Summary:

a collection of threads throughout June following the Dan's activity with one another as well friends connected to the Dan, put into one post to avoid spamming the comms. Sometimes a dan roll call.

Warnings: Uuuuuh idk lots of gross sick people. Dying! Sad teenagers and friends!

The virus is spreading, and even the Dan is catching it. And so are their friends. This is whatever they decide to do during June while sick. Prose and action spam friendly!

[The moment he finds himself wondering if the Initiative would bring him back should he die from this sickness is the moment he realizes he's in a really, really bad place. With a cold cloth slapped over his forehead and his blanket pulled up to his chin, Shintaro looks around with a fuzzy mind for Momo, who he's sure had just entered the room a few seconds ago. He's sure he didn't imagine the sound of her opening the door and calling him... probably.

He feels like he's going to burn up. His hand is shaky as he pulls it tiredly out from under the blanket once he sees her. His sight is blurring, probably because he had his eyes closed for a while, but he'd recognize that color of her hair anywhere.]

Momo...

[He's got to remind her, make sure she knows to find Kido or Kano, or even Shinji, since the guy promised he'd look out for her.]

[She'd been so sure everyone would get better. They all took the medicine, they all rested. Didn't they all do everything they should have? But the more time passes, the more she can see they're not really getting better, none of them is.

Momo's still on her feet, can still keep going for the moment, but her brother... Shintaro's getting worse and worse and nothing seems to help. Nothing eases the symptoms for long and, more than ever, more than when Kido died, she wishes their mother were here with them. She would know what to do... wouldn't she?

She enters his room, intent on checking up on him, and hears him call her name. She rushes to his side, lightly touching the cloth on his forehead before moving her hand away.]

Y-yeah? What is it?

[He barely feels the fever anymore. It doesn't make being sick any better, but he's been in the state for so long it takes a minute to remember what "healthy" felt like. He thinks he's being dramatic, but as long as he keeps it to himself, he's probably free to think whatever he wants. So he feels like hell and is pretty sure he looks it.

He grabs her hand before it goes too far. Her skin feels cold, but it's probably his hand that's burning.]

You remember, right? If something happens, you go do Kido.

[She starts when he grabs her hand, but doesn't pull away. It's warm though, hot even, not even close to the temperature it should be in. His fever hasn't gone down at all and all Momo can do is grasp his hand tighter, raise her other one to it as well.

Scary. That's what it is. But it's the last thing he needs to hear right now.]

I remember... But nothing bad's gonna happen. You're still going to get better. Right?

I don't know.

[If he minced words right now, it will only hurt her in the end. It was going to hurt her anyway, no matter how temporary deaths might be here. If he really did...]

I don't know, that's why I'm reminding you.

[She looks away, though her grip on his hand tightens.]

...I promise I'll go to them if something happens, [she says at length, voice nearly a whisper.] But until...

[She swallows, switching gears. That's one thought she really doesn't want to complete at the moment.] But I'm gonna stay with you right now. I want you to get better.

[He nods and uses his free hand to push himself up, though the process is slow and shaky and he's almost out of breath just from that. He tightens his grip on her hand in return, and tries a smile at her. It's not like he doesn't want to get better, especially right now when Momo's here like this. But there hasn't been any way for the Initiative to cure it yet, and the only hope he can think of is the thing he witnessed a few weeks ago: the revival of those who fall. Would it work for this disease, too? How did it even work in the first place?]

Sorry. I'm causing you trouble.

[She returns the smile, even knowing it's likely shaky and unconvincing. But he's worrying about her and not about himself when he's unwell, so unwell, and she just doesn't know what she can do to fix any of this. Just sitting up takes so much out of Shintaro and all she can think of to do is to return that smile.

She shakes her head at his apology.] Only because you're being so stupid. It's fine.

I'm resting, aren't I? What more do I have to do before you stop saying that?

[He's drowning. He can't say that to her though, and as he thinks about how Kido disappeared after being shot he hopes that he might sparkle away, too, when Momo isn't watching. How could he leave her to deal with that, even for a short amount of time, when there isn't anybody else here who knows?]

Hey.

Then stop staying stupid things!

[She knows it's probably unfair of her to say that, unfair of her to complain when he's really just worried about her. But the words are out before she can give them much thought. And it isn't like she wants to think too hard about anything just now anyway.]

...What is it?

It probably won't take too long. [He closes his eyes, sighing, opening them up again when he can think clearly. Just be logical about this. He's scared, but he knows the feelings of those left behind more than he knows the feelings of the dying, so he thinks he knows how Momo is feeling. But things are different here, where the dead can come back, so there are things he can reassure her about. Just think about that, and leave the feeling for later.]

And the Initiative can't stand to fall here, so they'll work on something. It'll get figured out. You got that?

Yeah... I get it, I guess... [Logically, she can tell that, even if the worst happens, the Initiative is unlikely to just let things stand, not after they went to the trouble of bringing them all here. Even so, she can't manage to shake off the fear, knowing just how badly her brother's doing.]

They'll fix it, right? Everyone's gonna get better...

Probably. I think they will. [He scoots over, motioning to her to sit down next to him.]

This is probably the UE. The Initiative won't let them win like this. But that's beside the point.

[It all sounds so cold when put like that, when put in terms of winning or losing. But even Momo can tell that, at some level, that's really what it is to the UE and the Initiative.

She breathes out a sigh, leaning slightly against the bed.] We'll just wait for that...

I'll pay attention, all right? Then we'll know when they fix it.

That'd be helpful.

[He lets go of her hand and places his on her head.]

... We'll get home. Mom's waiting -- well, technically, I don't think she knows we're gone -- but we'll get home. So don't worry.

[She lowers her head further on the bed, not complaining when Shintaro places his hand on it. Inclining her head slightly in a nod, she's silent for a moment before answering.]

Okay, yeah... We'll go home and we won't be sick and Mom won't have to worry.

[Momo absolutely has to believe it, has to believe they'll get out of this all right. She knows they will.]

So just rest for now, okay?

I'll do that.

[He ruffles her hair.]

... Don't be a crybaby if anything happens, Kido and the others are sick, too.

[She huffs out a breath at that, but it's enough to make her relax some. This is something familiar between them, something that can ground her.]

I-I'm not gonna cry! [Yes, she is.] I'll be fine!

Stop saying stupid things.

I'm not saying anything stupid, stupid.

You're feeling okay?

Yes, you are, stupid.

[It's said halfheartedly at best though and she soon nods.] I'm feeling better than you are... I'll be okay.

That's not exactly what I meant. [he sighs] But it's fine. Thanks, I appreciate you helping me.

Eh? What are you talking about? What did you mean?

[She raises her head slightly again, though she doesn't take her eyes off him.]

...

If you didn't get it, I won't tell you.

[It's only the fact that she hasn't forgotten that he's sick that keeps her from protesting too much.]

Never mind! It was probably something stupid...

Mmmm. Maybe. I think it was. [He sighs and flops down on his back again.]
