Other Worlds: V 1.0

Characters: Elmer and his volunteer squad (and some Initiative NPCs).
Summary: The Initiative is tentatively trying to find a way to get Transports home, as outlined here. This is their first excursion.

The Initiative employees who stand with the Transports at the Transporter pad are silent, nervous, but determined. They’re good words for the entire Initiative Hold today, really. For a room full of scientists all poised at their stations, it’s awfully quiet in here.

Transports and employees alike have been thoroughly briefed, warned repeatedly about the dangers, and finally, thanked for their bravery and contribution to the efforts to find a safe way home for unwilling Transports. (And yes, everyone has been promised a healthy pay bonus, pending their successful return.) There isn’t much left to be said. With one final nod, a white-coated woman at the forefront of the home-side scientists throws a switch.

There’s a hum, a rumble, a light...

...And then a lot of water.

It’s different from being sent back in time on missions; there is disorientation, a fleeting confusion. But as all of those along acclimate to their new universe, they might become aware of their surroundings. The fighters among them, having been warned repeatedly that there could be anything waiting for them on the other side, might even be a little disappointed.

They’re on a giant black cruise liner in the year 2002 — a veritable floating palace, with room for 2500 passeners and 1000 more crew on top of that. They seem to have just left shore, and the group’s en masse arrival on deck has drawn a few curious stares. Fortunately, their holographic devices should already have been activated before leaving, so the stranger-looking ones among them (you know who you are, green, gray, winged, and pointy-eared folks) won’t get more idle curiosity than the rest.

“Well,” says one of your resident lab-coated companions, “Mr Albatross, welcome home. Techs, spread out, get on the readings.” He tosses a doubtful glance at the rest of the Transports, a little apologetic. Really, they’d been prepared for a lot more explosions and gunshots than this. “The rest of you... see what you can find. I have a best-case-scenario list* from the higher ups, supplies they need. If anyone wants to see if there’s anything around here, be my guest.”

So there it is: you have a day, and a luxury cruise liner to spend it on. Better get to it.


*THE SCAVENGER HUNT LIST:
A lot of this list, handed out to the group on request, is really long, complex names of chemical compounds and fuel sources. Really, it’s mostly just wistful thinking on the part of the Initiative. But, hey, how were they supposed to be sure the group wouldn’t find itself teleported into a well-stocked laboratory in a futuristic world?

There is one very mundane mention on this list, though: alcohol. Is there a shortage in Exsilium? Do they just want better quality alcohol back home? Or is this for some extravagant party back in the Hold? Who knows. What is clear is it’s about the only thing on this list available on the cruise liner (although you never know, diligent searchers may get lucky with other items), and the Initiative has only given all travelers about $50 each.

They’ll be told to reconvene in 24 hours in the same place on the deck (except Elmer, who is to stay and look for any longer-term effects), and anyone not there runs the risk of being left behind when they attempt to reopen the portal back. ]]

[ So she's wasted no time trying to familiarize herself with the ship and eventually heading down to the lowest deck. Like Kirian, she thinks their best bet might be in the medical center.

She's very good at sneaking around people. As soon as she sees Kirian, whom she recognized from earlier, she heads over to him casually, wary of any staff that may pass by. ]

Medical facility?

[A glance to her, and he nods. He recalled her from the deck, though he had no name to put to the face.]

Yes. At the very least...I don't think these supplies would be exactly frowned upon.

[Because what are some of the things even on this list???????? At least medical supplies were pretty much always useful, he figured.]

And who might you be?

[ Kate's no chemistry major, so while some of the names are familiar to her, she's as uncertain as Kirian. However, she knows there are chemical compounds in many things they could grab on the ship. It's simply a matter now of how useful the Initiative will find it. ]

Kate. [ She looks down the hall, listening for footsteps. She doesn't hear anything out here, but it's in the medical center that may be a problem if someone's on standby always. ] There might be doctors in the medical facilities.

Kirian.

[He nods his head at her, politely, and smirks slightly.]

I believe I know well enough how to keep the doctors occupied.

[He takes the cane in his left hand and taps it against his right leg. It knocks a bit hollowly.]

Come along, then. I suppose I can prove as a sort of distraction.

[gevurah]

[ She looks down at the leg and then nods. That bit comes as a surprise, but she doesn't act any different once he's revealed that. ]

Alright. Lead the way.

[dawningsun]

[And we're off! Kirian pauses outside the doors for the infirmary, takes a breath, and sags his shoulders a bit. When he steps forward, he's limping a bit more than he was a few moments before.

Acting.

He opens the doors and limps inside, hissing as he does.]

Hello? Is anyone here?

[There is a very bored-looking aide there, who looks up. "Can I help you?".

Kirian frowns it him, gesturing with his cane.]

I need to see whoever is here- a doctor or a nurse, if they are here. I am in quite a bit of pain. Quickly, if you would, I'd rather not-

[He winces, hissing.]

Well? Don't just stand there, you idiot.

[The aide gapes for a second and then rushes back into the office the fetch the nurse. He turns back to Kate.]

I'd hazard a guess that I can keep them distracted for a few minutes.

[gevurah]

[ Kate's kept herself from view while he distracted the nurses. As soon as she's in the clear, she nods and slips into the room, the bag she's been carrying around zipped open.

This is going to be on her conscience, like many other things she's done (she did steal from the military), but she reminds herself this is what has to be done. ]

Give me two. Meet you out on deck?

[dawningsun]

Very well, I'll keep them busy until then.

[He nods at her, stepping further into the medical center and heading off the nurse and aide before they can look into the room where Kate's rifling through supplies.

He lets out a bit of a cry to distract them, and starts demanding to be seen to a room. Two minutes at least, Kate. He's definitely being demanding.]

[ While focused on the objective, Kate didn't want to leave the entire clinic barren so they had nothing to tend to others on the ship for however long the cruise was going to last for. While Kirian keeps the others busy, she makes her around gathering antibiotics, penicillin, antiseptics, and more she can get her hands on.

Her two minutes are nearly up and she gets out of the room and heads back to the deck, like any other passenger aboard and waits for Kirian. ]

[The exam room door opens after a few minutes, and he limps out, nodding to the nurses.]

Thank you, I'll take your advice under consideration.

[A glance to make sure she was ready, and he nods, leaning on his cane as he walked to her.]

I am not to go on any excursions that involve hiking or horseback riding. I'm certain you are heartbroken, Kate.

[And, with that, he walks back through the doors to the medical center and into the hallway.]

[ She vaguely gestures to the bag and smirks. ]

I prefer stage diving myself.

Believe you me, this was hardly my first choice. I wished to explore this world...instead I am here, on a boat, stealing medical supplies like a common rogue.

[How dull.]

Hopefully what we're doing comes in handy for them. Whatever they're planning. [ Because she does not want to steal for no reason. She usually stops crimes, not perpetuates them -- excusing the dozens of laws she breaks in the process. ]

I should certainly hope so.

[A slight smirk, and he holds out an arm for her to loop hers in.]

I do wonder what other excitements this ship might possibly have.

[ Well, they did just gather some materials. Maybe a small break for now would be alright, even if she is very mission oriented.

She slips her arm around. ]

Don't get any ideas, though; I'm not you type.

Never been on a cruise before?

I would have to agree with you, likewise, in that.

[He shakes his head slightly.]

No, I'm afraid my own experience with riding a boat over water has been...decidedly not a pleasure cruise.

[It's not unheard of, especially for the blood elves, but he never cared for parties and the like.]

[ Modern day earth can probably be called an over privileged world to anyone who's not from it. ]

Mostly those with money, elderly couples, or people who've saved up travel on ships like these. They're pricey. Not to mention you'd need free time.

[dawningsun]

Perhaps my people would enjoy experiencing such a thing. Nether knows that even the higher-ranking Magisters have plenty of free time.

[He almost sneered the last words.]

But what of your world? I take it you are from this...Earth, it was called?

[gevurah]

That's right. I imagine it's like Elmer's world, but the only way to tell is if we ever see land -- which I doubt.

What's your world called?

Azeroth, though he are also connected to the remains of the planet Draenor.

I hail from Quel'thalas.

[He pauses, and then nods.]

Ah, but I appear human to you right now, do I not? I am a Sin'dorei, a Blood Elf.

[gevurah]

[ None of those places are familiar to her, not even in passing. ]

A Blood Elf? Different from the other elves we have back at Exsilium?

Not all of them, I would imagine. I share a living space with two others of my kind, so there is a chance, I suppose that you might have seen one or the other.

Who are they?

Belthazar Spellscry, a boy.

...and Adrasteius Bloodspeaker. A most troublesome man.

[He frowns.]

[ What names, she thinks.

However, she shakes her head. ]

They aren't familiar. The only elf I've spoken to here is Galadriel and... I'm not sure if Koltira is one. [ The ears throw her off. ]
