[The owners of this place are happy to serve the dozens of strange new people. Kaworu and Asuka are lead to a small two-person table.

Asuka's objection to his history lesson doesn't seem to phase him.]

Anyway, as I was saying, there wasn't - isn't an option in a landscape like this to sustain oneself by nurturing plants. So, livestock is raised instead. The most powerful families are powerful because they own thousands upon thousands of cattle.

[He's going somewhere with this, even if Asuka doesn't realize or care. When the waitress drops off some menus, Kaworu thanks her politely.]

[ It seems to... suddenly occur to her that she's still a sparrow, and owes this conversation a little more empty headedness than she's been showing. So she flings herself from her perch to resume the quick darting about, twittering jauntily as she goes: ]

[She might say that, but there's a lot she doesn't let on about her relationship with him. Or even that she realizes. She wants his attention, even if she doesn't understand it. She slouches in her chair with a scowl and doesn't even bother to look up at the waitress as she bustles away.]

Yeah? So what? Why do I care about a bunch of stupid cows?

[She glances back at the sky, knowing that will become less true as soon as Utena decides to fight for them. Probably already has. Letting the quiet pause after her simple reply stretch out, Anthy waits to see if Rei will say something else or choose to walk away.]

The point is, Lilim cannot survive without depending on other things. Livestock are raised and cared for just so that they can be killed and consumed later, right?

[He doesn't look at her as he thumbs through the menu for something without any animal parts in it, but his voice is very conversational.]

And the whole time, we're aware that if the animal could speak, it would beg - "please, don't kill me."

Yeah, so? A lot of animals kill so they can survive. I'm not about to become a vegetarian!

[She looks a bit suspicious. Like this is leading somewhere she doesn't want it to go, but has to keep following anyway.]

[ Well, whoever Roscoe Arbuckle is. Ashraf is in good enough a mood not to question that. He looks amused to see the cards, and shakes his head. ]

No, of course, go ahead. [ and with a tiny quirk of a smile: ] I might add that my spell of Gloria enhances luck.

"I should hope not! Better no one get trampled at all." He wanted them asleep? What for? For a moment, he had to wonder if he intended to cause a stampede or heavens above, try to make off with one. He hoped not. Frodo quickly joined him, glad that Axel set an easy pace despite those long legs. Oh yes, Frodo smelled trouble all right.

"Then of course, since you know that they must be sleeping, either laying down or standing up, it is, in fact, hardly anything to make a night trip out for to find out which," And here, Frodo did not do much to hide that he was feeling around, hoping to get an idea what Axel was up to. He didn't think that this was what he was going to do, but neither was he doing anymore than dropping hints. Worse, it was more than enough to rile up a good amount of curiosity on his part.

Soon, they drew to the very edge of town. "We do have cows back home, though hobbits of my family had little to do with them or their care."

[ Ashraf spots the movement quickly enough and cocks his head toward it, to put the brim of the hat in the way of the sun. Not someone he recognizes, but that doesn't mean he doesn't offer a friendly smile. ]

Hello, and well met. [ a quick pause, and he has to ask: ] Are you... lost?

Of course. And of course you're not. You're a part of the food chain, too. [The agreement is sincere.] But the Lilim are special. You're blessed with knowledge, and this knowledge puts a heavy burden on your heart. You're aware of the animal's feelings, but recognizing it is too painful. Their pain is necessary to in order to survive.

[After another second he sets the menu down and looks back to her.]

So when you have no choice but to inflict pain on them in order to cope, it's easier to pretend their pain doesn't matter at all, right?

[Asuka settles her hands against the edge of the table wit ha glare, clearly getting ready to shove her chair back and leave.]

[ wow, Sollux, talk about awkward mood-killers. He makes a face under the mask. ]

Please, you hardly deserve anything like that. [ a beat. ] If you had a room offered, would you take it?

"From anyone decent, or at least, with a decent upbringing, but this seems no more decent than the Wild back home."

The desert stretched as far as he could see in every direction, with only the road leading out each way. It might as well be the Wild itself, and not its Edge.

Frodo held out his hand, and taking Junior's hand, gave it a firm shake. "All right, Junior it is then. My name is Frodo; pleased to meet you. I've had few near run-ins, but nothing so bad as those." And here he waved to one of the carriages before it rounded a corner.

[And there was the sparrowness again, curious indeed. He has his suspicions as to the little bird. Especially the lines that the questions had been drawn, curious as to where it would lead however.

He gives an amused snort at her comment and rose an eyeridge.]

I doubt one such as yourself would believe it even if you saw it.

[He commented, curious as to how the Sparrow would respond.]

Every few decades, we come back to Ithaka to hunt water-wyrms, train recruits, refit and rest. I enjoy... [ He leans in slightly. ]

Well, its something of a secret, and strictly forbidden, but my friend Petrok finally convinced me. [ He smiles. ] I dive the trench. It is a deep trench near the chapterhouse, and is several leagues deeper than the rest of the ocean floor. We leave relics of our victories there. I left the teeth of a great Ork Warboss that was instrumental in a recent chapter victory there. It was... a moment of joy. The sort I rarely have.

Five minutes out in this heat and Frodo felt like he had been out in the sun for a good five hours already! The hobbit followed some of the locals example, and ducked under one of the wood awnings. There, that was better already. The heat still pressed in, still felt like something very solid and heavy and dry, but bearable now.

And it appeared he had company, for one of the Transports was approaching with a small, friendly enough smile. Frodo nodded back.

"I don't think we have; my name is Frodo." The offer was very generous, especially to a stranger. "That's very kind of you. do you know anything about this place? Or this time?"

I'm afraid you might be mistaking me for anyone else. I have never set foot in the village of Ozette. [ He then looks a little confused ] and I've never heard of a place called Death City.

[ maybe not from the same world after all? ]

[ That was a bit weird. From what he could tell, every world has some form of a blood drinker in their legends. ]

She was an interesting one from what he could see, centaurs were not unfamiliar to him although she was a slight bit different from those he knew.]
