Summary: It's just some fancy masquerade dance with spiked punch.

Welcome to Versailles.

The decorations are arranged, the food is prepared and laid out, the music has been rehearsed, and... most people have their costumes and masks ready. At precisely 1600, the Transporter machine activates, and a full room of people and all of their decorations, food, musical instruments, and costumes are sent back to 1772. The Palace of Versailles is in the height of its splendor, the weather is perfect and cloudless, and the gardens are in full bloom for the spring.

➣ Explore the Palace

Holy shit look at this, you have the chance to get your grubby little fingers all over history before it even becomes properly history. Do you know how many famous butts sat in all these plush velvet chairs? Or are going to sit in these plush velvet chairs? And they were all probably just talking the hell out of French, too. Wow. Go invade some bedrooms, poke your head into the kitchens (but no more than that, or territorial cooking elves might take offense), just. Touch everything. Everything. Just know that where ever you are, there's no escaping that beautiful music your fellow Transports are inflicting on you, that shit's just echoing all over the place tonight.

➣ Admire the Gardens

Jeez look at this, these people just had way too much money. But you get to benefit from it! You can basically just get yourself lost for hours here, so try not to starve or anything. Meet all the statues, go streaking through the fountains (please don't, no one wants to see that), get lost and desperately burst through cute little trees in your increasingly frantic attempts to find the exit. There's all sorts of fun you can have!

Just don't wander too close to the edge of the grounds, or you'll encounter (run into?) the invisible forcefield set up to keep wandering guests from utterly ruining history. That's probably a good way to get yourself a bloody nose.

➣ Enjoy the Banquet

There's tables and tables of this finger-licking good finery here, and it's all for you. And can you believe how fancy it is? Oh my god, those sausages have adorable little spears through them. And those spoons gently cradling their cheesy goodness? Yeah. They're made of crackers. And don't even get me started on these desserts. This is amazing. You've never eaten this good. And naturally, each drink (some of which are spiked, you're welcome) has adorable little frozen flowers in the ice cubes. Who even comes up with this stuff? Elves, that's who.

[This is exactly the type of event Jesse feels completely out of place at. Even at his wealthiest, he never stepped into a party like this. Well, of course, given the lack of French palaces in New Mexico. But aside from that, the whole black-tie thing never suited him. Thank God for his lady friends and their ability to dress him up properly, or else he might have shown up in his usual t-shirt and jeans... or something even sillier.

But he's here, drifting uncomfortably from room to room while not really knowing how he's supposed to behave at a thing like this. Better to explore, swig every drink he can get his hands on, and pace around outside with a cigarette.]

[Haymitch looks much more comfortable than Jesse does, if only because he's used to these kind of parties. He smirks, strolling over to the other man with a raised brow. He'd wandered out into one of the side-halls to catch his breath and maybe stop himself from vomiting when he'd spotted Jesse.]

You look a little out of your element, kid.

[It's weird to see Haymitch looking so fancy. Jesse does a double-take, and then he feels instantly more comfortable, because it's Haymitch.]

I've never seen anything like this. This whole... thing.

[That vague description is accompanied by a wave of his hand to indicate their opulent surroundings.]

[hungover]

[Haymitch chuckles, raising his glass.]

This is exactly what I used to do for weeks on end at least once a year.

[During the Games, things were -- a party for the Capitol, at least -- and during the time before, they tried to make it a spectacle for the Tributes since most of them would be dead soon enough.]

I have to say, it's almost as unnecessarily extravagant as the Capitol's parties.

Jesus, that sounds... I mean, I like parties, but this don't even feel like a party. Feels like I'm in a museum or something. Like I keep expecting to get tossed outta here any second for being somewhere I ain't supposed to be.

[ Her own dress doesn't really lend itself to running or anything, but she does wave and hurry on over when she sees him. ]

[He hadn't gotten a chance to see her outfit yet, since he was dressed and out of the apartment so quickly. Now he has a chance to admire, and -]

Oh my god, you look like a princess.

[ She feels like one for once, but she still beams with pleasure, asking somewhat shyly - ]

Really.

[Jesse walks a half-circle around her just to get a good look at the dress, nodding in approval all the while.]

Yep. You're definitely the prettiest princess here.

[Rin is a rover too. She's less interested in the party, to be honest, and more in the sumptuous surroundings - the idea that anybody would actually live like this is so bizarre in a sense. Life could be pretty mean back home, and in every world she's been to since. The palace is a bubble.

She's headed to the gardens when she catches a brief glimpse of Jesse, and raises a hand to him in greeting without actually stopping.]

[There's a pretty girl waving at him. Jesse smiles in return and raises his hand and -

Oh wait, that's Rin. He's so used to her looking unassuming that he didn't recognize her at all. Now that he gets it, though, he goes scampering after her until he catches up with her pace.]

What's up?

[Yes, yes, she dresses up nicely. The pitter-patter of little Jesse feet takes her by surprise, though it's mild; she does stop there, half turning and tilting her head towards him.]

Not a lot. Are you enjoying yourself?

Can I be honest? I'm bored out of my mind.

[Well, not so much anymore, since he has something nice to look at.]

[Oh, look, it's someone else who looks just out of place as Merlin does. The warlock comes forward with a nervous little smile, his fingers toying with the edge of his mask.]

Er-- hi!

[hostage]

Hey, yo, what's up?

[Jesse recognizes this guy from earlier and remembers he's not an asshole, so the greeting is warm.]

Merlin, right?

[He nods.]

Did I know you from-- er-- before?

We talked on the internet thing. Whatever they call it. I'm Jesse.

[Claire had caught the sight of Jesse before when he was wandering around like he had absolutely no idea where he should be. But there'd been a room full of people between them and he'd been on his way out, so she didn't exactly have a chance to say hey.

Now, though, she catches him when he's standing still. She's been conning the hell out of some poor people with drinking games and competitions. Gathering up her winnings in a rushed effort to make sure he doesn't slip away again, she's still putting on her best totally and completely shitfaced act. Her hair's a little disheveled from the night but she's still overall looking exactly as she did when she arrived. One hand pulling up the front of her dress and she's drunkingly waving goodbye to those half-passed out or fully passed out at the table she's leaving.]

Jesse. Jesse, hey. [Yep as long as she's still in sight of the people she'd just fooled she still needs to act drunk. Claire stumbles and puts on a show of almost tripping, reaching out to grab him in order to stay standing.]

[At this point, Jesse's at the peak of his high and he already looks like he's been rolling in some dirt outside. It's a relief, actually, that Claire's so drunk he doesn't have to explain himself. He laughs when she comes barreling into him, catching her around the waist so she doesn't fall over.]

Oh my god, you are so wasted.

[breakablegirl]

[Cue too-loud giggle. She's too into the act to notice anything off with him yet.]

Nuh uh. I'm ahhhmazing at drinking.

[She hangs onto him.] Hey. Hey. We should go outside.

[hostage]

Yes! That sounds like a fantastic plan.

[Granted, pretty much everything sounds fantastic to him right now. He keeps his arm around Claire's waist, leading her out one of the glass doors toward the garden. Tweaking isn't like being drunk at all. He's very sure-footed and he feels stronger than usual. Whatever weight Claire's leaning onto him, it doesn't slow him down at all.]

[ Somewhere in one of the rooms, he'll find Max also drifting around, looking a little bit more enthusiastic about this whole thing than him, though there's still a certain wary edge to her movements. She glances over at him, considers for a moment. It's better in general to keep up appearances, and in the setting of Exsilium appearances means remaining friendly. ]

You look like you're not sure what you're doing here.

[hostage]

[Jesse turns to look at her, his face breaking into a sheepish little grin. He shoves his hands in the pockets of his coat, sauntering a few steps closer to her.]

Ah, yeah. You caught me. I ain't used to the whole fancy party scene.

[motherofnemesis]

[ She grins back a little sympathetically and shrugs. ]

I haven't really done it that much myself. But it's kind of fun actually.

Yeah, totally. It's, uh, educational. At least.
