[ And she expects you to listen to her, despite like - all evidence pointing directly to the contrary as to the likelihood of it. She just does. ] I'm not that young. [ Quietly, a little absently, and a moment later the man's face goes blank for a moment and then he frowns at them and turns around back to his group. She hadn't been particularly gentle about it, but she'd been rushed. It wouldn't harm him. ] How much water have you been drinking? [ Quietly to Tony as she starts walking away with him. ]

[ Well, he will, just because he wants to watch this play out now because he knew it was weird before but okay yeah see that, that was weird. He glances back down at her as they start walking away, mind spinning to work this out. ] More than he has, apparently. What the hell just happened? I was the catalyst and I still can't tell what end reaction I provoked.

[ She doesn't look back at him, straight ahead and her face as neutral as she can get it. Stop looking at her, stop questioning it, please just let her get away with it. She wouldn't normally be this open when using her empathy in public, and she's still not entirely sure why she was willing to take the risk now, and she would really appreciate it if he stopped looking at her now. ] He lost interest. There's plenty of other things going on in this town. [ A little curt. ]

That doesn't stop him trying, obviously, just that he doubts she'll actually say anything. No, if that, she'll wait until they get back to Exsilium, where all the war and spying is happening. Then it'll be safe. ] Uh huh. There's so many other things going on in this town with with the extra couple hundred people all of a sudden.

That is a really awful definition of safe, and yet it's true. Exsilium is a more known quantity, and therefore it's safer than here. ] Plenty for them to care about more than us. You should drink something. The heat sucks.

He's also not even bothering to pretend to be convinced, just so she can be sure to expect him asking her shit about it later, but for right now, whatever. ] Is that where we're going? To get a drink? I've been drinking, just so you know. The barkeep already calls me a 'regular', as of yesterday.

Yeah, she can tell that he's not actually convinced so much as temporarily dropping it, and that's a little bit frustrating, but it'll work for now and give her time to figure out a more convincing explanation. ] Not alcohol, it dehydrates you. No wonder the sun's been hitting you hard, you need just plain water.

She rolls her eyes and looks up at him. ] I mentioned the 'not caring' part, right? [ Which is - well, it's total bullshit. If she didn't care, she wouldn't have crossed the street, she definitely wouldn't have risked using empathy, and she wouldn't be dragging him to the hotel she's in so that she could hydrate him and send him on his way. ] I'm not your real mom or your pretend mom.

What, you don't ride horses? [ A little sarcastically, because god knows she doesn't know how to. She flicks her eyes to him, shrugs a little. The innuendo wasn't missed, but she figures ignoring it is the best way to - she's not entirely sure what end goal she's going for, but probably the one where she doesn't have to consider any of the considerations that come up with innuendo. ] Unless you happen to have water wherever you're staying. Worried for my reputation?

I'm more into the 'save a horse' mentality than anything else. [ And hey, if she wants to ignore it - he shrugs. ] I doubt we'll be here long enough for your reputation to come into too much disrepair.

Wouldn't you then have to become a cowboy to get anything out of that? [ yeah let's be honest here max is her own most effective personal cockblock a lot of the time. she's got issues. ] Got somewhere to be?

I have a hat. [ That's about all the cowboy anyone's likely to get out of him, anyway. ] I meant we're only supposed to be here for like, a week, apparently, but if you're that worried about having a strange man in your room...

It's a great hat, but that doesn't make you a cowboy. [ And a little roll of her eyes, but she's sort of smiling at the edges of her mouth. ] It was a joke. Sometimes I make jokes.

[ As pleased as he is to see the smile, that gets her a look anyway. ] Wow, I'm just, like really, because everything I've said up until this point has been one hundred percent sincere.

Hasn't it been? I could have sworn you were one of those truth telling types. [ Unlocking the door to her room and walking in ahead of him. ] Come to think of it, when was the last time you ate?

[ Wait - ] what? I don't know. Before we got here? There was some kind of roll in the bar I didn't totally trust but it wasn't any worse than the whisky here. Why do you care?

You don't eat. [ Look, she's just - noticed, she works in your lab a lot, she's observant. It's not that she cares so much as she's just trying to keep you from falling over and dying. Right? Right. ] I'm just making sure you don't go getting into more trouble.
