[She wasn't going to dispute that at all, but she'd found that humans were far worse than the Runes.]

The human race or the runes?

[Yeah, if she'd said it there'd be no argument from him. His lip quirks.]

Both.

I won't deny that. We are all tools regardless of our position and power, so are most runes are tools we use. [Raising her hand, she showed the waterdrop mark on the back of her hand. Dropping it down a moment later, her gaze flicked up to regard him again.] But not those twenty-seven. They are... their power-- no... do you have the game of chess in your realm?

[His eyes watch her hand, taking in that marking before his gaze is back on her face.] We do.

Then understand this: all life, whether it's human, kobold, elvish, winger, or any of the other races in my realm, are the pieces on the chess board of my world. The players moving the pieces are those twenty-seven runes. One side wishes for chaos, the other battles for order. Everything on the planet is there for them to use, and we allow it whether we fool ourselves into thinking it's our decision or not.

Quite a few races... [A soft mutter to himself, but he lifts his chin in acknowledgment.] I understand. It's different.

It's merely the tip of the iceberg. [A pleasant smile curves on her lips before she's half turning herself away so she can look at their broken targets once again.] If our enemies were to gain possession of one of the Runes for this world, then I would start to feel concerned for our situation.

Assuming it has a rune. [Adjusts his hat and goes to retrieve his box of ammo and tuck it away into a pocket after rehooking his water skin to his belt.]

That would be entirely up to the rune. They pick their own bearers.

[She remained where she was even if her mind wondered to the potential damage even one True Rune could create in this world, or those that possess them. No, that wasn't correct, for there was one here who had something akin to the True Runes here, but would that even be enough?]

They pick by manipulating events around them?

[He makes a gesture for her to walk with him back to town. It's hot and he'd like more shade than the hat provided.]

[While she didn't follow right away, Elza did eventually begin walking back with him at her own pace.]

Mmm something like that. The latest war had the city-states and my birth kingdom at war with each other when the Rune of Beginning intervened. Although given that the Highland Kingdom had the Beast Rune, it was of no surprise.

[His pace eventually matched hers because he found the details interesting. He may not like the heat, but he wasn't in a rush to get back either.]

It's a surprise to me~

[Elza didn't miss the way that his pace changed to match her own.]

Probably a lot would be.

[A noise of agreement.] So how do you use the energy in the runes?

How indeed.

[Raising her hand up towards the sky, a light charm sounded in the air as the water drop symbol on her hand appeared above her head. Within seconds, the blistering heat around them seemed to fade away as a soft rain began falling down in the area around them. There were no clouds there, but the rain was cool and refreshing, and any signs of fatigue or injury either of them sustained was soothed and simply faded away.]

How the energy is used depends on the rune itself, slinger. We simply call to the rune, and the rune answers.

[He's looking around at the rain, breathes in the cooler air.] Amazing.

[She pretended not to notice as it quietly rained around them. It didn't last for long, only long enough to heal the injuries that weren't there, before it disappeared with a last few splatters down on top of them.]

It can be useful.

Master of the understatement. [His eyes are back on her after the spectacle is over.] What's the rune you have called?

It's called the Flowing Rune. [Raising her tattooed hand up, she brought the other up to rub at the mark on the back of her hand while she watched it.] It's a child rune of the True Water Rune, and it's magic is based on healing many ailments... it can even bring the dead back to life if done soon enough after the death.

[He watched her as she rubbed the mark, and he pursed his lips for a brief second before he lifted a hand and asked:] Can I see?

You're a curious one. [Elza's attention shifted over to the hand Blaine held up. The question was straight forward, and while he wouldn't be able to feel the rune in her hand or remove it, physical touch was something that she rarely allowed. He was no threat, however, and after dropping her unmarked hand, she placed her other one within his for him to look at.]

[Her statement just got an affirming smile as he waited. She placed her hand in his and he lifted it a little so he could see better. He didn't expect to see much, but he took in the details before letting her hand slip free of his. He avoided lingering too long.] Does each one have a different mark?

[Her hand followed his when he raised it. There wasn't much that he could see beyond the tattoo itself, and when Blaine gave the indication that she could have her hand back, Elza withdrew it.]

They do. Each one represents the aspect of what True Rune they take after.

I see. [He scratched lightly at his jaw as they began to move forward again. There's a pleased smile on his face.] You've given me a lot to think about.

I'm sure that I have. [The amused tone she used made it difficult to judge just how Elza felt about the whole thing. The small secretive smile on her lips remained, but she did nothing more to break the silence while they began heading back again.]
