( closed ) losing our minds with cabin fever.
Date & Time: early january.
Location: out and about.
Characters: lydia martin & allison argent.
Summary: lydia and allison go house hunting and do other cute winter activities.
Warnings: none!
[ "i'll try scouting out a few locations." "good. i'll come with you." her reply is instant and obvious, nonchalant in typical lydia martin fashion. she is so far from being an honorary girl scout, but she can't exactly go and let her best friend be devoured by yetis. (she would also like to have some say in the house hunt — aesthetics are still important. and wasn't some of the transports living in a castle somewhere?) the sooner they found a place, the better, really.
bundled all the up to her chin, she lets allison lead them around snow drifts and over the occasional patch of ice. she brought her ice skates with her, tied together by the laces which she carries in her gloved hands. allison has the benefit of not only living in exsilium before but she's positive there is something useful in her bag of hunter tricks about surviving in the wilderness.
the cold bites at her cheeks and each deep inhale feels like her throat is being coated in ice. she trails closely behind her friend, instinctively grabbing onto her coat sleeve when her boot sinks a little too far into the snow. ]
You know, this is nooot the winter vacation I was hoping for.
[ it's strange to think they could be gone, away from school and life, for years if it came down to that — not that anyone else back home would know. the average length of major wars were 3-4 years. some had already been here for a year.
god, she misses starbucks. ]
How much farther until the next place? Which, preferably, should be a cabin and not a shed.

Here — try walking in my footsteps.
[ the wind nips at her face and allison hates the perpetual sniffling the environment has left her with. hopefully, finding a nice place to stay in will mean that she'll actually be able to give her body a chance to recover and adapt to their new surroundings. it isn't the first time she finds herself wishing that the new exsilium had chosen to adopt a more californian kind of winter. ]
I don't know. I was hoping to hold out for at least a mansion instead.
[ she looks over her shoulder, lips quirking in a teasing smile before she moves to push forward through the snow again. ]
It shouldn't be too far now. [ or so she thinks. the path still has the barest hints of familiarity and from what she can last remember there was at least one set of buildings around the next bend. ]

despite the wind whipping at her face and snow collecting on her eyelashes, a return smile begins to pull at the corner of her lips. she leans up a little closer so her voice can be heard. ]
Is all of my good wisdom and impeccable advice finally rubbing off on you, Allison?
[ it's in that moment that lydia realizes if there was one person to be stuck in alternate universe with, she's glad it's allison. while she considers isaac a friend, she doesn't know how shacking up with a bunch of werewolves would fair for her. ]
Maybe we'll get lucky and they're all vacant now.
[ too soon? she's aware half of the population was wiped out before they retreated to the moon, but these were semi-desperate circumstances. ]

I don't know if I'd call it all good wisdom.
[ it's teasing, mostly because allison herself is hardly the model for good decision making, or good advice. her smiles dies slightly at the thought of why there may suddenly be a number of vacancies, but she doesn't let her thoughts linger on it. she's come to accept it as reality, even if she doesn't exactly like remembering the particulars. the only thing that keeps her optimistic is the thought that at least some of the population was better than none at all. ]
Yeah. But on the off-chance everyone's already claimed one, I vote that we go for one with heating already in place.
