[Ezio is a man of knowledge. The more he knew, the better prepared he could be for anything and everything possible. Too often has he seen people caught off-guard and fail for one single missing piece of information.

As it happens, he's trying to learn the layout of the Hold. The quickest routes in, the most complicated ones, the buildings more adequate for climbing and scouting. You can find him nearly anywhere in his Assassin garb, hood on, stalking about the place.]

How long? [ She cants her head, curious. ]

[mentore]

Three months at most, I would say.

[gevurah]

Were there many people who arrived the same time as you? [ She wonders how many people the Initiative needs if they're bringing droves of people in each month. ]

[mentore]

I believe so, si. A small army, perhaps.

[gevurah]

[ She contemplates this for a second. ]

Practically a small army I arrived with, too.

[mentore]

[He pulls back his hood now and there's a visible expression of worry on his face.]

And so the numbers continue to grow with little to be said for why.

[gevurah]

[ She examines him discreetly, noting the scar after his evident concern. ]

Fighting for a cause we're not even sold on. That's a sure-fire way to win people over. [ She snorts. ]

[mentore]

[He shakes his head, but not without an amused huff.] If there is another way to win people to your cause, I don't know it.

[gevurah]

[ While she wouldn't pry any other time, the situation and nature of this place at least helps to cover her curiosity. ]

Are you with or against them?

[mentore]

Neither. I have no reason to fight with them or against them. Not now, at least. I do what I must to survive in this place.

[gevurah]

[ She nods in understanding. ]

It doesn't sound like they'll force those who stay at the sidelines into battle.

[mentore]

And for that I am grateful. I am not going to fight for someone who will not fight for me or tell me what I need to know.

[gevurah]

Hard to tell if they've really got our backs. [ Kate pauses, thinking maybe she's said too much already. She holds out her hand, then. ]

Kate.

[mentore]

Even if they do not support us, I do not think we'd know so soon.

[It takes him a moment to register the gesture as a handshake, something he's not used to doing. He takes her hand with a bit of a firm grip.]

Ezio.

[gevurah]

[ She notes the hesitation and cocks an eyebrow. His clothes alone look pretty archaic. ]

Italian, isn't it?

[mentore]

[He nods, but not without a grin.]

And what gave it away, signora?

[gevurah]

[ What feels like an eternity later, she cracks a small smile herself. ]

I wonder.

Where in Italy are you from?

[mentore]

Firenze. Florence, as they say in English.

[gevurah]

I've never been, though I've seen pictures. It must be beautiful in person.

[mentore]

She must be very different now than how I came to knew her in my time.

[gevurah]

What year is it for you?

[mentore]

1503.

[Said in such a deadpan that even he finds it impossible to believe these days.]

[gevurah]

[ And her eyebrows rise. ]

Wow.

[mentore]

[He scrubs his face and rubs the bridge of his nose.]

Yes, I know.

[gevurah]

[ And she's not even familiar with the setting of this world yet. She can't imagine how he's taking it. ]

The world's changed a lot since then.
