Mission: Bad Science Saves the Day

Date & Time: Mid-Day, 3310 | Present Day June 14th-16th
Location: Andersfeld, in the (far former) state of Alaska. (Also known at one time as Anchorage, Alaska.) | Back in Exsilium, those manning the Transport Pads, or working on developing the antibiotics and administering them to the ill throughout the city. Yet others will need to hop-scotch through time gathering sufficient supplies to save lives.
Characters: Volunteers to alter medical research, people working on antiobiotic cures, people distributing appropriate cures, and those who are doing minor missions into the past to retrieve adequate supplies to treat the sick in the present.
Summary: Transports are asked to help save tens of thousands of lives, first by traveling two years into the past and altering scientific research. Second, by helping with the manufacture and development of antibiotics or other cures, once the mission is complete. Third, by distributing the cure to the affected parties. Fourth, by going on pointed supply missions solo, or with up to two other people, in order to get enough supplies to save people in the present.

Whatever your character decides to do, the weight of saving lives is on their shoulders, unasked, and perhaps unwelcome. What will they do when faced with this decision?

Warnings: Illness. Freezing cold. Possible death. Drunken scientists.

In Andersfeld, the snow falls in thick, fat flakes, winds blowing in gusts up to 60 kph. Everyone is bundled up against the weather. Spirits are generally low, if not outright alcoholic. Safety lines and lights guide those brave enough to venture outdoors from building to building.

For the Transports with a six hour window to alter a future that will kill over a hundred thousand people in three weeks, it's a dangerous and necessary bravery.

In Exsilium, the success of the mission to Andersfeld is felt as soon as scientists notice the virus responding to antibiotic treatments. It becomes a race to finding the most effective means of combating the now bacterial infection, and of mass producing any working cure for distribution.

Some help with the production.

Others hurry to cart the supply out to the places hit most heavily. Yet others work directly with administering the antibiotics, in most cases, via an IV line. Those less heavily affected will be granted ridiculously large antibiotic pills, needing to be coaxed down spasming throats.

Those who need action, or who are no good with the sick, are asked to make countless small trips through time to secure the supplies needed to produce enough of the cure to save the tens of thousands who are ill but not yet deceased.

And for those too ill to assist, now is the time to rest, heal, and get better. In a world like this, one never knows what surprise might next lie in wait. The Transports and the Initiative have thwarted total disaster for now.

Mostly.

"Probably. So then that gives us more time to find our bearings." Asami shrugged her shoulders, the effect subtle under the suit's bulkiness. At least now they had an opportunity to release some thoughts about the recent conflict, and sometimes just that can help someone get by.

"I was in Madrid for that series of battles. Where were you?"

"Moscow," Artie answered. "I chose it because I knew the area, in my home time. But Claudia, my partner, she'd never been in a war zone before, and I ... well, I'd only ever been undercover. Neither of us had been in an active area like that before."
chittybang: (I swear I don't just think you're hot.)

[personal profile] chittybang 2013-07-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no. I'm so sorry. Did you guys make it out okay, or... did anything happen?"
curatesecrets: (this is the opposite of good)

"Well, we made it out alright, but ..." He watches as one of the other Transports, a face he doesn't know, checks their weapon before going through.

"... Claudia'd never had to kill anyone, before, and ..."

He swallows, hard. "She had to. It was him or me. I know she didn't have a choice, but it was something I'd hoped she'd never have to do."
chittybang: (an actual armory... under my HOUSE...)

Asami averts her gaze to the ground. She wishes she could comfortably hold her arms, because the story makes her want to cave in on herself just a little.

"Yeah." She shakes her head. "I had to do it too. I've incapacitated, but I've never killed before that day. Even if there's no choice, it's still so hard to even think about."

She looks back up at him. "You and Claudia aren't alone. And there are others like us."
curatesecrets: (well this was unexpected.)

[personal profile] curatesecrets 2013-07-27 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Behind the helmet, Artie's face falls, and he looks at her with sympathy. "Thank you. I ... I'm hardly about to say I'm glad you had to take a life - that's not what I mean at all! - but ... I ..."

He raises a hand and gestures helplessly - they're both finding it difficult to properly express themselves in hazmat suits, from the look of things. "It really is true what they say about misery and company to an extent, I guess. And not even in terms of schadenfreude, just ... that it's good to know you're not the only one who has to deal with it. You know?"
chittybang: (damn right you pegged me wrong.)

[personal profile] chittybang 2013-08-02 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Right, I know what you mean. It makes me feel better in some way."

She smiles sheepishly and gives it some more thought. "It's like when a friend disappears from here; logically speaking it's better for them, but in a way it's disappointing when they leave. Makes it harder to cope. It's nothing to be ashamed of. For how long have you been here?"
curatesecrets: (well this was unexpected.)

[personal profile] curatesecrets 2013-08-02 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
He nods in agreement as she speaks. "My first roommate ... I barely had time to get to know her before she disappeared. I'm ... used to losing co-workers, let's just say, but that still wasn't easy."

He has to stop and count, and think, and he looks a little surprised at his own answer. "Only two months. ... Somehow, it feels a little longer."
chittybang: (there's a fungus among us.)

[personal profile] chittybang 2013-08-03 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Time drags here. Feels like I haven't been home in years."

It's only been a little over half a year, and her skin crawls at the thought that this place could be her permanent situation as she knows it. Meanwhile, somewhere, somehow, events are proceeding for her back home. She just doesn't have the luxury of experiencing it.

She glances at the portal. "I have a question for you. Maybe it's a little political, but I think it's important."
curatesecrets: (just call me joe cool)

[personal profile] curatesecrets 2013-08-04 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"I work for the government, back home. Everything's political." He shrugs it off and smiles, to show that it's not a problem. "Ask away."
chittybang: (or pastrami.)

[personal profile] chittybang 2013-08-05 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, well how about that. Asami relaxes and continues. "I'm sure you hear this question all the time, but how likely do you think it is that our selection to be here is randomized? Or how much control over the events of our lives do you think the Initiative has?"
curatesecrets: (pretty sure you're wrong)

[personal profile] curatesecrets 2013-08-07 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"I used to think it was a predetermined selection, but I've heard and seen some things recently that are making me change my mind," he frowned, glancing around the room. "As for control, I couldn't say. I'm hardly a conspiracy theorist, if that's what you mean..."
chittybang: (we don't sneeze in this house.)

[personal profile] chittybang 2013-08-08 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. His former statement piques her curiosity. "What's making you change your mind?"
curatesecrets: (excuse me?)

[personal profile] curatesecrets 2013-08-09 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"How young some of the people here are. And how inexperienced." He purses his lips. "If you had infinite worlds and timelines to pull people from to fight a war for you, wouldn't you try to pick the best possible soldiers you could?"
chittybang: (i didn't ask to be born hot.)

[personal profile] chittybang 2013-08-10 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Exactly. I'm certain that's what almost everyone thinks."

She gazes down thoughtfully. All she sees is further inside her suit. "Kids will surprise you around here, though. Oh, who knows what they're looking for anymore."
curatesecrets: (this is the opposite of good)

[personal profile] curatesecrets 2013-08-14 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Whatever it is, we've got to think we're helping, somehow. That there's a point to being here. .... Or all those people in the clinic are suffering for nothing." He looks up at the gate, thinking of how awful Claudia looked, the last time he saw her. "I think ... I'm ready when you are."
chittybang: (i like you. you're hot.)

[personal profile] chittybang 2013-08-23 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it's easy to forget the suffering of others when you're so down on your own luck. Asami finds herself appreciating his insight, and with that she follows his gaze to the gate.

"Alllrighty, let's do it to it." She smiles tiredly at him and gives him a short pat on the arm.
curatesecrets: flamingo-bandit @LJ (this is my happy face)

[personal profile] curatesecrets 2013-08-24 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course. Ladies first." He gestures to the gate as gallantly as one can in the bulk of a hazmat suit, but his smile's still visible through the helmet - and much more genuine than it was when they first started talking.

"... And, Asami? ... Thank you."
chittybang: (so i live or i die or i poop my pants.)

[personal profile] chittybang 2013-08-26 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
She cracks a humored smile; what good conditions for the chivalrous gesture! Not that she minds.

"Hey, no problem. I'll see you around after we get back."

With that, she sends him a just as barely visible wink as the Initiative reps begin ushering the remaining soldiers through the gate.
