Summary: The Initative needs a new device to be tested and Caesar needs some treasure stolen; both dilemmas can be solved by robbing a bunch of Chinese pirates!
Warnings: gamora kills a lot of things, the end.

The Chinese Seas, 19th Century. The objective is to obtain control of a merchant ship carrying iron ore, gun powder, and various spices that was historically lost to a particularly infamous pirate crew. It's recorded as their only ever win, and the ship itself never returned to port.

The goal is actually to be sent to the merchant ship a day or so before the pirate boarding, survive the pirate battle and get into the pirate hold, and to secure the Treasure of the Nine Kingdoms so that it never returns to Chinese hands. It is indeed gold-plated, and part of a smaller, more modest hoard of gold on board, along with various other goods, spices, and precious stones. There is also a gold plated chamberpot. (Go figure.)

[ Initially, Caesar had been working towards getting sent on this particular mission, as he owed a certain someone a certain amount of gold. He hadn't been entirely sure who else would be sent along, aside from the very much requested Gamora, but he supposed the others could fight...

Anyway, once they're shuffled off to the transporter and dumped into the Chinese port town, holographic disguises and all, they have some time to look around. Not much, though. They have a merchant ship to catch, provided they figure out how to get aboard! ]

[ Caesar's gone ahead and went straight to spying on their ship-to-be, from a safe distance with his spyglass out. He's already working out a plan of action, naturally. Overall, it really can't be that hard to get themselves passage... ]

It'd be easiest to just pay for passage on it, but where would we find funds like that?

[ He's thinking aloud, most like, but feel free to join in. ]

[he receives a tap on the shoulder. once Jericho has his attention, he points toward a small cluster of some rather well-off looking folks chatting it up and going about their business...which is probably also some business of having a fair bit of coin.]

[ To which he turns to first look at Jericho, then in the direction he's pointing. ]

Well now, don't they look well-to-do. [ And back to Jericho again, eyebrow quirked. ] Turning to crime so soon, are we?

[ Not that he'll disagree with it, only that it's somewhat amusing! ]

[his expression kind of falters, wincing at crime. er...well. no.

but...kind of? they need money, and they can't exactly waste time taking on odd jobs...

he sighs, then makes a wait a minute gesture with his hands before backing up and heading back the way they came. he's gotta go a roundabout way and get close to those guys somehow...

who let's the strategist sit around and make the strategies, anyway? PLEASE.]

Hey, wait. I was--

[ Caesar raises a hand after him, but he's already gone. He was only joking, Jericho. Geez. He sighs over people running off on their own, but okay, fine. Let's see what he can do.

He turns back to watch the previously indicated group with his spyglass again. ]

[ And once they're aboard, there's not much to do but stick to their own room (or hiding place, provided how they got on) and wait for the sound of battle. Did anyone bring some cards...? ]

( oz is fairly plastered to a window - or a porthole, depending - apparently pretty mesmerized. but who can blame him - he's definitely never seen an ocean before, much less been on one. )

It's beautiful, isn't it?

[ All the while, Caesar's refused to go near the window. The boat to the UE hadn't even been on open seas, this... this was significantly worse. ]

It's only water.

It's great! There's so much of it...

( but he glances back at caesar consideringly. after a pause: )

Are you getting seasick?

No. Of course not. [ A little. Maybe. ] Although I am beginning to wonder if I might not have a dislike of all travel in general...

[ Talking horses, spaceships, boats bound for pirates. You know, the usual. ]

Maybe you should stand near the window...

( or something, don't be sick in the room please!!! )

Aah, maybe you're just unlucky.

( hopefully not enough so that the ship will sink or something under the weight of caesar's bad luck though. )

( gamora doesn't so much hide as she does make sure she's far away from most of the people on board. there's no point in getting to know them when her job is astonishingly clear - wait until the pirates attack and then do what she does best.

which is why she hangs about on deck for the most part - arms crossed and leaning on the edge of the ship, taking turns staring at the horizon or at the water. or even sometimes inspecting her sword to make sure it's just as sharp as it should always be, sitting somewhere out of the way but still in the fresh air. )

[ Caesar inevitably has to come up from lurking in the small cabin they'd managed to convince the captain to part with. He needs some fresh air and perhaps a wide open space to aim for if he does manage to still be seasick. He hasn't yet, but you never know...

Of course, he turns to head Gamora's way once he spots her. Now getting her on board, that had been the real argument. Some nonsense about women and ships! ]

Don't like being stuck below much, do you?

I don't like people.

( it's a half-truth, but only three people know how desperately she needs people and two of them are dead.

gamora had dealt with the objections to her gender as well as she could - which is to say not well and it might have involved a fair bit of threatening. so much for keeping under the radar. )

[ He stops at the ship railing, leaning against it once he's there. ]

If that's what it is, why volunteer to go anywhere with anyone in the first place?

[ And it isn't something he entirely buys into. She asked to be invited on this particular trip, after all. She got along fine with the UE group. Though, on the other hand, both involve (or involved) killing things, so there is also that... ]

It's not like there's anything better to do here, is there?

( she thought the answer to that was obvious. )

( gamora is someone oz knows of rather than ever having met before, largely from the network and anything he might've heard from caesar or collette about the trip into the ue (caesar mentioning the 'big green space lady' comes to mind). they haven't particularly spoken thus far on this mission, oz noting how, well - intimidating she is with more than a little admiration.

coming out to the deck has more to do with finding fresh air and getting a better view of the ocean than finding any of the others from exsilium, but he approaches her when he sees her, stopping nearby and looking out past the edge of the ship himself. )

( collette probably has her suspicions that gamora is, actually, someone who does appreciate a good ocean view. but since collette isn't there she doesn't feel bad about sidestepping the question for a non-answer.

what she does is wonder how she continually ends up surrounded by children. it's not a matter of if they're capable enough - she knows better than anyone that you can kill at any age - but they're still children and annoying and obnoxious and pama help her why are there so many of them. )

I've never been out on an ocean before, so it'll of course seem pretty amazing to me.

[ FINALLY, the merchant ship is attacked on the dawn of the 14th. At first there's only a chase, but then the ships close in side by side and that's when the real fight begins. Swords clanging, ropes swinging, that sort of thing. Now's their time to board...

And once that's cleared up, they'll have to figure out which parts of the treasure to transport back with them! ]

[Jericho's only read a handful of swash-buckling pirate-type stories before, but he's sure there's a substantial lacking of arr, matey and hook hands in this here actual fight.

that...could be an alright thing, really, but all the same. did it really need to come down to this?

he's trying his best to quickly neutralize as many people – good or bad – as he can to keep the bodycount to its minimum. nobody needs to die over something like this.

he's a specter, zipping from body to body the moment he can have one pair of eyes lock with another, leaving dazed, dizzy, and unconscious warriors in his wake. it's not easy work, but it's for the best an– oof – alright, so this guy has a glass eye. might need to actually do a little hand-to-hand this time around.]

( oz doesn't bother with the fight at all; he knows his physical limits and the very last thing he wants to do is tempt b.rabbit into making a reappearance so soon after he's sworn off using it. besides, it's just as important to get on the pirate ship right now, and then he can worry about how to pull his weight with making sure the fight goes as they've been asked to make it.

in all the chaos, a small boy darting around doesn't draw much attention, but much isn't the same as any - he almost bodily collides with a pirate when one steps deliberately in his path with nothing good in mind. )

[--and he has a friend join him. except instead of helping him grab Oz, he grabs the other's arm instead, causing a beat of confusion before his fist launches into the other's face.

this new guy puts himself in-between Oz and the broken nose as he curses and shouts outrage; said new guy appears to be shouting in confusion, too.

it all makes sense, really.]

( he's still regaining his footing when the pirate is joined by yet another man, tensed up and alarmed and utterly unprepared for the appearance of a savior. or maybe it's mainly the fact that it's clearly one of the pirate's fellows defensively standing between them, and the surprise makes oz pause where he probably ought to take advantage of it and keep running.
