They thought that trips to Alaska and getting shots would be the beginning of a relaxing break. Instead they got quarantines and bombs and people getting mad at them. Big. Sigh.

[After typing something up himself, he looks up.]

All right, all right. On the count of three.

One... two...! [Beeeeep. Message sent. She'll find that it's a decent summary of what he's run into in the area.]

[His message, meanwhile, says:

She starts to giggle and grins at him.]

That was too tempting.

[... did she just trick him.

Ah, that giggle and smile makes her seem really innocent, doesn't it. He laughs a little too.]

Tricking me after what our last meeting? That's too low of you!

No, it's perfectly appropriate, isn't it? Actually, I expected you to trick me, too, and it would be a double trick.

[She's nice enough to start working on a report of her interactions with the natives, which basically amounts to which areas have more cowards and which don't get scared as easy.]

Hmm but don't hold that against me. Have you ever stepped on a cat's tail by accident? They claw up your leg even if you didn't mean it. I'm part cat, you see.

I figured you'd get angry at me again. When a cat scratches you, you're bound to act more cautious around it, no matter how much it purrs or how cute it acts. Don't hold that against me either.

That's probably best anyway. Strays are dangerous.

[She bounces over to his side, though, tilting her head curiously.]

You should let me finish your work for you. You can get beat up a lot easier than I can. Also, I'm very bored. My brain is corn mush.

[He takes a step back.] Ah... but aren't I someone boring? You shouldn't hang around with someone like me. Besides, our works are the same, aren't they?

No, my work is nothing. Ah to be more precise, I'm just having fun. You're a little more interesting than I thought you were but to be honest... you and your friends are pretty dull. I'm used to more exciting people but that's fine. Right now we can just pass the time if you let me help you.

So we can spend the time getting to know each other better?

I won't ask you about your relationship status this time. I already know the answer now anyway. If you're interested in mine, I just won't tell you instead of clawing you.

[He definitely won't make that mistake again.]

For the most part. I also had to research your closest connections to be thorough and finish putting together a few things.

[She stands up on her toes to look at him closer.] Hey could I see your eyes? Are you using them right now? I was curious does that mean you can even hide when you're using them? That's a very lucky thing for your ability.

You're looking at my eyes right now, aren't you? Honestly, to a girl who can pull a scythe out of thin air, it's nothing impressive. Just a change in color.

So? I want to see. Please? I'll let you hold my scythe if you let me see them.

[This is a very tempting offer.....]

... I can't refuse when you ask so nicely. [With a sigh and a resigned smile he closes his eyes. When he opens them again, the red shows.] There, there. That's it.

Oh! They glow. [She leans up higher to look into his eyes. Good thing Kano doesn't have lolicon skills.] They remind me of Lady Lambdadelta's after all. Ah... I want to ask more questions but I promised, so first...

[She steps back and raises her hand into the air, summoning it back to her. She holds it out to him.]

It's very light, since it's made out of truth. [Erika giggles.] Do you like it? You can swing it if you like but not at me, please.

[The interest in his eyes is flattering but uncomfortable at the same time. He's not sure how to reciprocate.]

Made of truth, huh? [If a liar like him touches it, would anything happen? The answer seems to be nothing when he accepts it. It is really light. He tilts it around--he's bound to hit someone if he tries swinging it.] How does that work? Do you solve mysteries all day and piece together the right answers to craft it?

[Erika smiles at the questions. He seems interested and she likes showing off knowledge, so it works.]

You might be kidding but you're closer to the truth than you think. [Horrible lame joke.] It's made of 'theories' and 'evidence'. We call it a 'blue truth' that humans can use. My scythe used to have the ability to cut truth from lies but it can't do that here.

[She grins.] That's what I meant by 'gutting' you know. It's just metaphorical for the most part. Let's just say at home, words can really hurt.

You should've specified that in the first place! So, so... if this is made out of facts, could it actually cut someone?

Yes, of course. [Erika reaches out and taps her finger against the point of the blade. She shows him the bead of blood pooling there.] I can do less metaphorical gutting but I don't have interest in that. It's fun to spar, though. Fighting is exciting on a primal level.

I get it... the truth hurts in every sense in your world. That isn't as impossible as it originally sounded!

My scythe had more abilities back home but they probably won't work on a different board. This genre would be science fiction, right? Ah, well. Even that has something to offer with the right amount of thought. Some recent trends in mysteries like to mix in sci-fi elements.

...I think over time I can modify my scythe to work on a meta level here, too. Then I'll be able to show you a splendid display of 'truth'.

Meta? That relates to things outside of stories, doesn't it?
