittágazze. The mesh of worlds tends to bring it to the forefront.

---you mean that's not your home?

[Discreet as he is, he's not usually one to pull away. She's sensing something here, though not entirely sure what that something is.]

Why, no! I stumbled into it through one of those windows I mentioned. Which is why I have the hope of finding it again.

[ This is much easier to talk about, so he leans back in again with a smile, hopeful under the mask. ]

Speaking of! I don't suppose you've glimpsed any other worlds through empty air recently?

Hm. [ Whatever it was she'd touched on, it's gone now. She halfway considers pursuing it, but there's time for that later.]

Not yet. If I did, you'd be the first to know. Or at least a close second.

There are a hell of a lot of windows in this city, after all.

[ With a little concern: ] I hope you're not looking only through physical windows. It's only a name, you understand, and I suppose to be truly accurate they would be best called "rips", or "tears", something of the like.

....You could've mentioned that before. [There's a touch of annoyance to her voice, but she keeps it in check. It's more for the fact that she now feels like an idiot for peering through windows for nearly a week. OH DEAR.]

Ah. [ Wow, this is awkward. And it's definitely hard to hit on someone you've just made feel so stupid, so— so he laughs, one gloved hand lifting to rub at his face under the mask. ]

I could have, you're right! I'm sorry. Something of a stupid mistake on my part, wasn't it? Gods, but there are days I wonder how I manage to get anything done at all.

Yeah, well...no harm done, right? [She knows he's trying to smooth things over, even if there's no saving her from that lovely little mistake. It's the thought that counts. ]

Let's just forget the past few days have ever happened, and that I was not making a fool of myself by inspecting every window I could find.

[ The laugh smooths into a smile, and he gives another of those affectionate nudges of the shoulder. ]

My dear, I appreciate each and every window you looked through for me. Thank you.

[This time she drops her head down on his shoulder instead, enjoying it for a moment before bothering to speak.]

Can't say I didn't try, love.

[ Well, as long as that's the route they're taking, he'll just wrap an arm around her waist. ]

As long as I'm devoting half of my income to this search, perhaps I might spend a little more for dinner tonight? Assuming you haven't other plans, of course! I'm sure a girl as charming as yourself is in high demand.

Are you trying to sweet talk me?

[The tone is accusatory, though light, and she certainly doesn't shrug off his arm.]

Well, yes! [ No hint of shame! He only smiles. ] Specifically, I was aiming for a date. Perhaps you would appreciate a higher dose of flattery first?

Oh no, no. You've done a fine enough job already. Particularly the part where you mentioned paying for it.

You just name the time and place; I'll be there.

[ Well, at least she's agreeable! Although these sorts of dates would be much easier to facilitate with his family's fortune behind him, like it used to be... oh, well, he'll figure something out. ]

Lovely! Perhaps McFinnin's, on 37th? It's not quite up to par, but it may well be the best this city has to offer.

And with good company a bloody hole in the wall is just as nice as a resort lounge. I'm sure we'll manage just fine.

[ He grins, leans to press a soft, quick kiss to her temple, and pushes himself to his feet. ]

I'll treat you to much better, when the way to Cittágazze is found.

[She smiles. Her attention turns back toward the crowd.] Can't wait.
