No kidding. [He looks up back at the room, wherever Momo is. He wonders if she'll be okay going back, because he wasn't comfortable inside that base where one step outside meant no air and not being able to breathe. He wonders how it really is like for her.]

How about you?

[Going back to the moon base wasn't an idea Kano really relished either. The longer they spent on the moon, the worse the conditions seemed to go. Nukings and zombies... it feels like too much has happened before the Initiative decided to lock them all up. It's for their own safety. He knows that. But by the same token he knows how horrible it's made Kido feel. There's no privacy, or much time to recover for that matter.]

I'm fine. [The answer slips out easily.] Well, I'm not doing any worse than anyone else. I'll be back in tip-top shape once we get back down.

[Pause.] And what about Shintaro, huh?

I'm used to being inside, so.

[The answer comes easily to him as well. He was used to be cooped up inside. He was used to staring at the sky through a window, wondering what sort of questions she asked when she looked up at it. Wondering what sorts of thoughts she had when she looked up at it for the last time. Always wondering.

He glances up at the sky now -- dark, but bright with light pollution and not pretty at all, starless -- and wonders again.]

I'm just relieved Momo and Ene aren't looking at me like I'll lock my room door again. That's all.

... ahh. I see. [Kano takes a sip from his can, tilting his head up to better look at the blank night sky. How ugly.] To be honest, I don't know what I was expecting from you, Shintaro. After we got to the moon, to be more precise.

[After Ayano, he's trying to say.]

... It's not like there was anywhere to hide.

[He takes a sip. Sighs.]

I can't lock myself up, here. Mom's not here, so I need to be responsible for my sister.

... Ayano told us that a lot. Ah, no, it wasn't just her. It was Mom first! She'd tell her, 'These are your siblings, so take good care of them like a good older sister.' [There's a wistfulness to his words. The memories of that red-bricked house are hazy sometimes, especially near the beginning. But what he remembers the most is being scared until, bit by bit, their older sister took their hands and gave them what they never knew.]

And when we grew up, it was Ayano's turn to tell us-- [at this point, Kano has set down his soda to put a hand on his hip and to wave a finger] --'You're siblings to each other from now on. So be sure to look after each other, no matter what.' Because she took it super seriously, we did too.

[Kano shrugs, and gives a small laugh, like it's funny.] Y'know, that's how she was. We tried our best, but we weren't so used to it at first. We might've missed a couple of key points. But she would've taken a sixty percent effort over zero though, I think. [He raises his hands, clasps them together with a clap.] 'Thank you for trying!' She'd say something like that, with great enthusiasm.

[He feels himself tensing up. A conversation about Ayano. He'd never spoken to Kano about her -- even rarely with Kido, and never with anyone else either. He lowers his can from his mouth, silent as he looks at a point in space away from Kano.]

... Yeah, she would. 'You did your best; there's always a next time.' And then she'd do just as badly the next time or only a little better. Studying with her took hours.

But... she was always working hard. It was like she never bored of it.

She'd thank you for your hard work, too. [It must hurt to push this conversation. But it needs to be said.] A lot of us would.

[He lowers his voice.]

... did she tell you that? Well, well, it's not like it was a secret, anyway. Shintaro's right--she came up with the idea of the Dan.

[He laughs a little.] Hearing a cool line like 'red is the color of a hero' is really impressive when you're a kid. Leader's always tried to make the same impression Sis did when we take new members in.

Aah, I remember your dramatic explanation of the dan when I first woke up in Mary's room.

... She really looked up to her, huh. I didn't even know she had siblings.

She wouldn't be the sort to bring it up unless she thought it was important, I'm sure.

... Who, Ayano?

That's who we're talking about, right?

She talked about meaningless stuff all the time. It was the important stuff she never talked about.

She... seemed really open about everything, but she took that hero thing way too far, I guess.

[He thought of Ayano that way, too. Their hero, who taught them that red was a color to be proud of instead of shamed.

But no hero would've done what she did. Right?] I guess Sis never lost her touch.

I talked to Kido after she disappeared. She... tried really hard to keep what she started, I think. She tried to hold it together, she said.

I think, she already does that well. She's a good leader. She isn't Ayano, but what Ayano was to you guys, she did it for Momo. I think that's pretty impressive.

... Leader always wanted to be like her. It's pretty obvious, isn't it? Playing heroes wasn't as fun anymore--being a hero was what she wanted to do.

[He laughs a little.] Ahh, that's something she really needs to hear now.

I tried telling her.

I don't know if I'm the guy who can speak for Ayano, though.

You're probably the closest hero we've got. We'll take what we can.
