[Well, that does make sense and it shuts him up, but he's still got a half-angry half-mortified look on his face. Maybe a little deer-in-headlights thrown in for good measure.]

[And try as he might to ignore things like that, laughter can still cut him to the quick.]

Yeah, 'cause you were flipping out about it. Seriously, it's no big deal. I mean, I could even hook you up with a girl tonight if you wanted to get it over with.

[He almost starts to relax, but then Jesse starts talking about a girl and his brain just freezes in a slow growing horror. Then the rest of him catches up and he steps back, hands up.]

Thirteen. Um, or fourteen. What's middle school? Maybe it was fourteen.

[There is a long silence, and Kanji is obviously counting something from the way his lips move.]

Yeah. Sixteen now, 'cause it's been a year away from home in November, an' I turned fifteen a little while before I got snagged away from home in the first place. So weird, 'cause my birthday is in a couple days too.
