[Sometime during the night, a few unidentified townsfolk had carried in several boxes with signs attached to them. If spoken to, they only reply that they are busy and they must get these critters inside before it gets too cold outside. All of the boxes are separated and spread out, mostly so that the box of foxes won't chase after the box of rabbits. Each is denoted with a sign to describe what animal resides in the box, accompanied with the following blurb:

"Get in the Holiday Spirit! Adopt a pet today!"

Somewhere near each box is a container of food for the respective animal. The people who had brought the animals inside are no longer anywhere to be found. Somewhere in the outlands, Arthas is watching.]

[Someone that knows about Purrloins! This had to be her lucky day. First Hilda and N, now this guy. Mei can't help but beam back at him, glancing down once at the deer (is it a new form of Deerling? Huh.).]

I know! It's a lot colder out here than in the buildings, so I miiiight. [She plays with one of the kitten's paws.]

Are you from Unova?

[(That's what he thought, too.) Hilbert nods, cradling his tabby. Maybe he'll take this little guy home too. The Thumper to his Bambi.]

You bet. The name's Hilbert, from Nuvema Town. What about you?

[Gotta adopt 'em all!]

You're the one that Hilda mentioned! [She practically gapes at him. This is great. He might have a new Pokemon with him!]

I'm Mei, from Aspertia City. I've never been to Nuvema before, but its nice to meet you!

[Hilda mentioned him!! He's beaming!]

I've never been to Aspertia City either, though I'll have to admit that I don't think I've even heard of it... Anyway, it's nice to meet you!

[But more importantly--]

[She can't quite help her face falling at that. First Hilda and now Hilbert? It didn't make sense that they didn't know where it was even though they came from the same place. It didn't feel fair either.

But nonetheless, she tries to smile back at him, but it's a little subdued now.]

Oh, nothing too much. Mostly that you'd show your Pokemon more than she would.

[She's got to admit, the other girl was pretty shifty about her partner here.]

[She's got reason to be, Mei! But Hilbert feels kind of bad that she was disappointed...]

Nothing else? [He's looking pretty down, but he sighs and shakes his head. And a smile!]

Oh well. Eeks would love to meet a girl as pretty as you! And maybe you can show me on a map where it is? If I haven't seen it yet, it's just because I haven't been there! I didn't know about Lacunosa Town until I traveled that way.

[He is really trying to make her feel better, okay.]

Well, the only other thing she said was that you were the only other trainer she knew about here, and you were from Unova. [Which, regardless of their differences in the timeline, is a big plus to her.] Sorry! That was all.

Ah, sure! I can show you where it is. [Her cheeks gets a little pink, but otherwise she's trying to get past the "cute" comment.] And... Eeks? What kind of Pokemon is he?

Thanks, I'd like that a lot. As for Eeks... Well, he's--

[Eeks zzzaps out of Hilbert's tablet, its temporary home because wow electronics, and screechgreets Mei. The kitten Hilbert had been holding jumps out of his hands with a hiss and a nice scratch, and he winces a little before continuing.]

A Rotom I traded a Ditto for. The girl who gave him to me wanted me to take good care of him, so I've been doing the best I can. Eeks, this is Mei. She's from Unova like me.

[Meeiii huh. Mei. From Unova. M e i. Eeks, having a superior memory with keeping track of information gathered (Hilbert tended to remember things about people after he met them rather than before, unless they had something special about them looks-wise), immediately recognizes Mei from what N said and bounces around her wildly.

Hilbert's not getting it.]

[Mei struggles for a moment with her own kitten, the little cat getting the idea of join Hilbert's own kitten on the ground, but the girl hangs onto her, petting her in an attempt to calm her down.

And she doesn't... quite blame the kitten. Mei's never heard of Rotoms before, but there's something almost eerie about the Pokemon. It looks harmless enough, but it does live outside of a Pokeball, and she gets that weird creepy feeling she had when she was going through that Strange House.

She gulps, hoping that Eeks really, really isn't a ghost.]

W-Wow, I've never seen anything like it before. Uh... what kind of Pokemon is it?

[Hilbert notices her discomfort and motions the Rotom back over, and with a sigh it rests above his shoulder.]

Electric- and... Ghost-type. But Rotom's special in that it can take over different electrical appliances and fight using them. Like if he takes over an oven, he becomes an Electric- and Fire-type. It's really cool.

[Yes Eeks would show off but it doesn't have anything nearby. But Hilbert, Hilbert! Think! Goodness!]

[A Ghost.

It figures. Eeks is definitely cute, but Ghosts don't sit well with her.

She sighs, forcing to remind herself that Eeks probably isn't hostile or anything. It seems pretty well behaved actually.]

That does sound pretty cool. [A wry smile. She's being sincere at least.] Sorry. I'm just not that great with Ghost Pokemon.

[idealord]

[Eeks huffs, and zips into Hilbert's tablet. It'll figure out a way. Its Trainer gives the escape a passing glance and shakes his head.]

It's alright, I haven't met a lot of people who were. I think they're pretty interesting myself. Eeks is friendly though, so you don't have to worry about him, honest! If he comes out again. Wonder what's up...

[Pokémon, as their own species, who were already dead. It was intriguing. Did all Pokémon get reborn as a Ghost-type? Did people? And how did they breed? Were they Ghosts at all, or were they simply called that and kept into the tradition of it?]

What about you? Did you get to take anyone along for the ride here?

[That's the part about Ghost Pokemon that bugs her. She doesn't mind a mystery, but not when it involves furniture that moves on it's own and things that can't be explained through normal means.]

Maybe he just likes it better in there? [It's a poor attempt at an excuse, especially since the Ghost seemed kind of interested in Mei herself. Hopefully she didn't offend him...]

Yup! Though, no one as different as a Rotom. Hibiscus, my partner, is a Serperior. She's my very first Pokemon so I guess I was lucky that she came along with me!

[Eeks is preparing something for Hilbert. Don't worry, he'll be out to play again.]

Serperior, huh? Cheren's gave me a run for my money... They're really strong, and really smug. [Fit Cheren to a C, really.] I picked Oshawott myself. They may look a little dorky, but Rotta's never failed me. You're pretty lucky to have your first Pokémon by your side!

[Not that he minds having Eeks.]

I didn't know that Cheren had one... [Well it makes sense that a leader would have more than one kind of Pokemon. But she wonders why she's never seen his Serperior before, or why he never made a comment about being a fellow Snivy trainer.

And well, she can't say much about them being smug. Its sort of their default expression, and Hibiscus has never talked enough for Mei to know if she's super smug or not. Damn quiet natures.]

The Oshawott was pretty cute. They all were! It was pretty hard decision to make.

And that's true, but it doesn't make me miss my team any less.

I guess it's better if they're not all here though. I mean, pitting Pokémon against people might seriously hurt someone and there's barely enough people here to spar against each other properly as is.

[He sighs, reaching for one of the kittens and missing. Hilda, as much as she'd like to battle, probably wouldn't due to the Pokémon she's got, and N... would only spar with those deemed worthy. Which he seems to have done with himself and a girl named Mei, but he probably wouldn't be too eager to use Ninetails in battle here.


Wait.]

Forget what I was talking about, your name's Mei! You know N, right? You're the new Hero of Truth! He said you stopped Team Plasma! [His entire demeanor is changed from sad to excited.]

Heh, yeah. Some of the people here seem pretty tough, but it wouldn't be good for anyone if we sent a lot of people to the infirmary. [There's no easy answer to get Hibiscus the training she needs and craves.

The excitement startles her and the kitten she was holding. The little cat ended up squirming enough for Mei to put her down. And...

Oh geez, really? More Hero stuff?]

I-I-I beat them! But I... I'm not really a Hero or anything fancy! I just beat the Unova's Champion, but that's all! Really!

[So modest! Definitely someone who could be a hero! Forget the other topic, he's solely interested in the latter.]

You're N's successor, right? With Reshiram and all. So you're a Hero in his eyes and I'm sure in a ton of others!

[... Aw, why not. He leans in closer.]

You know, back home, I'm the other Hero. Of Ideals. [This is why he's so excited he found the new hero. Eeks is just rolling its eyes in its home. Seriously Hilbert.] How is the old man anyway, huh? Still kicking? Alder must've been pretty eager to fight you, he likes new talent.

[She's shaking her head wildly, hair going everywhere and entertaining the kitten, who playful tries to follow her hair with a paw.]

You gotta be mistaken! I never-- [Okay, deep breaths here, Mei. Why would Hilbert and N both say things like that?] ...I never beat him, or took his Reshiram. It's still with him, I think... [She's really not so sure anymore, but she knows that she's never fought or taken the dragon before.]

Really? You're the other hero...? [It's a little wistful, but how else can she react. So many people compared her to him along her journey.]

[And wait.

...Old man? Wait, she didn't fight any old men. Except Ghetsis, and he's just a CREEPY old man.]

I didn't fight Alder. It was Champion Iris! Alder just helped me along my journey.

[... So things are a little different. In any case, she's still a Hero (to be) in his eyes. And Champion Iris? Wow, that must've been tough. It was hard just beating her as a Gym Leader!]

Hm... Differences in what you're saying and what he told me aside, you obviously made a pretty good impression on N. That's good! [And everyone else.]

But seriously? Iris got to be Champion? Wow. I kind of want to have a rematch! Did you have fun battling her?

I... I guess. [It's still kind of hard to take in. She tends to forget all about that Hero and Reshiram stuff unless someone reminds her. She's still just a girl from Aspertia.] He's a pretty interesting guy! And... I still kind of owe him.

Yeah, I did. [She sighs, but with a smile.] It was a really tough battle. She's a really good trainer, but super strong. You knew her when she was... a gym leader, right?

He is pretty interesting. Saying something like, "and you and I will be friends!" is kind of unique after we met a second time. [In a bad way, even for Hilbert, but he figured N was just shy. And a little off given the whole dragons legend deal.

He smiles at the mention of Mei's opinions. Iris, Champion. One of the youngest he'd think. What a girl.]

I did! She was a little ball of energy, dragging me around Castelia and Opelucid. That really transferred well into her battling. There's something to be said about a girl like that who can work well with dragons, since they've always been tougher to train for me.

[Even Mei has to recognize that that's a bit awkward, and she laughs a little.] I think he's just not used to people if he said that. But he seemed to be pretty okay with me. [As okay as he was to trust a total stranger to save his partner.]

No kidding! I've never trained a dragon before, though I did evolve a Swablu, but those Deinos that I saw all the way always seemed like they'd be a handful. She definitely seemed like the kind of girl to keep up with them and whip them into shape.

I'm glad he is, N's a good person who deserves good friends. [The N back then, at the beginning of his journey, versus even the one who stood before him with Reshiram were two different people completely. Him growing further is kind of a joy to Hilbert's ears!]

I bet they listened to her every word, no matter how ridiculous it seemed! She puts a lot of faith in her Pokémon and gets it returned tenfold. It's the same with you and Hibiscus, right? I know Rotta and I are totally in sync when we battle.
