He's been mending little rips and tears all along pretty much on autopilot, but when he gets to what needs patches he needs to pay more attention. So Kanji's head ducks and for a few moments at least he's utterly focused on his work.

In the meanwhile, Ico played with the doll. He held its arms and made it walk. When Kanji focused on the patches, Ico leaned over to watch. He thought that if he watched then he could learn how to fix it himself should he need to later.

When Kanji picked up on Ico watching he started to go a little more slowly, talking about what he was doing while he did it. The explanation probably would be confusing without a live demonstration, but with both, the process was clearly shown and explained.
