[open! and a couple closed ones;]
Date & Time: the beginning of July
Location: the market; a café
Characters: Shintaro and you! (and Erika and Momo)
Summary: Entering a café one afternoon, Shin discovers it to be almost full, with only one seat remaining -- next to you! So he nervously approaches. If you're Erika or Momo, you're for one reason or another out shopping with this loser.
Warnings: n/a for now! to be added if anything comes up.
[open prompt; a morning at the café]
[The café is crowded this afternoon. Granted it probably wasn't a huge shop to begin with, but there definitely are more people than he remembers usually seeing, and from what he can see and from what he's told, there's only one seat left at the counter.
He could go home. He could find somewhere else to get coffee. But he'd been distracted the last few weeks and didn't realize he'd forgotten his umbrella (or one of his roommates took it, either his sister or the blue-haired spawn of the devil) until he realized he was soaked, and the café was a walk from the housing building. It made him feel gloomy already thinking about how all the trouble he went through to come here would've been for nothing. He sighs and steps around a table toward the counter, hoping that the person sitting next to that empty seat isn't a scary person.]
Excuse me, um... is this seat taken?
[if you're Erika Furudo you belong here]
[Whenever he asked Erika how she was doing, he would always get the same answer: "I'm so bored." He didn't really know how to keep mystery-loving chopstick-worshipping twelve-year-olds (or at least he thinks that's how old she is) but, to most people, being in their apartment all day without anything to do probably counted as boring. And his sister would talk about wanting to go shopping sometime. He didn't know how much that applied to kids, but it is with that thought in mind that he knocks on her apartment door in the afternoon. When she answers, he curls his hands into fists loosely at his sides, slightly nervous, and states his invitation.]
You said you were bored, right? I'm on the way to the store, if you want to come with me.
[and if you're Momo you're here]
[After Momo's declaration that their apartment was lame and needed decorating and that he needed to help, they spent the last week or soarguing discussing exactly what they needed and how much it would cost for them to get the decorated apartment Momo so wanted.
On the list that Shintaro made Momo write out but has a general idea of in his head are things like curtains and shelves and dishes and appliances (etc. etc.). It's not like Exsilium had a department store for them to get everything at nor did they have the transportation device to carry all of the things back home, so they were limited. But Shintaro glances at Momo's face and hopes that this would satisfy her at least a little as he sighs.]

What are we getting first?

By all means. Unfortunately, I can't say the same thing for waterproof. [ Belying that statement, he gestures for the poor boy to sit. You're lucky he's seen worse, son. ]
Now, don't take this the wrong way, but you're looking a little pitiful.
no subject
I-I guess I do. I didn't realize I forgot my umbrella until I was halfway here...
[But he slides into the seat, very careful not to get Kaji or the person on the other side wet.]
no subject
[ You could be a man of his chosen craft without developing a sixth sense for nervous fidgets, but surely not a very successful -- or living -- one. He drains half his cup in one swallow before speaking again. ]
I'd welcome a change of pace in weather. Rain day in and day out tends to wear on the nerves after a while.
no subject
[He's not entirely opposed to the conversation, he thinks, he realizes, he tells himself. He's just nervous, even after two months of being here, because two years of minimal human interaction made it difficult for him to remember how to properly talk to people, and especially people like this who were older. Older, and male. Aside from teachers he hardly spoke to, he hadn't had someone like that in his life since he was very young... then he wonders for a second if he ever even knew how to talk to people properly in the first place, having always been withdrawn and sullen.]
I... haven't seen the sun in a while either. Back home it was really hot and the sun was bright, I guess I kind of miss it sometimes.
no subject
[ His eyes close shut for a brief moment, primly scratching his chin before dropping his hand to the table. At that, he slips into an easy smile, sliding his coffee cup towards him.
After that epidemic a few weeks ago, your immune system should be capable of handling this just fine. ]
Well? It's my treat. Good brew makes for fine conversations.
no subject
[Wait, what? But he doesn't even know this person's name! They just met! A treat? Huh? Shintaro doesn't try to, nor does he have the composure to, hide the surprise and confusion on his face as he responds hurriedly]
W-wait, you don't have to do that, I mean, really, you don't have to go that far...!?
no subject
And say what of dessert! Ah. This is innocence at its finest.
His hand cusps the underside of Shintaro's jaw, bringing him eye level with a marked stare of far too little lechery, and far too much amusement. He would be able to pick this kid, and he would see for himself what hilarity would spring forth. ]
You're giving me too much credit.
no subject
He spends the next few seconds apologizing profusely and once the man is done assuring him that it's fine, Shintaro turns right back to round on Kaji, obviously flustered.]
W-what was that for?! Please don't do strange things like that!
no subject
[ MAN, HE LIVES FOR THIS... and he none-so-subtlety gives a nod of acknowledgment to the man two seats down, flashing such an disarming smile that there was no possible way any unbecoming ideas could ever surface from the scene. ]
Aren't you going to drink your coffee?
no subject
... You didn't put anything in there, did you...?
no subject
Sheesh. Can't take a joke, can you?
[ Under that ruggedly handsome wrangler exterior was a complex man with a set of values! Values that were definitely up for compromise, but small difference, right? Regardless, Kaji slides the mug back towards his person, nearing it towards his mouth with a defeatist tone. It was hot, and being drenched to the bone certainly didn't mean the kid was feeling comfortable... ]
Ah, what can you do...
no subject
[He doesn't completely suspect Kaji of being dangerous, though. As he watches, he relaxes his shoulders and sighs a little.]
S-sorry... I'm not used to dealing with people so it was kinda-- surprising? [Wrong word, he thinks to himself. He's getting used to people. He brought Shinji ice cream unannounced before. He's just not used to people who're this much older than him being friendly.]
no subject
( a brusque comment, but then kaji remembers this was a child he was had the pleasure of speaking to. of course, it wasn't as if that fact had ever stopped a good dose of reality and cynicism -- but he made it a goal to take pains to assure he drop only a sliver of short language and not a sentence more. in a move to diffuse the sudden tension, kaji finishes the drink and suddenly turns on him with a warm and easygoing smile characteristic of an versed comrade. )
Sorry, ( a scratch of his chin. but again, he always had a way with alienating a select number of people regardless of redress or reparations. perhaps it couldn't be helped? ) that was uncalled for, wasn't it? But I have to say, you do remind me of someone. He's not much older than you, if my memory's still in order.
no subject
[He shakes his head and turns to Kaji a little, curiosity in his voice as he speaks up]
Is that person here, too?
no subject
( kaji raises a hand to draw an imaginary line a little ways under his hairline. making headway with civil conversation here! )
A haircut away from a splitting image.
no subject
Who is it?
no subject
His name's Ikari Shinji. Good kid.
( he returned the mug to his lips, looking at the bottom with what some would call a forlorn look. he'd definitely have to get another. )
What's this? Afraid of a little competition in your field?
no subject
I'm not afraid of any competition or anything like that... but I think Ikari's actually a few years younger than me. He's a good guy, though.
no subject
( details, details. of course, shintaro's a little rougher around the edges, but... )
Ikari still has a ways to learn. I'd even go as far to say that being here has its advantages in that department.
no subject
[He shakes his head, careful not to spray water on Kaji or the guy on his other side.] Honestly, we don't know each other that well, so I don't really know. [Shinji's fourteen or fifteen, or something like that, right? That's younger than Shintaro's sister, so anyone should have things to learn. He doesn't know what advantages mean but that's not his business unless Shinji talks about it.]
Are you like his relative or something?
no subject
( after a long pause in which kaji is free from any doubt that he has succeeded making the boy even more uncomfortable, he laughs with the air of a well-fed jackal. )
No, I admit I'm a bit lacking in that department. Did you say friends?
no subject
Huh? I... yeah, I did say that.
no subject
( it's an offhand comment -- and kaji provides nothing more in elaboration -- until he makes the motions of adjusting in his seat to get a better slant on the boy. )
I should have done this from the beginning. ( he extends a hand. ) The name's Kaji.
no subject
I'm Kisaragi. What's so interesting about it?
