[Her head pops right up, her mouth pops open. She recognizes that voice in turn and actually it's quite a welcome one.]

Claire? [And he knows her! She hastily throws her sewing aside and hops up.]

Oh my God!

[ He jumps down from the horse and comes over to lean on the banister of the porch. His nature might have been too optimistic to let being forgotten by Jake and Maya put him off calling out to Rin, but it's still a huge relief to be recognized.

He's not relieved enough to forget to correct her - ] It's Felix now! [ - but it's said happily instead of the usual snappy remark, and in his eagerness he moves on without remembering to explain. ] You're looking swell, a real sight!

[She leans up on the railing too, staring wide-eyed. Drinking him in a bit, really. This makes two people who've recognized her...]

Wow... Claire, it's good to see you. I can't believe it, I've been here for ages. [She shakes her head.] Sorry. Felix. What? Is Chane here?

[ A broad smile fades a little wistfully at the question. ] No - she's not. [ He pinches his lip between his teeth for a second. He's had enough time alone under the stars in the desert to think over why that might be, and he's got a theory - but it's a little too much to explain to Rin just yet.

He blinks off that train of thought and grins ruefully at Rin. ] She missed you like hell when you were gone, y'know.

Oh, my God. If I could have changed anything... [She shakes her head. The horrendous truth of living life between worlds, there's never a chance to say goodbye to anyone or for anyone to say goodbye. Not that she's seen.]

I've missed her too. I would love to see her again. I don't think this is even so bad here... [She looks up, ruefully, into Claire's eyes.] Did you just get here?

[ He meets her gaze solemnly, resolutely. Being separated like this is hard, but Claire can't believe they'll never see her again, and what he can't believe can't be. If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it's that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, uh... well, there it is. Life finds a way.

He inclines his head at her question with a thin smile. He doesn't think it's a bed setup either... ] They know how to throw a welcome party, that's for sure.

[Hey, bizarrely pale stranger. She recognizes you too. Rin sticks her needle through the fabric she's laboring over and turns... well, some of... her attention to Kate.]

Hello.

[ Wow, leave her paleness alone!! It's not her fault she doesn't tan. ]

Hey, long time no speak.

You remembered. [That gets a small smile.] It's been a while. How are you?

[gevurah]

Hot. [ And she raises her hand to block out the sun's glare from her face. ] Otherwise I'm alright.

How about you?

I'm doing okay. I found a job. [She lifts the jacket draped across her lap demonstratively in Kate's direction, and then drops it down again.] It's not much but I'm passing time. Besides, this isn't so bad.

I guess you haven't seen a killing mission yet...?

[ A pause. ]

Oh, hello. [The response to the greeting comes a touch belated. Rin thrusts the needle through her fabric and lifts the coat towards Alice a bit.]

It's just a chore. I wanted to earn a little bit while I was here so I could be more comfortable... although I guess it's a moot point...

[bittertears]

There's no harm in wanting to have a little more money to your name. Our lodgings here certainly aren't much to speak of.

Though I'm sad to hear your endeavors haven't yielded much.

Well, it's more like no matter what I make, I can't take it back... you know? This money will be useless there. [She shakes her head.] I just like having a job to do.

[bittertears]

Simple enough to understand. Busying one's self can be beneficial for a number of things, though I simply like to keep my mind from wandering.

Yeah, that's it.

What have you been up to?

Doing what I can to persuade the citizens here to vote for this... Jackson. The sooner we accomplish, the sooner we can all leave.

I've wondered if home was actually even a place that existed.

( She finds herself smiling. It's bittersweet, this kind of thinking. )

Does it matter? Tell me what reality is. Memories, all the rest, they're not immutable. We make of anything what we can, and that's what becomes real for us.

It matters. What if you're just someone plugged into a game that's telling you you led a life you didn't? You could wake up from it and be Sakura with a happy life who just put herself through a tough game for... whatever reason anybody playing has. Who knows?

That's not much of a "just." As long as I am the girl in the game, going through all the rest of this on a joke, then I'm still the person I am here and now. I still experienced those things, no matter what a later point of view tells me about objective reality.

( She's not arguing this is right. Just that it can be true. )

There's an element of the subjective to any view on reality. It's nicer when we share the same subjective view as those around us... but not necessary, unfortunately.

That's right but whether it's true or not is still important. [Just because - it is. That's all.]
