[he relaxes in turn, letting his arms settle on his drawn-up knees.] Not in particular, I suppose... [squinting. but–] But I did make a friend, I think. I talked to Sayaka. [giving an expectant look. there's just the one Sayaka, right? hopefully.]

[revelation]

[ that perks her up, her smile widening into a grin. ] Really? I'm so glad you were able to talk with her.

Sayaka-chan is my best friend, so it makes me happy that you two can be friends too.

[theguideless]

[nodding.] I think so, too. She's really kind, and already gave me a lot to think about. [his nose crinkles with his smile:] I was confused, too...she called you her wife!

[revelation]

She is really kind, she's protected me for a long, long time... even since we were kids.

[ she's smiling fondly until the word 'wife' appears in the conversation and all she can do is laugh bashfully. ] Sayaka-chan is really funny like that. She'll either say that or she'll try to tickle me and that's just the worst!

[he laughs, too.] Well, I'm glad I made it onto her good side...I'm pretty sure I'd be no match for her if I wasn't!

[revelation]

There's no way you could get on her bad side! I'm sure she sees what a wonderful person you are, just like I do.

Oah, [fidgeting.] I don't know about that...You've seen a lot more of me than she has. Not all the good things, either, right? It's been a long time...

[revelation]

Sayaka-chan has a good heart though and I'm sure she can see yours too.

[ she smiles a little, glancing off thoughtfully. ] Over a year now, I think. I still remember when we first spoke, you couldn't get the tablet working... not that I was having much better luck.

[theguideless]

And I'm still not very good at it! [a little laugh, tapering off.] But...more than a year? Years are...a long time, aren't they? [tilting his head a little.] A lot more days than weeks or months are...things like that.

[a beat.] It doesn't feel like a lot, but...it...does, at the same time.

[revelation]

Mm- it's probably... fifteen months, I think. [ hmm. ]

It really doesn't feel like a long time! But I guess I could say that about my entire time here, in April it'll be two years since I first came here.

[ she smiles and laughs. ] I came here when I was fourteen and this year I'll be turning seventeen, it's really something else...

[he stares off, trying to fit the numbers in place. one year being a lot, but seven days or weeks not so much. fourteen, seventeen years...

and he has no idea about his own. huh.

he looks at her again, eyebrows raised, impressed by all this, and hit with another line of thought.]

Another birthday. Right?

[revelation]

Yeah, that's right! Not for another ten months though.

[ speaking of- ] And you're birthday is in September, the same as Sayaka-chan... how old will you be this coming up year, Martin?

Oh, I... [a beat. same as Sayaka's, huh? that could mean remembering it will be easier.

but, right. age?

his mouth twitches.] I, I don't really know! I mean, I've only known when I was twelve, because that was the only number that ever mattered before. And that was a long time ago.

[revelation]

Really? [ hmm. although it was a little strange to not know your age, that didn't mean they couldn't think of something. ]

Well, you don't look older than me. [ taller, maybe but that wasn't a hard thing to do. ] Why don't we say you're sixteen too?

[theguideless]

[grinning:] It'll work for me. I think you'll have to be my birthday and age keeper.

[a thought hits him, and he blindly pats beside and behind him, looking over to snatch a piece of blank paper and his tablet for a writing desk, propping it all on his lap while he finds the pencil.

he writes:]

[he hesitates, not finishing the last of it, feeling the little pride he's got in knowing the letters starting to ebb.]
